Look at the whole interaction, not just the chasing or wrestling. Cats are more likely playing when the bout is quiet, reciprocal, broken up by pauses, and followed by both cats relaxing or carrying on normally. Conflict is more likely when one cat repeatedly pursues while the other tries to escape, or when tense body language and vocalizations appear.
Clues that your cats are playing
- They take turns. Both cats chase, pursue, or end up on top during wrestling; neither is always the target.
- The bout is mostly quiet. Wrestling without vocalization is more consistent with play, though it is not proof by itself. The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines caution that chasing, wrestling, and mouthing can occur in both play and conflict.
- They pause and re-engage. Play often includes brief breaks as cats reposition or prepare to chase again. Biting may happen, but is generally gentle, with claws usually retracted. Cats Protection’s guidance on aggression between cats describes these as common play-fighting patterns.
- Both cats seem comfortable afterward. They return to their usual behavior without obvious ongoing tension.
Clues that the interaction may be a fight
- One-sided pursuit: the same cat repeatedly chases while the other hides, flees, or does not choose to re-engage.
- Threatening or distressed signals: flattened ears, a tense posture, a swishing tail, growling, hissing, or screeching. Rapid flailing swipes while standing on the hind legs also raise concern. These signs are described by Cats Protection.
- A cat cannot get away: crouching, leaning away, a tucked tail, dilated pupils, raised fur, hissing, swatting, biting, or scratching may occur when a cat feels threatened and cannot escape. The ASPCA’s overview of cat aggression describes these combinations; one signal alone does not prove that a bout is a fight.
- The relationship is strained outside the bout: repeated staring, blocking access, or avoiding one another can point to tension even when there is no dramatic fight. Cats in conflict may not reliably show friendly behavior toward each other at other times, according to the AAFP guidelines.
Judge the sequence and the cats’ relationship
Ask what happened before the bout, whether each cat had a real choice to leave, and what happened afterward. Notice whether both cats voluntarily return to the interaction, whether roles alternate, and whether either cat hides or stays tense. Consider their behavior at other times too: staring or blocking can be subtle signs of tension. A video or photos may help a veterinary professional assess an episode, but no single clip or signal can establish a diagnosis without context.
How to interrupt a fight safely
Do not reach between fighting cats, try to pick up an agitated cat, or put any part of your body between them. A frightened or aroused cat may redirect aggression toward a nearby person or animal; the ASPCA advises avoiding an agitated cat and not physically breaking up a fight.
- Interrupt without touching. If it is safe to do so, use a distraction such as a toy or noise to pause the interaction. Keep any toy well away from your hands; a wand-style toy can direct attention at a distance. Cats Protection suggests distraction, and Cornell Feline Health Center cautions against placing hands or body parts between cats.
- Give them space to cool down. Once separated, allow time apart before approaching, stroking, or picking either cat up. If you need to separate them, use a barrier such as a panel or baby gate rather than your hands, if that can be done safely; Cornell identifies these as possible tools.
- Get help if conflict continues. Separate the cats and contact your veterinarian or a qualified cat behavior professional. For persistent aggression that is difficult to manage, Cornell recommends working with a veterinarian and consulting a veterinary behaviorist.
When a sudden change calls for veterinary advice
Cats that were previously compatible may start fighting after time away from home, a change in scent, a frightening noise, seeing an unfamiliar cat, or another change in the household. Pain or illness can also contribute to aggression. The ASPCA and Cornell list possible medical contributors such as dental disease, arthritis or osteoarthritis, injury, and other conditions; the ASPCA also mentions abscesses, while Cornell includes hyperthyroidism and central nervous system problems. These possibilities are reasons to arrange a veterinary assessment, not a way to diagnose the cause from behavior alone. Seek veterinary help for unusual or persistent aggression, or if either cat may be injured.
