Ants can bite dogs, sting them, or do both. Fire ants bite to hold on, then sting repeatedly. A dog may develop a few itchy red bumps after disturbing an ant nest, or more widespread swelling and illness after numerous stings.
Most uncomplicated reactions remain limited to the skin and improve within about 24 hours. Facial or mouth swelling, breathing changes, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or multiple stings need prompt veterinary advice or emergency care.
What ant bites and stings look like on dogs
Ant reactions are often easiest to spot on areas with little fur, including the nose, muzzle, ears, feet, and between the toes. Check carefully beneath a thick coat because small lesions can be hidden.
- Small red, raised, itchy bumps
- Localized swelling, pain, or tenderness
- Hives or raised areas under the coat
- Yellow or white pustules, especially after fire-ant stings
- Redness or sores from licking and scratching
- Limping, pawing at the face, whining, chewing, or restlessness
Dogs more commonly develop red, itchy papules after fire-ant exposure than the obvious pustules often described in people. A pustule is not proof that fire ants were responsible; insect stings, skin infection, allergies, irritation, and self-trauma can look similar. Merck Veterinary Manual

Bite or sting: what happened?
The word “bite” is commonly used for any ant injury, but ants do not all affect dogs in the same way. Some species bite, some sting, and some do both. Fire ants bite to anchor themselves and then sting repeatedly. One fire ant can therefore cause several stings before it is removed. UC IPM
You may never see the ants, particularly if they are buried in dense fur. The exposure history and the pattern of skin lesions help a veterinarian distinguish an ant reaction from other causes.
When an ant reaction is an emergency
Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately if your dog has any of the following:
- Swelling of the face, muzzle, mouth, throat, or neck
- Hives over much of the body
- Wheezing, labored breathing, or an unusual change in panting
- Excessive drooling or trouble swallowing
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or obvious abdominal discomfort
- Pale or bluish gums
- Weakness, stumbling, confusion, collapse, or seizures
Swelling around the mouth or throat can interfere with swallowing or breathing. A suspected sting inside the mouth should be treated as urgent, even if your dog initially seems comfortable. VCA Animal Hospitals

Serious allergic reactions can begin within minutes, but signs may also be delayed for hours. Keep watching your dog after a significant exposure. Gastrointestinal signs, including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal distress, can be prominent in canine anaphylaxis. Severe reactions to insect envenomation in general are possible, although anaphylaxis secondary to fire-ant stings has not been reported in companion animals in the Merck Veterinary Manual. That does not make breathing problems, collapse, or other systemic signs safe to monitor at home.
What to do if your dog has been attacked by ants
- Move your dog away from the nest or colony. Continuing exposure can quickly increase the number of stings.
- Remove remaining ants safely. Wear gloves and brush or pick ants from the coat. Do not use bare hands, and do not squeeze ants against your own skin.
- Inspect the whole dog. Look at the face, ears, eyes, paws, and spaces between the toes. Part the fur in several places.
- Cool a swollen area. Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for about 10 minutes. Never place ice directly on the skin.
- Stop licking and scratching. A cone may be needed, particularly if your dog is damaging the skin or chewing at the paws.
- Call your veterinarian when indicated. Ask for advice after multiple stings, any facial or mouth involvement, worsening swelling, persistent pain, or unusual behavior.
Do not give Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or another human antihistamine unless your veterinarian has approved it for your dog and specified the product and dose. Combination cold and allergy products may contain additional ingredients that are dangerous to dogs, and the appropriate medication depends on the individual dog and the reaction. When does a dog need veterinary treatment?
A dog with a small number of localized bumps and normal behavior may only need observation and protection from further irritation. Most uncomplicated ant envenomations settle without specific treatment, often within roughly a day. Merck Veterinary Manual
Veterinary care is appropriate when the exposure was extensive, the lesions are worsening, the dog cannot stop scratching, or the reaction affects the face, mouth, eyes, or feet. A veterinarian may use:

| Problem | Possible veterinary treatment |
|---|---|
| Itching, hives, or allergic skin reaction | Veterinarian-selected antihistamines or corticosteroids when clinically appropriate |
| Painful or extensive lesions | Pain control, wound care, and monitoring |
| Breathing difficulty or anaphylaxis | Epinephrine, oxygen, airway support, and close observation |
| Weakness, collapse, or shock | Intravenous fluids and other emergency stabilization |
| Severe or widespread exposure | Monitoring and tests for complications or organ injury |
The treatment decision depends on the number of stings, the location of the lesions, your dog’s age and health, and whether signs are remaining local or becoming systemic. Merck Veterinary Manual
How veterinarians diagnose ant reactions
There is usually no single test that confirms an ant bite or sting. The veterinarian will ask where and when the exposure occurred, examine the distribution of bumps or swelling, and assess your dog’s breathing, circulation, and general condition.
If the cause is uncertain or the skin does not improve, other possibilities may need consideration:
- Bee, wasp, or another insect sting
- Contact irritation from plants, chemicals, or outdoor surfaces
- Fleas or other parasites
- Bacterial or fungal skin infection
- Environmental or food-related allergy
- Self-trauma caused by licking and chewing
Take a photograph of the lesions when you first notice them. If you safely identify the ants, a photograph of the insects or nest may also help, but do not delay treatment to collect a sample. PetMD

How long do ant bites take to heal?
Small, uncomplicated reactions often improve within about 24 hours. Itching or a small crust may last longer, especially if your dog keeps licking the area. The skin should gradually become less red and swollen rather than expand or become increasingly painful. Merck Veterinary Manual
Arrange a veterinary examination if swelling continues to increase, pus or a bad smell develops, your dog becomes lethargic, the area remains painful, or there is no clear improvement. These changes may indicate infection, a more substantial reaction, or a diagnosis other than an ant sting.
Preventing further ant stings
- Keep your dog away from visible ant mounds and areas where ants are actively moving.
- Inspect outdoor resting areas before allowing your dog to lie down.
- Keep food bowls, treats, and spilled food away from ant colonies.
- Ask a pest-control professional or veterinarian about pet-safe nest-control options.
- Do not apply household ant poisons, essential oils, or insecticides to your dog.
If your dog has previously had a serious reaction to an insect sting, ask your veterinarian for a written emergency plan before the next outdoor outing.
The Bottom Line
Move your dog away from the ants, remove any remaining insects with gloves, inspect the coat, and use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for about 10 minutes on localized swelling. Monitor closely because serious signs can be delayed. Breathing changes, facial or mouth swelling, vomiting, collapse, or multiple stings warrant immediate veterinary help.

FAQ
Can ants hurt dogs?
Yes. Ants can bite, sting, or do both. Fire ants can bite to hold on and sting repeatedly, causing itchy bumps, swelling, pain, and occasionally a serious systemic reaction.
Can I put Benadryl on or give Benadryl to my dog for ant bites?
Do not give diphenhydramine or another antihistamine without veterinary instructions. The correct product and dose depend on the dog, and human combination products may contain unsafe ingredients.
Should I take my dog to the vet for an ant bite?
A few small bumps with normal behavior may improve with observation, a cool cloth, and prevention of licking. Call a veterinarian after multiple stings, facial or mouth involvement, worsening signs, persistent pain, or any unusual behavior.
What are the emergency signs after an ant sting?
Facial or throat swelling, hives, breathing difficulty, excessive drooling, trouble swallowing, vomiting, diarrhea, pale or blue gums, weakness, collapse, or seizures require immediate emergency veterinary care.
