Are Hippos Dangerous? Understanding Their Behavior and Risks

Hippos can be dangerous, but risk depends on the encounter. Here’s how territorial and defensive behavior, shared habitat and commonly repeated attack statistics should be understood.

Yes. Hippos can be dangerous to people, particularly when people use the waterways or shorelines hippos depend on. Their size and powerful jaws make a close encounter hazardous, and territorial defense, protection of young, and competition between males can all play a part. That does not mean every hippo is constantly aggressive or looking for a confrontation.

Why can hippos be dangerous?

Common hippos spend much of the day resting in or near water and commonly come ashore at night to forage, according to South African National Parks (SANParks). Those habits bring people and hippos into shared spaces: rivers, lakes, shorelines, boats and nearby farmland. The 2022 review of human conflict with common hippos in Africa describes shared access to resources and crop-raiding as sources of conflict; crop damage can harm local livelihoods and may be followed by retaliatory killing of hippos.

Risk is tied to the situation, not simply to a hippo’s presence. Territorial defense, protecting young and male dominance competition are contexts associated with defensive or aggressive behavior, as IFAW describes. A hippo reacting defensively is not evidence of malicious intent: like other wildlife, it may respond to a perceived threat.

What hippo behavior can signal conflict?

SANParks describes hippos as highly social and nocturnal, with groups of 20–100. It lists yawning, scooping water, head-shaking, roaring and grunting in water as dominance displays. On land, it describes tail-paddling, urinating while facing an aggressor and open-mouth displays.

These are descriptions of behavior, not a reliable checklist for predicting an attack. Do not rely on seeing—or not seeing—one particular display to decide that an animal is safe to approach.

Are hippos Africa’s most dangerous animal?

There is no single established comparison that settles this superlative. “Dangerous” can refer to how severe an encounter may be, how often people encounter an animal, the chance of injury in a particular encounter, or the number of deaths across a population over a year. Those are different measures, and evidence for one does not establish the others.

Rudi Hulshof, a professional safari guide, discussed encounter exposure and shared river use in an October 2022 essay about comparisons with other wildlife. That is a named professional viewpoint, not a systematic dataset. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable, comparable annual hippo-fatality total for Africa.

What do the numbers about hippo attacks actually show?

Be cautious with dramatic figures repeated online. IFAW’s current page repeats an 86.7% encounter-fatality figure, but the material available here does not establish a generalizable denominator or population-level risk. It should not be read as the chance that an ordinary person will encounter a hippo or die in any encounter.

Similarly, the “approximately 500 human deaths” figure appears in Hulshof’s October 2022 essay as a number he had previously believed and then questioned—not as a verified annual toll. The 2022 conflict review says data on hippo injuries arising from conflict are not widely available.

A 2020 peer-reviewed clinical report documents 11 hippo bite cases from Burundi. It is a small case series about injuries, not a measure of how likely an encounter is to turn fatal. For context, WWF’s current hippo page gives a common population estimate of 115,000–130,000; that is a population estimate, not a statistic about attacks on people.

What should you do if you see a hippo?

The sources reviewed establish that encounters can be hazardous, especially where people and hippos share waterways and habitat, but they do not provide an experimentally validated universal deterrent or a detailed authoritative emergency protocol. Keep the advice conservative:

  • Observe from a safe distance; do not approach or try to get closer for a better view.
  • Follow local park rules and the instructions of your guide or other responsible local authorities.
  • Do not obstruct wildlife or treat a behavior display as proof that an animal is harmless.

No particular tactic can be presented as a guarantee of safety. The 2022 conflict review also notes that experimental research on deterrent responses is sparse.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

The evidence supports a clear practical conclusion: hippos can pose a serious hazard in close encounters, and overlap around water, shorelines and feeding areas matters. But limited injury and conflict data do not support a universal individual-risk estimate, a dependable encounter-fatality percentage or a settled continent-wide annual death toll. Those limits matter when comparing hippos with other animals or interpreting striking numbers.
