The American Alsatian is a large U.S.-developed companion dog with a wolf-like appearance, a calm temperament as a breeding goal, and a thick seasonal coat. Despite its name, it is not a type of German Shepherd Dog, not a wolfdog, and not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club or Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

This is also a breed-development project rather than an old, firmly established breed. Its size, coat, temperament, pedigree terminology, and breeding practices can vary, so prospective owners need to assess the individual breeder and dog—not just the label.

What is an American Alsatian?

The American Alsatian is a modern American breeding program intended to produce a very large, wolf-like domestic companion. The stated goal is a dog with the visual impression of a dire wolf but with a manageable, people-oriented household temperament.

The name can cause confusion. “Alsatian” was historically used in Britain and elsewhere as an alternative name for the German Shepherd Dog, but the American Alsatian is a separate development program. It is not an American variety of the German Shepherd.

Nor is it a wolf hybrid. The documented foundation is domestic dog breeding. The dire-wolf reference describes the desired appearance, not wolf ancestry.

The program began with Alaskan Malamute × German Shepherd Dog breeding. Later histories describe the use of Mastiff, Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound, Labrador Retriever, Akita, and other lines at different stages. Because the project continues to describe outcrossing and ongoing refinement, buyers should ask exactly which dogs and generations appear in a puppy’s pedigree.

History and the current naming split

The first documented litter was born in Oxnard, California, on February 4, 1988. The dogs were initially called North American Shepalutes, then Alsatian Shepalutes in 2004. The name changed to American Alsatian on February 21, 2010.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original breeding program later split after a family and program separation. Current materials distinguish two strains:

  • American Alsatian: bred by Lois Schwarz and Amey Gage.
  • American Dirus: bred by Jennifer and Jay Stoeckl.

According to the current project history, Jennifer stopped using Lois Schwarz’s American Alsatian trademark on July 5, 2022. The two strains are now treated as distinct within the broader DireWolf Dog project. Older articles may use the names interchangeably, so a buyer should confirm which strain a breeder produces, what name appears in the contract, and what outcrosses are included in the pedigree.

“Dire Wolf Project,” “DireWolf Dog,” and “strongbred” are program or breeder terminology. They do not mean that the dog is recognized by the AKC, FCI, or another internationally established kennel-club authority.

American Alsatian appearance

The published American Alsatian standard calls for a large, heavy-boned, broad-bodied dog that is longer than tall. Desired features include a broad head, relatively short and thick neck, deep chest, substantial bone, and a straight tail reaching no farther than the hocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard describes almond-shaped eyes ranging from light yellow to light brown, erect triangular ears with slightly rounded tips, black lips and nose, and a scissors bite. These are breeding and conformation preferences, not guarantees for every dog sold under the name—particularly while the type remains under development.

How big does an American Alsatian get?

Sex Published height range Published minimum weight
Male 26–32 inches at the withers 90 pounds
Female 25–28 inches at the withers 85 pounds

These figures are targets in the published standard, not a verified population average. The use of minimum weights also means that individual dogs may be heavier. Since the project continues to use outcrosses and describes its desired conformation as unfinished, advertised adult size should be treated as an estimate rather than a promise.

A dog of this size requires more than floor space. Plan for a giant crate, a vehicle that can accommodate an adult dog, sturdy walking equipment, larger veterinary bills, and enough room for the dog to turn around safely without knocking into people or furniture.

Coat and shedding

The American Alsatian has a dense double coat. In winter, the coat becomes thicker and moderately coarse, with a heavier ruff around the neck. After much of the undercoat sheds, the summer coat is shorter and thinner.

Seasonal shedding commonly begins around May or June, according to the breed standard. During this period, an owner may remove large amounts of undercoat from the dog and find hair on floors, furniture, clothing, and car upholstery. This is not a reliably low-shedding breed.

Brush at least several times a week year-round. During major coat loss, many owners will need to brush every other day or daily. Use a pin or slicker brush and an appropriate undercoat tool carefully; aggressive stripping can irritate the skin or damage the outer coat. Regular nail care, ear checks, dental care, and cooperative grooming training are especially important in a dog too large to restrain easily.

Colors

Wolf-gray silver/sable is the preferred appearance in the published standard. It also describes gray sable, silver sable, golden sable, tri-sable variations, black-silver sable, silver, solid cream, and other solid colors.

The breeding program favors banded, wolf-like coats and discourages solid colors for appearance reasons. Color preference is not evidence that one color is healthier, more intelligent, or better tempered than another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

American Alsatian temperament

The intended temperament is calm, self-confident, curious, loyal, and companion-focused. The standard calls for a dog that is bold without being hostile, approachable but potentially aloof with strangers, and neither timid nor nervous. It also describes low prey drive and a strong desire to stay close to the owner.

This is not supposed to be a protection or guard dog. Breed information describes the American Alsatian as relatively quiet and not particularly barky, while the standard prefers an infrequent, deep, low-pitched vocalization. Excessive or high-pitched barking is considered a breeding fault in that standard.

