“About 70% of America’s mussels are vanishing” is a rounded way to describe a grave conservation picture, not a precise new count of annual losses. A 2026 review puts North America’s native freshwater-mussel fauna at roughly 300 species, with more than two-thirds considered imperiled. Against that backdrop, a peer-reviewed study published September 23, 2026, formally recognized five previously undescribed hickorynut species in southern U.S. river basins.
The mussels were not five wholly unknown animals discovered during one expedition. Researchers recognized cryptic species among museum and field specimens that had often been identified as more widespread mussels. The findings show why accurate taxonomy matters: a species confined to one basin can disappear locally while being overlooked in a catch-all species designation.

Are 70% of America’s freshwater mussels really vanishing?
More than two-thirds of North America’s approximately 300 freshwater-mussel species are considered imperiled in the 2026 conservation review. “Around 70%” is a rounded headline formulation of that fraction; it is not a newly measured, exact national statistic and does not mean every species is declining at the same rate.
“Imperiled” describes elevated conservation risk. Freshwater mussels face that risk as river habitats are altered or degraded, but the review’s figure is a broad status assessment rather than a claim that 70% disappeared during a particular year.

What did the 2026 study discover?
A Zootaxa paper published on September 23, 2026, by Kentaro Inoue, John L. Harris and Nathan A. Johnson describes five new species in the genus Obovaria. The authors also recognize Pseudoon olivarium as a distinct combination, a taxonomic change separate from the five new species.
The team examined museum holdings and field material from rivers across the southern United States. They compared shell form and other conchological characters with geographic distributions, then tested relationships using molecular phylogenetic evidence. That combination was important because mussel shells are plastic: similar-looking populations can represent separate evolutionary lineages, and members of one species can vary in appearance.

What are the five new hickorynut species and where were they found?
Each new hickorynut has a named range tied to particular southern river systems. The study’s geography spans six states, but the ranges are not interchangeable; several are confined to a single basin or a small set of connected drainages.

How were cryptic mussel species recognized?
The key advance was integrating several kinds of evidence rather than relying on shell appearance. Comparative conchology documented consistent morphological differences, distribution data showed that lineages occupied distinct basins, and DNA-based phylogenetic analyses tested whether those lineages were evolutionarily separate.
This approach can reveal “cryptic” diversity: species that look enough alike to be grouped under one name. In this case, specimens already held by natural-history institutions and collected in the field contained evidence of lineages that had not previously been formally separated. The result is a taxonomic clarification, not a claim that five animals had never been seen by people.

Why does naming these mussels matter for rivers?
Freshwater mussels are filter-feeding animals that live in river ecosystems. When several distinct species are treated as one widespread species, a local disappearance can be masked by records from another basin. Managers may then direct surveys, habitat work or risk assessments toward the wrong geographic unit.
Recognizing the five Obovaria species supports basin-specific conservation planning. It also gives scientists a more accurate basis for evaluating extinction risk, because a mussel restricted to one drainage faces a different set of threats and recovery options from a species spread across many watersheds.
Lead author Kentaro Inoue, a research biologist at Shedd Aquarium, said: “Identifying new species is the foundation of biodiversity conservation. Conservation efforts can only protect what we recognize, and without this work, we risk certain species going extinct before they’re even known to science.”

Are the five new mussel species protected?
Not all five had federal protection in the status reported for October 2026. Only the Acolapissa hickorynut had been proposed for federal protection; the other four had no federal assessments reported at that time.

A proposal is not the same as a final listing, and the status of any species can change as agencies complete reviews. Anyone making a current regulatory or conservation decision should verify the latest federal and state records rather than treating the October 2026 snapshot as permanent.

The study’s authors emphasize coordination among federal and state agencies, nongovernmental organizations and natural-history institutions. USGS co-author Nathan Johnson said those collaborations help inform management decisions that protect waterways while supporting fish, wildlife and human communities.
For the public, the central lesson is straightforward: a river can contain more biodiversity than its species list suggests. Formal recognition does not by itself restore habitat or secure a listing, but it makes targeted protection possible and reduces the chance that a local extinction is hidden by an overly broad name.

Does an imperiled status mean a mussel is already federally listed?
No. A scientific conservation assessment and a legal federal listing are separate outcomes. A species may be judged at risk while having no federal assessment, as was reported for four of the five new hickorynuts.
Can a photograph identify one of these hickorynuts reliably?
Not necessarily. Similar shell shapes and environmentally influenced variation can make visual identification uncertain, which is why the study combined morphology, geography and molecular evidence.
Why can old museum specimens be important in a new species description?
Collections preserve physical material from places and times that may be difficult to sample again. Reexamining those specimens can reveal overlooked geographic patterns or evolutionary lineages when researchers apply newer comparisons and genetic tools.
Will all five new species automatically receive federal protection?
