PerthNow reported on 15 May 2025 that DPIRD had confirmed more than a dozen further African black sugar ant sightings across Perth’s south since the species was detected in Bibra Lake in March 2025. That is a dated report, not a current infestation count: the available sources do not establish how many cases are active in October 2026 or whether eradication is complete.
If you suspect you have seen these ants, report them to DPIRD and do not move potentially infested items. Colour and size can raise suspicion, but they cannot confirm the species.
What was reported about sightings near Bibra Lake?
PerthNow’s 15 May 2025 report, citing DPIRD, said there had been “more than a dozen further sightings” across Perth’s south since the first Bibra Lake detection in March 2025. The report said detected areas were treated with registered insecticide and would continue to be monitored. The figure describes sightings confirmed by that report’s date; it should not be read as the number of active infestations now. PerthNow’s 15 May 2025 report
DPIRD’s 2 May 2025 alert said all known infestations were under eradication. The department’s 2024–25 annual report later said the Bibra Lake and surrounding-area campaign continued. Those dated statements do not confirm the current status or that eradication has been completed. DPIRD’s 2 May 2025 alert · DPIRD Annual Report 2024–25

How can you recognise an African black sugar ant?
DPIRD describes the ant as shiny dark brown to black and 2–3 mm long. Its thick blackish bristles are usually visible only with a hand lens or microscope. The department’s 2025 alert also advises watching for high numbers of ants that look alike. These features can help you decide whether to report a suspicion, but appearance alone is not a reliable species confirmation. DPIRD’s species guidance · DPIRD’s 2025 alert
A hand lens may help you inspect a very small ant, but it is not a substitute for expert identification. If you are unsure, send a report to DPIRD and ask for advice.

- Kills the Colony: You will receive 16 sets of ant bait stations, which are sufficient and reusable to effectively control common house ants in your home, such as: Acrobat ant, Crazy ant, Sugar ant, Ghost ant, Argentine ant, Little black ants, Pavement, Odorous house, etc. Note: Liquid ant bait is not included
- Four Entrances Design: The four entrance design of the ant bait control can accelerate the end of ant invasion faster. Compared with single entrance models, worker ants can reach the liquid ant baits faster, thereby speeding up the distribution process of ant poison throughout the ant colony
- Sturdy Plastic Shell: Our termite bait stations are made of a clear plastic shell, which is compatible with any type of liquid ant bait. The hard plastic shell is stronger and more reliable than paper and cardboard alternatives and can be reusable
- Efficient and Neat: Whether indoors or outdoors, just set up the ant bait traps, add liquid ant bait (not included), and then watch how it attracts ants, and you can easily eliminate the entire ant colony
- Indoor and Outdoor Use: Set ant killer indoor around areas where ants are active, such as skirting boards, near walls, corners, kitchen counters, sinks and refrigerators. In addition, it provides long lasting ant killing power for homes, apartments, schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and other areas

Why is DPIRD concerned about this ant?
DPIRD says the species can be aggressive toward native ants and may outcompete and displace them. It can form connected nests, sometimes described as “super colonies,” and live in urban, industrial, and natural environments. The department also warns that it can infest electrical boxes and damage plastic components and wiring. DPIRD’s species guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should residents avoid doing?
Do not try to confirm the species from colour or size alone, and do not move potentially infested goods or materials. The official guidance supports reporting suspected ants to DPIRD; it does not provide consumer instructions for pesticide application or DIY eradication. Leave identification and response advice to the department.
