Some bonsai plants are toxic to cats, but “bonsai” describes how a plant is cultivated—not a species. The risk depends on the plant’s exact identity. Sago palms, jade plants, and weeping figs are among the plants the ASPCA lists as toxic to cats. If your cat may have eaten any plant material, contact a veterinarian promptly; possible sago palm ingestion warrants immediate veterinary advice.
Why the word “bonsai” does not tell you whether a plant is toxic
Bonsai is a cultivation style, so plants trained as bonsai can belong to different species. Pruning or keeping a plant small does not make it safer for a cat. A generic “bonsai” label is not enough to assess risk: look for the scientific name on the plant label or ask the seller to identify it.

The ASPCA’s plant database covers frequently encountered plants, not every plant, and it cautions that individual plants may differ from listing photos. It also notes that eating any plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. Use its toxic and non-toxic plant database as a reference, not a guarantee that an unlisted plant is safe.

Which bonsai species are listed as toxic to cats?
The ASPCA lists several plants that may be grown as bonsai as toxic to cats. These listings identify potential hazards; they do not predict what will happen to a particular cat after an exposure.

| Plant identification | ASPCA listing and reported concerns |
|---|---|
| Sago palm and cycads (Cycas revoluta; Zamia species) | Listed as toxic to cats. All parts of sago palm are toxic, and the seeds have the highest toxin concentration. ASPCA lists vomiting, dark or bloody stool, jaundice, increased thirst, liver failure, and death among possible signs or outcomes. |
| Jade (Crassula argentea) | Listed as toxic to cats. Reported signs include vomiting, depression, and incoordination. The ASPCA says most jade exposures cause mild gastrointestinal irritation, while more severe signs are rare. |
| Fig or weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) | Listed as toxic to cats; reported effects include gastrointestinal and dermal irritation. |
| Azalea or rhododendron (Rhododendron spp.) | Included on the ASPCA cat plant list as toxic. That listing does not establish how often these plants are sold or cultivated as bonsai. |
See the ASPCA’s listings for sago palm, jade, and fig, as well as its plant list for cats. A symptom or severity statement for one species should not be generalized to every plant in the same genus.
What to do if your cat chews or eats a bonsai
- Contact a veterinarian promptly. For possible sago palm ingestion, the ASPCA advises immediate veterinary contact. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for case-specific guidance.
- Identify the plant if you can. Keep its label, or take a clear photo and note the scientific name. Do not delay the call while trying to identify it.
- Call ASPCA Animal Poison Control if needed. The number listed by the ASPCA is (888) 426-4435. The FDA also directs pet owners to veterinary poison-control resources for potentially dangerous items, including sago palm and rhododendron or azalea.
ASPCA’s 2015 warning reported that 50–75% of sago palm ingestion cases resulted in fatalities. That historical figure was not cat-specific and should not be treated as a current estimate or a prediction for an individual pet. The important action after a suspected exposure is to seek veterinary advice immediately.

Can you tell whether a bonsai is cat-safe from its appearance?
No. A miniature size, decorative pot, or bonsai label does not establish the species or its toxicity. Confirm the plant’s exact name and check a reliable plant-toxicity reference. Because no plant list is exhaustive, ask a veterinarian when the identity or risk remains uncertain. Do not assume a plant is safe simply because it is absent from a list.
