Cats Protection also includes named prayer-plant examples among houseplants it lists as non-toxic to cats. That classification does not mean a plant is food or that eating it can never cause discomfort. If your cat has chewed an unidentified plant or seems unwell, contact a veterinarian.
How prayer plants are classified for cats
The ASPCA’s prayer-plant entry lists the scientific name Calathea insignis, includes Maranta among its common names, and classifies the plant as “Non-Toxic to Dogs, Non-Toxic to Cats, Non-Toxic to Horses.” The entry also identifies its toxic principles as non-toxic. See the ASPCA prayer-plant listing.

The ASPCA has separate listings that classify Calathea species and Maranta as non-toxic to cats. ASPCA Calathea listing and ASPCA Maranta listing. Cats Protection likewise includes prayer plants, giving Calathea orbifolia and Maranta leuconeura as examples in its list of common houseplants non-toxic to cats. Read Cats Protection’s plant guidance.
Check the botanical name on your plant
“Prayer plant” is a common name, not a precise identification for every plant sold under that label. The ASPCA entry uses Calathea insignis, while Cats Protection gives Calathea orbifolia and Maranta leuconeura as examples. Check the botanical name on the plant tag or ask the seller if you are unsure what you have; do not assume a loose common name confirms the identity of a particular specimen.

What to do if your cat eats a prayer plant
- Check the plant’s identity. Use its botanical label if available. If you cannot identify it confidently, treat the plant as unknown rather than assuming it is a prayer plant.
- Contact a veterinarian if you are concerned. The ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control when a pet may have ingested a potentially toxic substance and the owner is concerned. This is especially appropriate if the plant identity is uncertain or your cat appears unwell. Read the ASPCA’s general houseplant safety guidance.
- Do not infer a safe amount from the non-toxic classification. The cited listings do not establish a safe quantity to eat, and they do not guarantee that ingestion cannot cause discomfort.
