Cattle can and do kill people, particularly in farm settings and when people encounter cows protecting calves. But the evidence does not establish a universal claim that cows are deadlier than sharks: the available figures cover different places, years and populations, and some death records do not identify the animal involved.
Are cows really more dangerous than sharks?
There is no sound, like-for-like global statistic showing that cows kill more people than sharks. A meaningful comparison would need to match geography and time period, count the same kinds of victims, account for how often people encounter each animal, and reliably identify the species involved. The available cattle figures do establish a serious risk, but they do not supply those matched comparisons.
For England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics notes there is no specific ICD-10 code for farm-animal attacks. Some deaths may be coded W55, “bitten or struck by other mammals,” which does not identify the mammal. That limits species-specific comparisons based on those records. See the ONS explanation of deaths involving animals in England and Wales.
How many people are killed by cattle?
Great Britain: agricultural deaths and livestock fatalities
The Health and Safety Executive reported 27 agriculture-related deaths in Great Britain in 2022/23 and said “being injured by an animal (cattle) caused most deaths.” This is an annual agricultural-death figure, not a count of all cattle deaths across the population. The HSE’s agriculture fatal-injury reporting gives the sector context.

Domestic cattle caused 97% of them, and 74.3% of the victims were farmers. Those findings describe the cases in that study and period; they are not a worldwide annual rate.
United States: worker deaths and fatal incidents
A U.S. occupational study published in 2017 identified 222 animal-related worker fatalities during 2011–2014; cattle and other bovines caused 36%. A separate CDC review examined 21 cattle-related deaths across four U.S. states from 2003 to 2008. Ten involved an individual bull, six an individual cow and five multiple cattle. All but one resulted from blunt-force trauma to the chest or head, according to the CDC report.

How cattle can cause fatal injuries
Cattle may charge, butt, trample, pin or crush a person against a wall, gate or other fixed object. Their size and force make close contact dangerous even without a bite. In the CDC’s review, nearly every death involved blunt-force trauma to the chest or head. Bulls, cows protecting calves, confined handling areas and situations where a person is alone are especially concerning contexts.
Why walkers should take cattle seriously
In the Great Britain study covering 2010–2023, every public victim was killed in a field, and 84.2% had a dog present. Public victims were 250 times more likely than farmer victims to have a dog present. This is an association in a small set of fatal cases, not proof that dogs cause cattle attacks. HSE incident reporting describes cows with young calves as protective and unpredictable.

On a public route, keep your dog under control around livestock, follow signed paths, give cattle space and do not approach calves or get between a cow and her calf. Before entering a field, notice gates and possible exits. If cattle are blocking the route or the situation feels unsafe, choose another way rather than pushing through.
How to reduce risk around cattle
For farm workers
- Use safe livestock-handling facilities, including suitable gates and panels, and follow trained handling procedures.
- Keep an escape route available when working near cattle, and avoid working alone when the task or animals make the risk high.
- Take particular care around bulls, cows with calves and confined spaces where an animal could pin someone.
These precautions reflect CDC guidance on safe cattle handling and facilities. HSE enforcement cases also show that keeping cows with calves on a public access route can create a serious foreseeable risk.
For walkers and other visitors
- Stay on signed public routes and give cattle a wide berth.
- Never approach or touch calves; do not place yourself between a calf and an adult animal.
- Keep dogs under control around livestock, and use an alternative route if cattle are in the way or you cannot see a safe exit.
What to do if cattle approach or chase you
Do not approach, corner or try to drive cattle away. Keep a clear route to an exit and move toward a gate or other safe boundary if you can do so without passing close to the animals. If a dog is with you and cattle begin to chase, letting the dog go may help separate the dog from you; prioritize getting yourself to safety and do not try to hold onto a dog that is pulling you toward cattle. This is practical risk-reduction advice, not a guarantee of safety in every encounter.
