Yes. The major box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) in far northern Australia can cause cardiac arrest and death, and smaller box jellyfish associated with Irukandji syndrome can cause delayed, life-threatening complications. Bluebottle stings are usually very painful but generally not life-threatening. What to do depends on the suspected stinger: tropical box-jellyfish and Irukandji stings need urgent emergency care, while bluebottle first aid is different.

Which Australian jellyfish can be dangerous?

Stinger Where and when What a sting may do First-aid distinction
Major box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) Far northern tropical waters. Tropical marine stingers occur year-round; risk is higher during the usual November–May season. Severe immediate pain and whip-like red marks; a severe sting can cause cardiac arrest and death. Call Triple Zero (000), use vinegar as directed below, and get urgent hospital care.
Irukandji-type box jellyfish Tropical northern waters; these small stingers can be difficult to see. The initial sting may be minor, followed by delayed severe pain and potentially dangerous cardiovascular effects. Call Triple Zero (000) and treat as a suspected tropical sting; urgent hospital assessment is needed.
Bluebottle (Physalia species) Common around Australia, especially eastern Queensland and New South Wales. Often intensely painful, but generally not dangerous. Rinse with seawater and use hot water that will not burn; do not use vinegar.
Other stingers, including mauve stingers, hair jellyfish and jimble Locations vary. Can cause painful local marks; not every Australian jellyfish is lethal. If the species or risk is unclear, follow local emergency advice.

Queensland’s Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation reports that at least 70 fatal box-jellyfish stings have been recorded across Australia since 1880. That historical total does not indicate an individual beach’s current risk.

Where and when is the risk highest?

The main tropical marine-stinger risk is along northern Australian coastlines. Healthdirect advises treating an unidentified sting as a possible box-jellyfish sting north of Bundaberg in Queensland and Geraldton in Western Australia. Queensland Government and WorkSafe Queensland describe November–May as the typical marine-stinger season, while warning that tropical stingers can be present all year and local conditions vary. Follow beach closures and local warnings rather than relying on the calendar.

How do box-jellyfish and Irukandji stings differ?

Major box jellyfish

A Chironex fleckeri sting typically causes immediate, intense pain with whip-like red lines where tentacles touched the skin. Severe stings can rapidly affect the heart and may be fatal. Queensland’s Primary Clinical Care Manual (2019) warns that contact with several metres of tentacle can cause rapid cardiovascular collapse and death.

Irukandji syndrome

An Irukandji-type sting may initially look minor. About 20–40 minutes later, symptoms can include severe back, abdominal and muscle pain, headache, sweating, nausea or vomiting, restlessness, a fast heart rate and high blood pressure. Cardiac complications are possible, so do not wait for symptoms to become severe before seeking help after a suspected tropical sting.

What should you do after a jellyfish sting?

Suspected box jellyfish or Irukandji sting

  1. Get out of the water and call Triple Zero (000). Ask a lifeguard or lifesaver for help if one is available.
  2. Check breathing and responsiveness. If the person is unconscious or not breathing normally, start CPR.
  3. Use vinegar on the sting area for at least 30 seconds and carefully remove tentacles as directed by emergency services. If vinegar is unavailable, use seawater. Do not put fresh water on attached tentacles.
  4. Go to hospital urgently. Box-jellyfish antivenom and cardiac monitoring may be required.

Bluebottle sting

  1. Leave the water and rinse the affected area with seawater.
  2. Remove tentacles, then apply hot water that will not burn the skin.
  3. Do not use vinegar: it is specifically discouraged for suspected bluebottle stings because it may worsen pain.

How can you reduce the chance of a sting?

  • Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags and obey stinger warnings and closure signs.
  • Use stinger nets where provided, but do not assume a net excludes every stinger; smaller Irukandji-type jellyfish may pass through some barriers.
  • In tropical waters, wear a full-body lycra suit or purpose-made stinger suit to reduce exposed skin.
  • Do not touch jellyfish washed onto the beach; they may still sting.
