Yes. Anthurium is toxic to cats. Its insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause painful irritation in the mouth and throat when a cat chews the plant. Remove the plant from reach and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for guidance. Trouble swallowing or breathing is an emergency.

What anthurium can do to a cat

Anthurium—also called flamingo flower, flamingo lily, laceleaf, or tailflower—contains needle-like, insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, also known as raphides. Chewing releases the crystals, which can penetrate and irritate tissues in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. The ASPCA lists Anthurium scherzeranum as toxic to cats and includes Anthurium among plants containing insoluble calcium oxalates (ASPCA plant database; ASPCA houseplant guidance, October 13, 2025).

Signs to watch for

  • Burning, pain, or irritation of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat
  • Excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, or head shaking
  • Retching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or reduced appetite
  • Difficulty swallowing

Signs can vary with the amount chewed, the cat’s size, and individual sensitivity; the cited poison-control guidance does not establish a safe dose threshold for anthurium (Pet Poison Helpline).

What to do if your cat chewed an anthurium

  1. Stop further exposure. Move the plant out of reach and prevent your cat from chewing more.
  2. Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service. Tell them the plant name if known, when the chewing may have happened, what symptoms you see, and how much may be missing. Follow their advice for your cat. The ASPCA plant listing and Pet Poison Helpline both recommend professional guidance after suspected exposure.
  3. Go directly to a veterinary hospital for breathing or swallowing difficulty. ASPCA’s October 13, 2025 guidance says: “If your pet is having trouble swallowing or difficulty breathing, remain calm and bring your pet directly to a veterinary hospital.” (ASPCA)
  4. Do not let home measures delay care. ASPCA notes that a small amount of dairy, such as milk, yogurt, or vanilla ice cream, may lessen mouth irritation after exposure to insoluble calcium oxalate plants. Contact a professional first for advice specific to your cat, and never use this as a substitute for veterinary care.

Why anthurium is not the same as a true lily

The word “lily” in anthurium’s common names can cause confusion. Anthurium’s insoluble crystals primarily irritate tissues where they make contact. Veterinary guidance distinguishes these from soluble oxalates, which can affect calcium levels and injure the kidneys. True lilies are a separate, high-risk category for cats; do not apply anthurium’s expected effects to an unidentified plant or a mixed bouquet. If you are unsure what your cat chewed, contact a veterinarian or poison-control service promptly (VCA Animal Hospitals).

Keep anthurium away from cats

Because chewing it can cause painful irritation, do not treat anthurium as a cat-safe houseplant. Keep it somewhere your cat cannot access, or choose plants identified as non-toxic to cats in a reliable reference such as the ASPCA’s plant database. A plant’s common name alone is not enough to identify it safely.
