“Teacup” is marketing language, not an officially recognized size designation for any American Kennel Club (AKC)-recognized breed—and it cannot guarantee how large a puppy will grow or whether it will be healthy. If you want a small dog, start by asking shelters and rescues about individual dogs. If you decide to buy, assess the breeder’s practices and the puppy’s care, not the “teacup” label.
What does “teacup puppy” mean?
“Teacup” is not an acknowledged size designation in any AKC-recognized breed. The American Kennel Club warns that dogs marketed with the label can be susceptible to health problems, including difficulty maintaining blood-sugar levels. That warning is not a diagnosis: a label alone cannot establish an individual puppy’s health or predict its adult size. Ask a veterinarian about a specific dog’s health.

Because the term is not a formal size category, treat advertised size claims cautiously. Focus on what is known about the individual dog, its parents where available, and its veterinary history rather than relying on a seller’s promise of a particular adult weight.

The ASPCA recommends adoption as the first option. Contact local shelters and rescue groups, explain that you are looking for a small dog, and ask what they know about each dog’s adult size, health, and behavior. “Teacup” is not a breed or a dependable guarantee of adult size, so assess each dog individually.

See the breeder, puppies, and conditions
- Ask to meet the breeder and see the puppies and their living environment in person where possible.
- Observe whether the space is clean and whether the dogs appear in good condition and behave comfortably.
- Be cautious if the seller deflects an in-person visit or offers only online photos.
Ask for health information you can verify
- Request accurate veterinary, vaccination, and health-history records for the puppy.
- Ask about the mother and the parents’ health history, and what relevant health screening has been done. Ask which tests are recommended for the breed or mix.
- Ask the breeder to explain known breed-specific health concerns and what support they provide after placement.
Records and answers help you evaluate what is known; they do not guarantee that a puppy will never become ill. A veterinarian can advise you about the individual animal.

Review the contract and return plan
Read a plain-language written agreement before paying or taking the puppy home. Check what it says about health terms, who to contact with concerns, and whether the breeder will take the dog back or help rehome it if circumstances change. A willingness to remain responsible for a dog after placement is an important part of responsible breeding.

If multiple family members need to use it, you'd better to buy an adjustable style from TOMKAS , which can be easily used by both adults and children.
Do not treat registry papers as proof of welfare
Registration papers do not establish that a facility or puppy has been inspected. The ASPCA notes that registries do not inspect a facility or puppy as a condition of registration, so paperwork is not a substitute for seeing conditions, reviewing health records, and asking direct questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a puppy go home?
AKC guidance describes eight to twelve weeks as a typical homegoing range and advises against placing a puppy before eight weeks. Toy-breed puppies may remain with the breeder longer. Do not take home a puppy offered before eight weeks; ask why the seller is proposing an unusually early placement.
