Both are common-name groupings within the family Salmonidae, and those names do not form a strict taxonomic divide. Pacific salmon and rainbow trout share the genus Oncorhynchus, while Atlantic salmon and brown trout share the genus Salmo.
Salmon do not simply live in the ocean while trout stay in freshwater: steelhead are rainbow trout that migrate to the sea, while some rainbow trout remain in freshwater. To identify a particular fish, use its species and a location-specific identification key rather than relying on its common name, habitat, or color alone.
How salmon and trout are related
Salmon and trout belong to the family Salmonidae, which also includes char, whitefish, taimen, lenok, and grayling. “Salmon” and “trout” are common names, not single scientific ranks, and they cover species in multiple genera.
That means the name alone does not tell you exactly how two fish are related. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) are different species in the same genus. Pacific salmon such as Chinook and sockeye and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) belong to the same genus, but they are not the same species.

Examples of salmon and trout species
| Common name | Scientific name or group | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic salmon | Salmo salar | A salmon in the same genus as brown trout. |
| Brown trout | Salmo trutta | A trout in the same genus as Atlantic salmon. |
| Chinook salmon | Oncorhynchus tshawytscha | A Pacific salmon in the same genus as rainbow trout. |
| Rainbow trout | Oncorhynchus mykiss | A trout whose sea-migrating form is called steelhead. |
| Sockeye salmon | Oncorhynchus nerka | A Pacific salmon in the genus Oncorhynchus. |
| Brook trout | Salvelinus fontinalis | A fish called trout in the char genus Salvelinus. |
| Lake trout | Salvelinus namaycush | Another fish called trout in the char genus Salvelinus. |
These examples show why common names do not create a clean biological split. Sharing a genus does not mean two fish are the same species.
Do salmon live in the ocean while trout stay in freshwater?
No. Many salmon are anadromous: they begin life in freshwater, migrate to the sea, and return to freshwater to spawn. But some trout migrate to sea too, and some salmonid populations remain in freshwater.
Steelhead is the name for rainbow trout that migrate to the sea. Other rainbow trout populations may live entirely in freshwater. Habitat can help describe a fish’s life history, but it does not by itself determine whether the fish is called a salmon or a trout.

How life cycles differ
Salmonid life histories vary by species and population. NOAA Fisheries describes Atlantic salmon as beginning life in rivers, migrating to the ocean to feed and mature, then returning to their natal rivers. Atlantic salmon can spawn more than once, although repeat spawning is increasingly rare.
Some Pacific salmon, including sockeye and Chinook, die after spawning. Atlantic salmon, trout, and char can spawn more than once. So neither “all salmon die after spawning” nor “all trout stay in freshwater” is a reliable rule.
Can you tell salmon and trout apart by appearance?
There is no universal appearance rule for every salmon and trout. Color and markings can change with habitat, age, and life stage, and juvenile salmonids can be difficult for non-experts to identify. Use a validated identification key for the species and location rather than relying on one visual trait.

Atlantic salmon and brown trout: a specific field comparison
Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife distinguishes Atlantic salmon from brown trout by features around the head and tail. Its key describes Atlantic salmon as having small vomerine teeth in a single row on the shaft, with few or none on the head of the vomer. Brown trout have well-developed teeth on the head and shaft, with the shaft teeth in a zig-zag row. The department also notes that a salmon’s caudal fin may be slightly forked, while a brown trout’s is square and unforked. This is a key for those two fish in Maine, not a general test for all salmonids.
A careful identification process
- Start with the common name, but treat it as provisional. “Salmon” or “trout” may not identify the exact species.
- Consider the location. Species and common names differ across regions, and identification keys are often geographically specific.
- Check habitat and life history. Note whether the fish stays in freshwater or migrates to the sea, but do not use that alone to classify it.
- Use several species-specific traits. Compare anatomy and markings using a validated regional key; avoid treating color as a universal test.
- Check the scientific name or ask an expert. Juvenile salmonids can be difficult for amateurs to distinguish.
- Follow local rules if fishing. Consult current local fisheries guidance, especially when catch or size restrictions apply.
Are salmon and trout the same as food?
No. “Salmon” and “trout” are useful food labels, but they do not mean the fish are taxonomically identical. Trout products may come from different salmonid species depending on the country and market.

No. Flesh color varies and is not a reliable species test. Use a species-specific identification resource instead.
The Bottom Line
Salmon and trout are related but distinct common-name groupings within Salmonidae. Their names overlap across genera, and migration, appearance, or color alone cannot reliably distinguish every fish. Identify a particular fish with a regional, species-specific key.
