How many dog attacks on WA posties were recorded?
PerthNow reported that 152 WA posties had experienced a dog-related incident in the six months before its 4 November 2024 article, attributing the figure to Australia Post data. The report’s headline used “dog attacks,” but the reported category was broader: “dog-related incidents.” The figure is historical and should not be read as a current count. PerthNow’s report
Which WA suburbs were named?
The 2024 PerthNow article identified Rockingham, Nedlands, Geraldton and Bunbury as the WA suburbs with the most incidents in the period it covered. That is the report’s historical ranking, not a current list of hotspots.
How does the WA figure compare with national figures?
Australia Post’s FY2025 annual report recorded more than 2,797 dog-related incidents across Australia over the past 12 months, 2.8% above the 2,721 recorded in FY24. Separately, an Australia Post campaign page says more than 1,420 incidents were reported nationally and 55 posties were affected per week during a six-month period; it also says 50% of incidents occurred on customer property. What should dog owners do when a postie is delivering?
Australia Post advises owners to secure dogs regardless of breed or temperament. Rod Maule, the organisation’s General Manager of Safety and Wellbeing, said: “Regardless of the breed or temperament of your dog, we implore owners to secure their dog safely in a back garden, on a leash, or in another room when expecting parcel deliveries or mail, whether or not you are at home.” Australia Post’s campaign guidance

- Separate the dog before delivery. Put it in a contained area, a separate room or behind a locked gate.
- Keep it secured until the delivery is complete. Australia Post says the dog should remain restrained throughout the delivery.
- Choose another delivery location if secure separation is not possible. Australia Post recommends a Parcel Locker as an alternative. Its page describes Parcel Lockers as free, convenient and accessible 24/7.
- Use delivery information to plan ahead. Australia Post says its app can provide live delivery times and dog-safety reminders.
A gate or pet barrier may help in a suitable doorway, but it needs to create a genuinely secure separation for the dog and delivery route; a barrier that can be pushed aside or jumped over is not a reliable restraint. Australia Post’s guidance does not replace any applicable local legal obligations.
