Ornamental pepper (Solanum pseudocapsicum) is listed as toxic to cats by the ASPCA. But “pepper plant” can mean different plants: Pepper Face and baby rubber plant are common names for Peperomia obtusifolia, which the ASPCA lists as non-toxic to cats. Check the scientific name rather than relying on a similar common name. If your cat may have eaten ornamental pepper, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control promptly.
Which pepper plant is poisonous to cats?
The answer depends on the plant’s identity. The ASPCA lists ornamental pepper (Solanum pseudocapsicum) as toxic to cats. It is also known as Natal Cherry, Winter Cherry, and Jerusalem Cherry. “Pepper Face,” by contrast, is a common name for Peperomia obtusifolia, a different species listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats.

Because common names can overlap or be used imprecisely, compare the scientific name on a plant label with a reliable plant listing. A retail label alone does not confirm what a particular specimen is.

How the two plants differ
| Plant identity | Common names in the ASPCA listings | ASPCA cat-toxicity classification |
|---|---|---|
| Solanum pseudocapsicum | Ornamental pepper, Natal Cherry, Winter Cherry, Jerusalem Cherry | Toxic to cats |
| Peperomia obtusifolia | Pepper Face, Baby Rubber Plant, American Rubber Plant | Non-toxic to cats |
These classifications are the ASPCA’s; “non-toxic” is not a promise that eating a plant cannot cause any upset, nor does it verify the identity of a plant sold under a common name. The ASPCA also lists Green Ripple Peperomia (Peperomia caperata) as non-toxic to cats.

What signs can ornamental pepper cause?
The ASPCA identifies solanine as the toxic principle in ornamental pepper. Its listing names gastrointestinal disturbance and possible gastrointestinal ulceration, as well as seizures, depression, respiratory depression, and shock, as potential clinical signs. These are listed possibilities, not a prediction that every exposure will cause them.
The available listing does not establish a dose threshold, time to symptom onset, or an individual cat’s prognosis. Do not use the absence of symptoms—or a partial symptom list—to decide that an exposure is safe.

What to do if your cat may have eaten ornamental pepper
- Contact a professional promptly. The ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control as soon as possible when a pet may have ingested a potentially toxic substance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear or worsen before seeking advice.
- Call ASPCA Animal Poison Control if appropriate. The ASPCA listing gives the number as (888) 426-4435 and notes that a consultation fee may apply.
- Share the plant identity if you can. Tell the professional the scientific name from the label, if available, and what you know about the possible exposure. If identification is uncertain, say so rather than assuming “pepper plant” means one particular species.
The ASPCA listing does not provide a home-treatment protocol; follow the instructions of your veterinarian or poison-control professional.
Why plant poisoning calls matter
In a 2022 handout, Pet Poison Helpline said plants accounted for approximately 14% of its feline-related calls and described plants as the second most common toxin in those calls. That figure refers to calls received by that helpline, not the percentage of all cats or all poisoning events.
