Anubis, a five-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, was shot during a home burglary in St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 5, 2015. His owner, Chris Watson, found him bleeding after returning home that morning. The available reporting does not establish that Anubis confronted the burglar or drove the intruder away; it does document the dog’s injury and emergency veterinary treatment.
What happened to Anubis?
ABC News reported that Watson left for work at about 3:45 a.m. on October 5, 2015. When he returned around 11 a.m., he found the house ransacked. Anubis did not come when called, so Watson contacted police. Too shaken to enter the home, he waited while a police K9 unit went inside. Anubis then appeared from around a corner and approached him; Watson noticed that the dog was bleeding. Police saw a prominent bullet hole in Anubis’s scalp. ABC News reported the incident on October 6, 2015.

What were Anubis’s injuries?
The bullet passed through Anubis’s skin, grazed his skull, and lodged in his neck. On October 6, veterinarian Dr. Andrea Smith removed it at a BluePearl emergency clinic in Clearwater. A BluePearl spokeswoman told ABC News that the bullet nearly missed major arteries and blood vessels. The report does not provide further medical details or document Anubis’s long-term recovery.

Did Anubis fight off the burglar?
The reporting establishes that Anubis was shot during the burglary, but it does not describe anyone witnessing him confront the intruder. The headline’s suggestion that he defended his person should not be read as a confirmed account of a fight or of the burglar being driven off. What is documented is that he was found injured after the break-in and received emergency treatment.

How Watson described his dog
Despite the trauma of the previous day, Watson told ABC News that “Anubis has been in unusually high spirits.” He described the dog as exceptionally friendly and said, “Anubis is my son.” ABC’s account also reported that Anubis weighed 150 pounds. These were Watson’s remarks and the dog’s reported age and weight at the time of the October 2015 story, not current information about his condition.
What happened to the burglary investigation?
At the time ABC News published its report, the St. Petersburg Police Department hoped the recovered bullet would provide a clue to catching the burglar, who remained at large. The accounts reviewed do not establish the suspect’s identity, whether an arrest followed, or the eventual outcome of the investigation.
