Animal “superpowers” are real biological adaptations, not detachable abilities that work in every situation. The strongest evidence in the available sources covers four especially striking cases: bats locating objects with echoes, cephalopods changing camouflage, tardigrades entering a reversible dry state, and salamanders rebuilding lost limbs. Humans can partly imitate some of these feats through learned skills or technology, but we cannot currently match the animals’ sensory systems, cellular control or environmental tolerance. A longer list can be entertaining, yet adding eight poorly verified examples would turn a science explainer into a collection of myths. The guide below explains what each adaptation does, how it works, where it fails and what the nearest human analogue really is.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Closest human analogue | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bat echolocation | Finding objects without relying on ordinary vision | Ultrasonic calls and returning echoes locate surrounding objects | Learned human echolocation used by some blind people | Oct 2026 |
| Coleoid camouflage | Rapid concealment and visual signaling | Octopuses, cuttlefish and squid dynamically alter skin appearance | Adaptive camouflage technology; no human biological equivalent | Oct 2026 |
| Tardigrade anhydrobiosis | Surviving severe drying and other environmental stress | Reversible metabolic halt triggered by desiccation | None; human dormancy is not comparable | Oct 2026 |
| Salamander limb regeneration | Replacing a lost complex body part | Cells change state and rebuild multiple limb tissues | Limited human healing; whole-limb regrowth remains speculative | Oct 2026 |
This is not a ranking: each adaptation solves a different ecological problem, so “most powerful” has no meaningful biological scale.

What counts as an animal superpower?
“Superpower” is a useful metaphor for an adaptation that looks extraordinary from a human point of view. Biology treats it as a structure-function match: a body part, behavior or cellular process evolved because it improved survival or reproduction in a particular environment. The same adaptation carries costs. Echolocation requires producing and interpreting sound; camouflage demands specialized skin and neural control; anhydrobiosis suspends normal activity rather than keeping an animal active; regeneration takes time and energy.
The Oxford Academic teaching activity Biology of Superpowers: A Curriculum Activity for Teaching Adaptation, Trade-offs, and Organismal Diversity uses these traits to teach that an ability only makes sense in context. A feature that is advantageous in one habitat can be useless, expensive or dangerous in another. That is why these examples should be compared by task, mechanism and environmental setting, not by a fictional power scale.

How does bat echolocation work?
Bats produce calls that travel through the air and listen for the echoes returning from objects. Differences in the returning sound provide information about where an object is, allowing a bat to locate obstacles and potential prey in darkness. The Science Teaching explainer describes this as an active sensing system: the animal sends out a signal, receives environmental feedback and turns that feedback into a usable spatial picture.
What the ability is good at
- Navigation: echoes can reveal the position of nearby obstacles when visible light is unavailable.
- Target detection: changes in returning sound can indicate a small moving object such as an insect.
- Continuous updating: the bat can change its calls and interpretation as it moves through space.
Why “bats see with sound” is incomplete
Echo-based information is not ordinary human-style sight. A bat’s auditory system, call production and brain processing evolved together, and the resulting perception has its own limits and resolution. Saying that a bat simply “sees” with sound erases the biological mechanism and suggests a one-for-one replacement for vision that the evidence does not support.

Some people, especially blind experts, learn to use self-generated clicks or other sounds and their echoes to support mobility. Thaler and colleagues’ 2016 review, Echolocation in humans: an overview, discusses research on these practitioners and reports that the skill can provide useful information about surroundings. It is a learned strategy, not a human version of bat sensory biology.
What human echolocation can and cannot do
- It can supplement other mobility information by indicating nearby surfaces or objects.
- Performance depends on practice, the sound source, the environment and the listener’s hearing.
- It does not grant ordinary sight, reproduce a bat’s ultrasonic range or turn an untrained person into a radar-like navigator.
The practical lesson is encouraging but precise: humans can learn to extract spatial information from echoes, while bats possess an integrated anatomical and neurological system specialized for the task. Describing the human skill as an analogue avoids both extremes—calling it impossible or claiming it duplicates bat perception.

How do octopuses, cuttlefish and squid change camouflage?
Coleoid cephalopods—octopuses, cuttlefish and squid—are leading examples of dynamic camouflage. A 2023 Current Biology review, Neural control of cephalopod camouflage, identifies these animals as biological systems that can alter their external appearance rather than relying on a fixed color pattern.
Camouflage is an active control system
The skin contains chromatophores and other optical structures whose activation changes the animal’s visible pattern. Signals from the nervous system coordinate those structures with posture and behavior. The result can help an animal blend into a background, break up its outline or communicate a signal. The exact appearance depends on the species and situation; no source supports the idea that every cephalopod can flawlessly copy any background.

Why this is harder than changing paint
A manufactured camouflage suit can be recolored, but it does not automatically sense the scene, choose a useful pattern, coordinate the whole body or switch between concealment and signaling. Cephalopod camouflage links sensing, decision-making and skin control in one living system. The biological achievement is the integration, not merely the presence of color-changing cells.
Are tardigrades really indestructible?
No. Tardigrades can tolerate conditions that would quickly kill active animals, but “indestructible” is misleading. Kazuharu Arakawa’s 2022 review in the Annual Review of Animal Biosciences describes anhydrobiosis: when drying becomes severe, a tardigrade can enter a reversible state in which metabolism is brought to a near halt.

