Arrange a trusted caregiver if your pet needs company or scheduled care. Crowds, loud sound, unfamiliar surroundings, heat and dropped food can pose risks, though individual animals respond differently.
Why a crowded festival may not suit your pet
Music, dense crowds and unfamiliar people can frighten or stress some animals. Veterinary guidance from Brazil’s Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of São Paulo (CRMV-SP) identifies loud sound, crowds and high temperatures at Carnival events as potential sources of stress and health or behavior problems. LSU’s veterinary teaching hospital likewise notes that unfamiliar places, crowds and fireworks can frighten pets. These are risk factors, not a prediction that every animal will react badly.
Outdoor events can also bring heat and hot pavement, while dropped food may be unsafe. In a crowd, it can be harder to keep an animal close or prevent an escape. Colorado State’s veterinary teaching hospital discusses summer hazards for dogs, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises leaving pets at home when possible in warm weather. What to do with your pet while you attend
Leave them in a familiar, quiet room
Choose a low-traffic interior room or retreat your pet already uses. Set out fresh water, familiar bedding and toys, and make sure the space is secure. A familiar setting can be more reassuring than placing an animal in a new room or crate for the first time. AVMA recommends leaving pets home when possible in warm weather; LSU also advises leaving pets at home when attending an event away from home.

Arrange a trusted caregiver when needed
If your pet needs company, medication, meals, toileting or other scheduled care, ask a trusted person to stay with them or check in. Match the plan to the expected time away and your animal’s needs. For substantial medical or anxiety concerns, ask your veterinarian what level of supervision is appropriate.
Offer familiar enrichment if it is suitable
An enrichment activity, such as a food-stuffable dog enrichment toy or a chew, may occupy a pet indoors during loud festivities. ASPCA suggests options such as a Kong or chew, but these are optional activities—not anxiety treatments or substitutes for supervision. How to make home calmer and safer
- Reduce noise and stimulation: For a noise-sensitive pet, prepare a comfortable interior room away from windows. Soft music may help some animals. ASPCA recommends consulting a veterinarian if anxiety is persistent or severe.
- Keep the space comfortable: Provide fresh water and a cool indoor area, especially in warm weather. Ask your veterinarian how to recognize heat stress and whether your pet’s health changes the plan.
- Prevent escapes: Take care when people enter and leave so your pet cannot slip through an open door or gate.
- Use a crate only if it is already familiar: LSU mentions a crate or safe interior room for dogs anxious about fireworks. Do not newly confine an unfamiliar or distressed animal.
- Never use a parked car as a waiting place: AVMA warns that cars can overheat quickly, even when the weather does not seem severe, in shade or with windows cracked. AVMA warm-weather guidance.
Choose an arrangement that fits this pet and event
Before you go, weigh the practical details rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all rule:
- Is the space familiar and comfortable for your pet?
- Will they need human supervision, medication, feeding or a toileting break while you are away?
- How long will you be gone?
- Can you provide water and a comfortable temperature indoors?
- Will festival noise reach the pet, and do they have a quieter retreat?
- Can doors, gates and other escape routes be managed safely?
- Do your pet’s health or anxiety history call for a veterinarian’s advice?
If the event is at your home or in a private outdoor area, consider those conditions separately. A festival recommendation does not automatically apply to every gathering. For significant anxiety or medical needs, consult your pet’s veterinarian about an individual plan.
