The National Park Service estimates it was 16–20 feet long—about half the length of Tyrannosaurus rex. “Tiny T. rex” is a useful size comparison, not its formal identity: Nanuqsaurus was a close tyrannosaur relative, not a miniature T. rex.
What was Alaska’s polar bear lizard?
Nanuqsaurus hoglundi was a tyrannosaur from the Late Cretaceous, the period spanning roughly 100–66 million years ago. Its known fossil is a partial skull recovered from the Prince Creek Formation on Alaska’s North Slope. The National Park Service says the skull was collected on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
The name means “Hoglund’s polar bear lizard” in the National Park Service’s rendering. “Nanuq” is the Iñupiaq word for polar bear; “hoglundi” honors philanthropist Forrest Hoglund. The genus name is a nod to the Arctic setting, not evidence that the dinosaur resembled or behaved like a modern polar bear.
How big was Nanuqsaurus?
The National Park Service’s 2021 educational account estimates Nanuqsaurus at 16–20 feet long, about half the length of T. rex. The Bureau of Land Management also gives an approximate length of 20 feet. These are estimates, not a tape-measure reading from a complete skeleton: the known specimen is a partial skull.
#1 Best Overall
- Arctic Dinosaur Design: Sculpted feathers and a distinctive cold-climate appearance give Nanuqsaurus a recognizable prehistoric identity for dinosaur adventures, classroom activities, Arctic scenes, and display.
- Dimensions: Measures just over 9.5 inches long x 4 inches tall. Its extended body and upright profile work naturally in dinosaur play, classroom projects, prehistoric dioramas, tabletop displays, and collections.
- Feathered Dinosaur Sculpt: Dull blue-gray skin, sculpted feather coverage, a brown stripe down the back, and striped brown-and-white feather details create a distinctive visual treatment for play, projects, and display.
- Play Learn Display: Add Nanuqsaurus to Cretaceous adventures, Arctic prehistoric scenes, classroom activities, school projects, habitat dioramas, tabletop arrangements, gifts, or broader dinosaur collections.
- Ages 3 Plus: Designed for ages 3+. This standalone dinosaur figure fits hands-on imaginative play, prehistoric classroom work, Arctic-themed projects, dioramas, gifting, tabletop display, and collecting.
An earlier estimate differs. In its 2014 announcement, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science reported that paleontologists Anthony R. Fiorillo and Ronald Tykoski considered the animal fully grown and estimated it at approximately 25 feet and 1,000 pounds. That is the discovery team’s initial estimate as reported by the museum; the later National Park Service account uses the shorter 16–20-foot range. The reviewed official summaries do not provide a comparable, consistent weight estimate for T. rex, so a weight ratio cannot be established from them.
Was Nanuqsaurus a tiny T. rex?
Not literally. Nanuqsaurus was a tyrannosaur and a close cousin of T. rex, but it was a distinct dinosaur. Calling it “tiny T. rex” conveys the size contrast; it should not be mistaken for a juvenile T. rex or a smaller version of the same species.

The BLM page calls it the “smallest carnivorous tyrannosaurid yet discovered.” That is the agency’s characterization on its page, rather than a ranking established by the National Park Service summary, which describes it more cautiously as relatively small.
What do the fossils tell us about its life in the Arctic?
What is known
The partial skull is the basis for identifying Nanuqsaurus. The BLM dates the relevant Prince Creek Formation rocks to about 69.1 million years ago. This establishes that the dinosaur lived in what is now northern Alaska during the Late Cretaceous; “Arctic” describes that ancient North Slope setting, not a claim that the region had exactly the same climate as present-day Alaska.

Alaska also preserves broader evidence of dinosaur life. The National Park Service reports thousands of tracks in Denali’s Cantwell Formation, including many attributed to hadrosaurs. Those tracks help illustrate the wider Alaskan dinosaur world, but they are not tracks made by the Nanuqsaurus specimen or evidence from the Prince Creek skull itself.
What remains uncertain
The North Slope experienced pronounced seasonal changes in daylight. The BLM describes a long dark season and likely seasonal food scarcity, while noting that questions about how polar dinosaurs survived and whether they migrated remain open. The evidence does not establish that food shortages caused Nanuqsaurus to be small.

Feathers are also a possibility, not a confirmed feature of this animal. The National Park Service says it has been hypothesized that Nanuqsaurus may have had feathers that helped regulate body temperature, drawing on feather evidence from other tyrannosaurs. No feathers are directly preserved in the known Nanuqsaurus fossil described by the agency.

The Perot Museum’s 2014 announcement says paleontologist Anthony R. Fiorillo discovered the fossils while excavating Alaska’s North Slope in 2006. Fiorillo described why the find mattered to the ancient environment: “The ‘pygmy tyrannosaur’ alone is really cool because it tells us something about what the environment was like in the ancient Arctic,”

Can you collect dinosaur fossils in Alaska?
Rules depend on land ownership and the type of fossil. Alaska’s Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys says most landowners prohibit collecting vertebrate fossils. If you encounter a protected find, leave it in place, document it, and report it to the landowner; do not assume a fossil can be removed simply because it is exposed.
Where can you learn more?
The National Park Service points readers to a prehistoric coloring book that features Nanuqsaurus. It is an educational option for children interested in dinosaurs, rather than evidence that a particular toy, model, or fossil replica is available.
