Yes. Betta splendens are naturally solitary, territorial fish. An adult betta—especially a male—does not need a fish companion to be content, and adding another betta can cause severe injury or death. Being alone is appropriate only when the aquarium itself provides adequate space, cover, gentle movement, stable water quality and appropriate stimulation.
Why bettas are usually housed alone
The Siamese fighting fish is described in peer-reviewed research as a “solitary, highly territorial fish” with stereotyped aggression (Iwata et al., 2023). Adult fish, particularly males, are therefore generally isolated in captivity. A second betta is not a social necessity; it is a potential territorial intruder.
The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital gives the clearest practical warning: “Betta fish are naturally territorial and should not be housed with any other betta fish because they will fight and injure each other, often resulting in death” (Krista Keller, DVM, 2019). U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance likewise says male bettas cannot share an aquarium because they will fight.
Do bettas get lonely?
There is no good evidence that bettas experience human-like loneliness or require companionship to prevent it. Keller writes that bettas are “unlikely to get lonely in their tank”; the more relevant risk in a small, bare container is boredom and restricted behavior.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Welfare studies measure observable outcomes—swimming, foraging, approaches and aggressive displays—rather than a human emotion called loneliness. The practical question is whether your fish can move normally, explore, rest, hide and maintain good health without being exposed to a dangerous tank mate.
Alone does not mean confined to a bowl
A solitary betta still needs a real aquarium. Keller specifically advises that bettas “should not live in bowls” and ideally recommends a 5-gallon glass or plastic tank (about 19 liters) or larger. That is a veterinary recommendation, not a universal scientific minimum for every design or husbandry system, but it is a useful baseline for household care.

In an Animal Welfare experiment, Ronald G. Oldfield and Emily K. Murphy (2024) compared containers of 0.5, 10, 38 and 208 liters. Fish in 0.5-liter bowls spent less time swimming than fish in larger aquaria. Enriched containers increased swimming, while larger group aquaria reduced approaches and aggressive displays and increased foraging. Swimming rates were similar in the 10-, 38- and 208-liter aquaria, leading the authors to report that 10 liters was sufficient for full swimming behavior under their study conditions.
Those results do not turn 10 liters into a universal rule, nor do they replace the veterinary 5-gallon recommendation. They do show why “alone” should describe the social arrangement, not an undersized container.

What a healthy solitary setup includes
- Space: Use a filtered aquarium of at least 5 gallons, with more volume making temperature and water-quality changes easier to manage.
- Heat: Provide a reliable, appropriately sized heater and monitor temperature with a thermometer; bettas are tropical fish and should not be kept at room-temperature extremes.
- Gentle filtration: Choose a filter with flow the fish can tolerate. A betta should not have to fight a strong current to reach the surface or rest.
- Cover and structure: Add live or artificial plants and smooth hides that create shaded resting places without sharp edges or tight openings.
- Secure access: Use a lid because bettas can jump, while leaving appropriate air space above the water for surface breathing.
- Stable water: Cycle the aquarium, test water regularly and perform partial water changes according to the measured conditions rather than waiting for visible problems.
- Daily observation and enrichment: Offer varied, species-appropriate feeding and watch normal swimming, appetite, breathing and fin condition. Rearranging safe enrichment occasionally can add exploration without introducing another fish.
Can a betta have tank mates?
Tank mates are optional, not a treatment for loneliness. In a larger, mature, filtered aquarium, some peaceful fish, snails, shrimp or frogs may coexist with an individual betta. Success depends on the particular betta, the other species, available hiding space and the owner’s ability to intervene immediately.
Before attempting a community aquarium, evaluate each of these factors:

| Consideration | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Aggression and injury risk | A territorial betta may chase, bite or be harassed; damage can occur before an owner notices. |
| Swimming space | Additional animals increase congestion and reduce escape routes. |
| Hiding and enrichment | Plants and smooth shelters let animals avoid one another and express normal behaviors. |
| Filtration and water capacity | More animals produce more waste and require a mature biological filter and dependable maintenance. |
| Species and temperament | Compatibility is not guaranteed by a species list; individual behavior varies. |
| Emergency removal | You need a cycled quarantine or spare container and a plan to separate animals at once. |
Observe closely after any introduction. Persistent chasing, torn fins, hiding, clamped fins, refusal to eat or rapid breathing means the animals should be separated rather than given more time to “work it out.” Never place two male bettas together. Female groups are also not automatically safe; territorial aggression can still cause injury.

Look for a steady appetite, regular surface visits, active but unstrained swimming, interest in its surroundings and intact fins. A fish that spends much of the day motionless, hides continuously, gasps, repeatedly struggles against the filter flow or develops fin and skin changes needs an environmental and health assessment—not a companion by default.

Check temperature, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, filtration, current strength and recently added decorations first. If water conditions are acceptable but illness or injury is suspected, consult an aquatic veterinarian or an experienced, reputable fish professional.
A simple decision rule
- If you have one betta, plan a properly filtered and heated aquarium with cover and enrichment; do not buy a second betta to prevent loneliness.
- If you want a community aquarium, select a larger, established system and research every proposed species for behavior, size and water requirements.
- Introduce only one compatible animal at a time, supervise continuously and keep a separation plan ready.
- Remove a tank mate immediately when aggression, harassment or stress signs appear.
The strongest evidence-based conclusion is behavioral: bettas generally do best housed alone, while space, enrichment and water quality determine whether that solitary environment is healthy and stimulating.
