Are Roses Safe for Cats? What to Do About Petals, Thorns and Chemicals

True roses are not considered toxic to cats, but eating plant material can upset the stomach. Learn what to do about thorns, chemicals and uncertain plant identities.

True roses (Rosa species) are not considered toxic to cats. Eating rose leaves or petals can still upset a cat’s stomach, and thorns, pesticides, flower food and vase water create separate risks. If your cat ate a rose, the right response depends on what it encountered—not just the flower’s name.

First, make sure it is a true rose

“Rose” in a common name does not always mean the plant is a true rose. The ASPCA lists Rose (Rosa species) separately from Moss Rose (Portulaca oleracea), which it classifies as toxic to cats. If you are unsure what your cat reached, identify the plant by its scientific name or ask a veterinarian rather than relying on a label or appearance.

The ASPCA’s cat plant database is not all-inclusive. Its listing for Moss Rose illustrates why a rose-like common name is not enough to establish safety.

What can still harm a cat around roses?

Leaves and petals

Although true roses are not considered toxic, eating plant material may cause vomiting or other gastrointestinal upset. The ASPCA gives this as general guidance for plant material; PetMD also notes mild stomach upset can occur after a cat eats rose material. “Non-toxic” therefore does not mean a rose is food or that every cat will remain symptom-free.

Thorns

Thorns can cut or puncture a cat’s mouth or paws. A thorn that is chewed or swallowed may also injure the eyes, skin or digestive tract. The ASPCA specifically warns about possible mouth and paw trauma from rose thorns in its bouquet safety guidance.

Chemicals, flower food and vase water

A bouquet may involve exposures other than the flower itself. PetMD identifies pesticides, flower food and vase or stagnant water as concerns. If your cat may have licked treated water, eaten flower food or contacted a pesticide or insecticide, treat that as a separate exposure and call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.

What to do if your cat ate or touched a rose

What happened What to do
A few petals or leaves; no suspected chemical treatment and no symptoms Remove the rose and observe your cat. Contact your veterinarian if vomiting or stomach upset repeats, persists, worsens or otherwise concerns you.
A thorn was chewed or may have been swallowed, or there is an injury Contact a veterinarian for advice, especially if a thorn may have been swallowed or your cat seems painful. Eye injuries, punctures or more significant damage need veterinary assessment.
Possible pesticide, insecticide, flower-food or treated-water exposure Keep your cat away from the source and call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for severe symptoms before seeking case-specific advice.
The plant’s identity is uncertain or it may be a rose-like plant Find the scientific name or ask a veterinarian. Do not assume it is safe because “rose” appears in its common name.

For a minor thorn wound

PetMD says a minor, superficial wound may be cleaned with pet-safe antimicrobial wipes or a cat-safe wound cleanser. That limited first-aid guidance does not replace a veterinarian’s assessment if the wound is significant, the cat is painful, or a thorn may have been swallowed.

Signs that warrant prompt veterinary advice

For possible pesticide poisoning, PetMD lists vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, fever, lethargy, seizures, tremors, breathing difficulty, drooling and trouble walking among possible signs. These symptoms are not a diagnosis, and an owner should not wait for severe signs to appear before contacting a professional when a chemical exposure is suspected.

How to make a rose bouquet safer

  • Keep flowers and cut stems out of your cat’s reach, particularly if your cat chews plants or bats at arrangements.
  • Prevent access to thorns, vase water and any flower-food solution.
  • Check the plant’s identity instead of treating every plant with “rose” in its name as Rosa.
  • If you cannot rule out pesticide or other chemical exposure, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming the rose itself explains what happened.

PetMD’s article “Are Roses Toxic to Cats?” was written by Barri J. Morrison, DVM, reviewed by Veronica Higgs, DVM, and updated February 3, 2025. The ASPCA’s bouquet guidance was published May 6, 2020; its plant listings are live database pages.
