Veterinarians sometimes prescribe amoxicillin to cats for certain bacterial infections. It is not a general remedy for a sick cat, and the dose is set by the prescriber for that individual animal. VCA Animal Hospitals describes feline use of amoxicillin as off-label, so the prescribing veterinarian’s judgment matters more than any published reference range. This guide explains what a prescribed course involves, what broad veterinary references say about dosing, which side effects matter, and when to call the clinic.
What amoxicillin is used for in cats
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that acts against certain bacteria. It does not treat every cause of illness, and it has no effect on viruses. A veterinarian decides whether it fits the diagnosis after examining the cat.
Two situations come up most often in veterinary references:
- Urinary tract infections. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists amoxicillin, with or without clavulanic acid, among first-choice antimicrobial options for urinary tract infections in dogs and cats. Urinary symptoms do not always mean bacteria are involved, so the veterinarian needs to confirm an infection before an antibiotic is chosen.
- Secondary bacterial infection in respiratory illness. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s feline respiratory disease guidance says management is largely symptomatic and supportive. Antibiotics are considered in relation to secondary bacterial infection and the organisms involved. They do not treat the viral illness itself.
Dosage reference values: two different medicines
Veterinary references list amoxicillin dosages in a way that is easy to misread. The figures below come from the Merck Veterinary Manual’s penicillin dosing guidance. They are shown so you can recognize them on a label or in a conversation with your veterinarian. They are not a dose for your cat, and they should not be used to calculate or measure a dose at home.

Plain amoxicillin
The Merck Veterinary Manual gives a general range for dogs and cats. The same reference says the dose rate and frequency should be adjusted as clinically indicated, based on factors such as the susceptibility of the organism and the needs of the individual animal. That breadth is deliberate: the range covers many possible situations, and only the prescriber can narrow it for one cat. Route and interval are not interchangeable choices for an owner. Follow the route, schedule, and amount on your cat’s label.
Amoxicillin-clavulanate is a separate product
Merck lists amoxicillin-clavulanate separately for cats. This is the combination product, and it is not simply plain amoxicillin under another name. The two should not be substituted for one another, even when bottles or packaging look similar. Read the active ingredients on the label before giving anything.

Check the label before the first dose
- Active ingredient. Confirm whether the label says amoxicillin alone or amoxicillin-clavulanate. Clavamox is a brand of the combination product.
- Amount, frequency, and duration. Compare the label with the clinic’s written instructions. Give the medicine for the full prescribed time unless the veterinarian directs otherwise.
- Form. Amoxicillin for cats may be a tablet, a capsule, or a liquid suspension. Each is handled differently at home.
- Questions. If any detail on the label differs from what you were told, call the prescribing clinic before the first dose.
Giving the medicine at home
VCA Animal Hospitals describes oral amoxicillin as available in tablet, capsule, or liquid suspension forms. In practice:
- Food. The medicine may be given with or without food. If a dose given on an empty stomach is followed by vomiting, VCA says future doses may be given with food. Check with the clinic before changing timing around meals.
- Liquids. Shake the bottle well, then measure the dose with the oral dosing device the clinic supplied or specified. Do not substitute a kitchen spoon or a syringe from another medicine.
- Full course. Continue for the full prescribed time, even if the cat seems better, unless the veterinarian says otherwise.
- Changes. Do not change the dose, interval, or length of treatment without checking with the prescriber. VCA’s guide says the medicine begins to take effect within about 1–2 hours, but visible improvement may take a few days. That timing is general information and is not a basis for deciding when treatment ends.
If a dose is missed
- Give the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose.
- If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the normal schedule. This is the VCA Animal Hospitals guidance.
- Never give two doses at once to make up for a missed one.
- If you are unsure what “almost time” means for this prescription, ask the clinic rather than guessing.
Side effects: what is common and what is urgent
Common stomach-related effects
VCA lists lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea as common effects. Mild signs like these are a reason to call the clinic for advice, not a reason to stop the course on your own. Describe what you are seeing and let the veterinarian decide whether the plan should change.

VCA says to stop giving the medicine and contact the veterinarian immediately if an allergic reaction develops. Signs include rash, fever, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing. Breathing difficulty and facial swelling are urgent. Do not wait at home for a routine appointment. Contact the clinic’s emergency line or go to an emergency veterinary hospital right away.
Other serious signs
VCA identifies incoordination while walking and prolonged lack of appetite in cats as serious signs that need veterinary attention. A brief dip in appetite falls under the common effects above. Who should not receive amoxicillin, and what to disclose
- Cats with a known allergy to amoxicillin or other penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics should not be given amoxicillin, according to VCA.
- VCA lists bacteriostatic antimicrobials, methotrexate, and probenecid as drugs to use with caution alongside amoxicillin.
- Tell the veterinarian about every medication, vitamin, supplement, and herbal product the cat takes, including products bought without a prescription.
- VCA notes extra caution for pregnant or lactating pets. Discuss this with the veterinarian before treatment starts.
No general statement makes amoxicillin safe for a specific cat. The prescriber weighs the cat’s history and current medicines against the diagnosis.
Doses that may have been doubled or given incorrectly
If a dose may have been doubled, given at the wrong strength, or given at the wrong time, contact the veterinary office immediately and follow its directions for emergency care, as VCA advises. Before calling, have the following ready:

Do not use leftovers or another animal’s medicine
Do not save amoxicillin from an earlier course, use a bottle prescribed for another pet, or substitute a human product. A cat’s diagnosis, weight, and other medicines determine both the drug and the dose. A bottle that looks similar is not a safe replacement for the prescription the clinic wrote.