What anhydrobiosis does
The dormant state helps the animal endure periods of desiccation and is associated with tolerance of other adverse conditions, including extremes of pressure, temperature and ionizing radiation discussed in the review. When suitable water returns, the animal can resume activity. This is survival by pausing normal life processes, not by remaining fully active under every hazard.
The limits that matter
- It is conditional: the response is triggered by drying and depends on the animal’s physiological state.
- It is reversible dormancy: a dormant tardigrade is not behaving like an awake animal that feels no stress.
- It is not universal invulnerability: the evidence does not justify claims that tardigrades survive any temperature, pressure, radiation dose or chemical exposure.
For humans, there is no established equivalent of tardigrade anhydrobiosis. Medical suspended-animation research is a technological and experimental direction, not a human ability that exists today.
Why can salamanders regrow limbs?
Many salamanders can regenerate a lost limb, rebuilding several tissue types instead of merely sealing the wound. The Science Teaching “Animal Superpowers” explainer describes a transition in cell state that enables the reconstruction process. The important point is that regeneration is an organized developmental program, not uncontrolled growth.
What a regenerating limb requires
- Cells near the injury respond to the wound and change their behavior.
- A regenerative structure forms with cells capable of contributing to multiple tissues.
- Bone, muscle, nerves, skin and other components are rebuilt in coordinated positions.
Humans heal cuts and can repair some tissues, but we do not currently regrow an entire arm or leg. Claims that salamander biology proves full human limb regrowth is imminent go beyond the established evidence. Future regenerative medicine may borrow principles from salamanders, yet that remains a research goal rather than a present-day human superpower.

What other animal superpowers are often cited?
Dog smell, ultraviolet or infrared vision, prolonged seal diving and unusual sleep patterns are frequently offered as additional examples. The available material identifies them as promising topics, but it does not provide enough species-specific verification here to state precise mechanisms, measurements or limits responsibly. Infrared sensing in pit vipers is also mentioned in the Royal Society review Bioinspiration: something for everyone (2015), but a full entry would require checking the relevant species and original studies.
That evidence boundary matters. A credible list should identify the animal, the biological structure, the task it performs, the environmental context and the trade-offs. Without those details, a catchy label can become a misleading claim—for example, turning “detects some wavelengths outside human vision” into “sees everything,” or turning a specialized dive response into limitless underwater endurance.
Could humans copy these abilities with technology?
Yes, in limited ways. The Royal Society’s 2015 biomimicry review points to echolocation, heat detection and complex camouflage as challenging functions engineers try to model. A sensor, camera, sonar system or adaptive material can reproduce part of an animal’s function without reproducing the animal itself.
Biomimicry is not biological possession
A device inspired by bat echolocation does not give its wearer bat hearing. A thermal detector does not create pit-viper sensory organs. A responsive camouflage surface may change appearance, but it lacks the full living control system unless engineers add sensors, software, actuators and power. Keeping that distinction clear prevents technology demonstrations from being reported as if humans had acquired a new sense.

How to judge a future “superpower” claim
- Name the task: Is the claim about locating objects, hiding, surviving dehydration or rebuilding tissue?
- Identify the mechanism: Look for the organ, cells, behavior or control process that produces the effect.
- Check the conditions: Ask which species, life stage, habitat and environmental range are involved.
- Separate ability from analogue: Mark whether the human counterpart is a learned skill, a medical phenomenon, a device or speculation.
- Look for the trade-off: Every adaptation has energy, speed, accuracy, developmental or ecological costs.
Why are there not twelve verified entries here?
The headline’s number is larger than the set of examples that can be supported confidently by the available sources. Expanding the list with unverified figures or species claims would make the article sound more complete while making it less accurate. Four well-supported adaptations, plus a transparent account of the candidates that need further checking, give readers a sounder understanding of what animal “superpowers” actually mean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a person learn echolocation without being blind?
The reviewed human-echolocation literature focuses particularly on blind experts, but it describes echolocation as a learned strategy rather than an ability restricted by a special human organ. Any training claim should be evaluated on the person’s hearing, instruction and environment; it should not be presented as bat-equivalent perception.
Recommended Free Tools
Do tardigrades survive outer space indefinitely?
The evidence summarized here supports tolerance of several severe conditions through specialized dormancy, not indefinite survival in every space environment. Duration, radiation exposure and whether the animal is hydrated or dormant all matter, so a blanket “space-proof” claim is unjustified.
Can camouflage-changing materials make a person invisible?
Adaptive materials can imitate part of the visual effect, but concealment depends on lighting, viewpoint, background and control speed. Cephalopod camouflage is a living sensing-and-response system, so a material that changes color is not automatically true invisibility.
How close are scientists to growing a human arm?
Humans do not currently regenerate whole limbs. Salamander regeneration offers biological questions for regenerative medicine, but translating cell-state control, patterning and nerve integration to people remains speculative rather than an established clinical capability.
