Why antifreeze is dangerous to cats
Many radiator antifreeze products contain ethylene glycol. Cats absorb it rapidly, and the body converts it into compounds that can cause metabolic acidosis, early depression of the central nervous system, and acute kidney failure. Other possible sources include some heat-exchange fluids, brake and transmission fluids, and household or recreational products. Ethylene glycol in topical products may also be absorbed through a cat’s skin. Merck Veterinary Manual’s professional reference and its cat-owner guidance describe these risks.

Propylene-glycol antifreeze is less toxic than ethylene glycol, but it should not be treated as safe around cats. Merck notes that it can still cause a similar toxic syndrome, although the outlook is usually better. Store all antifreeze products where pets cannot reach them.

Early signs may begin about 30 minutes to 12 hours after ingestion and can resemble alcohol intoxication. A cat may vomit, drink or urinate more, seem depressed or stuporous, move poorly, or place its paws abnormally. In cats, severe kidney failure can develop within 12–24 hours. Later signs may include lethargy, poor appetite, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, drooling, rapid breathing, seizures, or coma. Signs vary with the amount and timing of exposure.

These symptoms overlap with other illnesses, and their absence does not rule out poisoning. A cat that appears normal after a possible exposure still needs immediate veterinary assessment.
How much antifreeze is toxic to a cat?
Merck’s 2024 pet-owner page gives a lethal-dose estimate of 1–2 teaspoons in cats. Its 2024 professional reference reports a minimum lethal dose of 1.4 mL/kg of undiluted ethylene glycol. These are estimates reported in different contexts—not safe-exposure limits. Product concentration and the amount a cat contacted may be unknown, so do not use either figure to decide whether care is necessary. Any suspected exposure warrants an immediate call to a veterinarian.

What should I do if my cat licked or got antifreeze on its fur?
- Call an emergency veterinarian now. Explain that antifreeze exposure is possible, what product may be involved, and when it happened. Leave for the veterinary hospital promptly; do not wait for symptoms. ASPCA advises taking a pet suspected of ingesting antifreeze to a veterinary hospital immediately in its antifreeze safety guidance.
- Bring the product information. Take the container or label, or a clear photo of the ingredients. This can help the veterinary team identify what the cat encountered.
- Do not attempt home treatment. Do not induce vomiting or give remedies unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically instructs you. Cornell’s feline poisoning guidance advises against inducing vomiting without veterinary direction.
- For help identifying the risk, contact a veterinary poison-control service while arranging care. ASPCA lists its Animal Poison Control Center as available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; check its service page for current contact details and access information. Service access or fees may apply. A poison-control call should not delay transport to a veterinarian.
At the clinic, veterinary professionals may use blood and urine tests and early antidotal and supportive treatment. Treatment is aimed at limiting absorption, increasing elimination of unmetabolized ethylene glycol, preventing its metabolism, and correcting its effects. These are clinical measures, not home-care instructions; once severe kidney injury has developed, the prognosis is poor.

How to prevent antifreeze exposure
- Keep antifreeze securely stored and dispose of old product properly.
- Clean leaks promptly and keep Olga away from the area during cleanup.
- After cleaning a leak, Merck advises covering the area with cat litter, sawdust, or another absorbent material to discourage pets from licking any small residue. Absorbent material does not neutralize antifreeze and is not a substitute for thorough cleanup.