Those descriptions are goals, not a guarantee. The breed’s own material acknowledges variation between generations and individuals, including differences in barking, activity, and temperament after outcrossing. Meet the puppy’s parents where possible, ask how they respond to unfamiliar people, and observe adult relatives rather than relying on photos or a breed label.

Strong attachment can be a positive trait in a family companion, but it may create practical difficulties. Some dogs may struggle with long periods alone, a move to a new home, or rehoming. The breeder’s material notes that ownership transfers may take months to a year for some dogs. Discuss alone-time history and rehoming support before committing to a puppy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exercise needs

The American Alsatian is intended to be a companion rather than a high-drive working, herding, or endurance dog. A general breed profile estimates about 60 minutes of daily exercise for an adult. The actual amount should be adjusted for age, body condition, weather, health, and the individual dog’s enthusiasm.

A suitable adult routine might include two moderate walks, supervised sniffing and exploration, short training sessions, and gentle play. Mental activity matters too: food puzzles, scent games, simple obedience, and calm household routines can help prevent boredom without encouraging uncontrolled impact on the joints.

Do not exercise an American Alsatian puppy like an adult athlete. Large and giant-breed puppies may take up to two years to reach adult weight. Forced running, repetitive jumping, long hikes, and slippery flooring can place unnecessary stress on developing bones and joints. Ask your veterinarian to set an exercise progression for the individual puppy.

Training and socialization

A calm dog weighing 90 pounds or more still needs excellent manners. Begin training before the puppy is physically powerful, using reward-based methods and short, repeatable sessions.

  1. Socialize deliberately: Introduce people, calm dogs, household sounds, vehicles, surfaces, grooming tools, and veterinary handling at a pace the puppy can tolerate.
  2. Teach leash skills early: Loose-leash walking is much easier to establish at 25 pounds than at 100 pounds.
  3. Practice recall and emergency handling: Build a reliable response to its name, a recall cue, collar grabs, and moving away from hazards.
  4. Teach visitor manners: Reward four paws on the floor, a settle on a mat, and calm movement through doors.
  5. Condition cooperative care: Gradually teach the dog to accept nail trims, brushing, ear checks, tooth brushing, bathing, and veterinary examinations.
  6. Build independence: Use brief, successful periods alone and increase them gradually rather than suddenly leaving a newly attached puppy for an entire workday.

A large dog that is quiet indoors can still be difficult to control if it jumps on guests, pulls toward dogs, refuses handling, or panics when alone. Training should address those practical failure points, not only sit and stay.

Feeding an American Alsatian

There is no scientifically validated universal feeding amount for this developing type. A fixed recommendation such as three or three-and-a-half cups daily can be misleading because calorie needs depend on age, sex, activity, body condition, growth rate, and the food’s calorie density.

For puppies, choose a complete diet formulated for large- or giant-breed growth. Large-breed puppies have different calorie, calcium, phosphorus, and growth-control needs from small and medium puppies. Measure meals, monitor body condition, and review weight gain with a veterinarian rather than trying to make the puppy grow as quickly as possible.

Do not copy a breeder’s homemade recipe or supplement plan without veterinary review. Some breeder guidance includes oils, bone meal, eggs, kelp, herbs, garlic, and other additions. Such a recipe is not automatically nutritionally complete or appropriate for every growing dog. A veterinary nutritionist can assess a homemade diet if one is genuinely needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For adults, keep the dog lean. Excess weight increases the mechanical load on hips, elbows, and other joints. Ask your veterinarian whether dividing food into multiple meals is appropriate, especially because a large, deep-bodied dog may be vulnerable to gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Health considerations

There is not enough independent epidemiological research to give reliable American Alsatian-specific disease rates. The following concerns are reported or practical considerations, not proof that every dog will develop them.

Hips, elbows, and growing bones

Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are identified concerns in available breed information. Panosteitis—an inflammatory bone condition that can cause shifting lameness during growth—is also reported as a concern. Keeping a puppy at a healthy body condition, avoiding forced exercise, and seeking veterinary advice for recurring or unexplained lameness are sensible precautions.

Epilepsy

Some owners have reported epilepsy. The available sources do not establish its prevalence in the population. Ask a breeder whether seizures have occurred in parents, siblings, offspring, or close relatives, and request a written explanation rather than accepting a general claim that the line is healthy.

Bloat and GDV

As a large, deep-bodied dog, the American Alsatian deserves a discussion about gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV. This life-threatening emergency can involve the stomach filling and twisting and requires immediate veterinary treatment.

Warning signs include:

  • Restlessness or repeated attempts to get comfortable
  • A swollen or tight-looking abdomen
  • Repeated unproductive retching
  • Excessive drooling
  • Weakness, collapse, or breathing difficulty

Do not wait to see whether these signs pass. Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Ask your veterinarian about feeding several smaller meals, slowing rapid eating, avoiding strenuous exercise around meals, and whether preventive gastropexy is appropriate. These measures may reduce risk but cannot guarantee prevention.

Health testing: what a buyer should verify

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) lists American Alsatian as a searchable breed entry. That makes individual records possible to check, but it does not mean the breed has a complete or representative health dataset.

OFA hip and elbow certifications generally require radiographs, with final certification performed at 24 months or older. Preliminary evaluations are not the same as final adult clearances. Search the registered names yourself and check the dates and type of evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before placing a deposit, request:

  1. The registered names of both parents.
  2. Direct links to publicly searchable OFA or equivalent results.
  3. Final hip and elbow results, not merely the phrase “health tested.”
  4. Vaccination, parasite-control, and significant veterinary records.
  5. A written contract covering return, rehoming, and genetic-health responsibilities.
  6. The puppy’s generation, strain, and any outcrosses in the pedigree.
  7. A clear explanation of which health problems have occurred in close relatives.

A breeder who will not provide verifiable parent information is asking you to take a substantial risk, particularly with a giant dog whose orthopedic and medical care can be expensive.

Lifespan

Online breed profiles commonly give a lifespan of 12–14 years, and current breeder material gives an expectation of approximately 13 years. These are estimates, not the result of a published independent longevity study involving a large American Alsatian population.

Claims that American Alsatians routinely live 15–20 years are not supported by the reviewed sources. Twenty years appears as a breeding goal rather than a demonstrated breed average. Treat any lifespan estimate as uncertain and focus instead on responsible breeding, weight control, preventive veterinary care, dental care, and prompt attention to illness.

Registration and kennel-club status

The American Alsatian is not on the AKC’s current recognized-breed list, is not listed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, and does not appear in the FCI’s current breed nomenclature. Terms such as “strongbred” or “DireWolf Dog” do not provide the same status as recognition by an established kennel club.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not by itself determine whether an individual dog will make a good pet. It does mean that buyers should not assume that a registry certificate, program name, or private standard represents the same level of external recognition and oversight as an AKC- or FCI-recognized breed.

Is an American Alsatian a good family dog?

It may suit owners who want a very large indoor companion and are prepared for a calm but powerful dog, heavy seasonal shedding, substantial food and veterinary costs, and careful early training. A stable individual may be affectionate and attentive without being an intense working dog.

It is a poor fit for anyone looking for a dependable guard dog, a low-shedding pet, a dog that can routinely remain alone for long periods, or an AKC- or FCI-registered breed. It is also a poor choice for a household unwilling to verify health records or learn which current strain and pedigree it is buying.

Questions to ask an American Alsatian breeder

  • Are you breeding American Alsatians or American Dirus?
  • What are the registered names and final OFA hip and elbow results for both parents?
  • Which outcrosses appear in this puppy’s pedigree?
  • What adult size have close relatives reached?
  • How do the parents behave with strangers, dogs, grooming, travel, and time alone?
  • Have seizures, orthopedic disease, panosteitis, or serious digestive emergencies occurred in the line?
  • What does the contract say about returning or rehoming the dog?
  • What food, growth-monitoring plan, and exercise restrictions do you recommend for the puppy?
  • Can I speak with owners of adult dogs from previous litters?

FAQ

Is the American Alsatian a wolfdog?

No. Its documented foundation is domestic dog breeding, beginning with Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd Dog lines. The wolf or dire-wolf reference describes the desired appearance, not wolf ancestry.

How large does an American Alsatian become?

The published standard targets males at 26–32 inches and at least 90 pounds, and females at 25–28 inches and at least 85 pounds. These are standard targets rather than a verified population average.

Does the American Alsatian shed?

Yes. It has a dense double coat and a substantial seasonal undercoat shed. Expect regular brushing throughout the year and much more grooming during seasonal coat loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the American Alsatian recognized by the AKC?

No. It is not on the AKC’s current recognized-breed list or in the Foundation Stock Service. It is also absent from the FCI breed nomenclature.

What is the difference between an American Alsatian and an American Dirus?

They are separate current strains within the broader DireWolf Dog project. Lois Schwarz and Amey Gage continue breeding American Alsatians, while Jennifer and Jay Stoeckl breed American Dirus. Older sources may not reflect this split.

Is the American Alsatian a guard dog?

No. The stated purpose is companionship, not guarding or protection work. The intended temperament is calm and approachable, although individual behavior can vary.

How much exercise does an American Alsatian need?

A general breed profile estimates about 60 minutes of daily exercise for an adult. Puppies need age-appropriate activity and should not be pushed into forced running, repetitive jumping, or long endurance exercise while growing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What health tests should an American Alsatian breeder provide?

Ask for the registered names of both parents and verifiable final hip and elbow results, preferably searchable through OFA or an equivalent organization. Also request veterinary records, family health information, and the contract’s return and health provisions.

The Bottom Line

The American Alsatian is best understood as a large, still-developing American companion-dog program—not a German Shepherd variety, wolf hybrid, or AKC-recognized breed. Its appeal is its imposing wolf-like appearance paired with an intended calm, loyal household temperament. Its challenges are equally concrete: giant-dog expenses, heavy shedding, uncertain population-level health data, potential orthopedic and GDV risks, and variation between strains and individuals.

If you are considering one, verify the breeder’s strain, pedigree, adult health records, and contract before paying a deposit. Meet adult relatives when possible, and choose based on documented health and temperament rather than dramatic appearance or unsupported claims.
