A small rabbit outdoors is not necessarily abandoned: a healthy, uninjured kit in its nest is usually best left there. For a domestic rabbit, choose a reputable rescue, keep its diet stable during the move, prepare a secure indoor space, and arrange care with a veterinarian who treats rabbits.
Found a baby bunny outdoors? Check before you intervene
Wild rabbit mothers usually visit their nests briefly rather than staying beside their young. A warm, quiet kit sitting in a shallow grass nest, with no visible injury, is generally safer left with its mother than taken indoors. Keep people and pets away, leave the nest intact, and observe from a distance for 24 hours. Do not handle or feed the kit just because you do not see its mother.
When to get help
Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or a rabbit-savvy veterinarian for instructions if the kit is cold, limp, continuously crying, visibly injured, or in immediate danger. Get help as well if the nest has been destroyed and cannot safely be restored. If you are unsure whether the rabbit is wild or domestic, establish that first: a found domestic rabbit may need a different response. Do not give food or move the animal without appropriate guidance. Rabbit.org provides further guidance on found rabbits and adoption.
Choosing a domestic baby rabbit to adopt
Start with a reputable rabbit rescue or adoption group. Rescue staff can often explain a rabbit’s age, health, socialization, current diet, and veterinary history. Ask what care it has already received, what follow-up is needed, and whether it is spayed or neutered or needs a veterinarian’s plan. Rabbit.org advises against getting rabbits from pet stores or online breeders.

Age and development
Domestic babies should stay with their mothers for at least eight weeks to support weaning and gut development. Do not casually separate a litter early. If a kit is orphaned, weak, dehydrated, or otherwise unwell, contact an experienced rehabilitator or rabbit-savvy veterinarian promptly. Orphan care has age-specific feeding and digestive risks; it is not a safe do-it-yourself project, and children should not bottle-feed a kit.
Fit with your household
Ask how the rabbit’s needs fit your available space, daily routine, children, and other pets. Some rabbits are adopted as bonded pairs and should remain with their companion. Compare the rabbit’s developmental needs, health and veterinary history, temperament, socialization, and any existing bond, as well as the rescue’s ability to support the transition. Adoption criteria and procedures differ by location, so ask your local rescue about its policies. The RSPCA’s rabbit guidance also emphasizes matching rabbits to the household.

Prepare a safe home before the rabbit arrives
Set up a quiet, secure indoor pen or rabbit-safe room with sturdy flooring, a hiding place, and room to move and exercise. A small cage by itself is not a complete setup. Protect or block access to electrical cords, and provide safe ways to chew and explore. Rabbit.org’s general care guidance recommends several hours of exercise.
Starter supplies
- Indoor space: an exercise pen or rabbit-safe room, plus a hiding place.
- Water: fresh, clean water in a suitable dish.
- Hay and food: hay and plain pellets appropriate to the rabbit’s age, along with its familiar food. Ask the rescue or veterinarian before changing a young rabbit’s established diet.
- Litter area: an open litter tray with paper-based litter. Avoid clumping litter.
- Enrichment and safety: safe chew options and protected wiring.
Singapore’s Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) rabbit guidance covers enclosure space, hiding places, bedding, litter, and food. Its advice is specific to its local context; use it alongside your rescue’s guidance and a veterinarian’s advice for your rabbit.

Keep food steady through the move
Moving home is not the time to make an unplanned diet change. Continue the rabbit’s familiar food and provide fresh water unless the rescue or veterinarian gives you a different plan. Hay is a core food, but the appropriate type depends on age and current diet: AVS says younger rabbits can be fed alfalfa, while adults should have grass hay. Too much alfalfa for an adult can contribute to obesity and other health problems.
Rabbit.org advises introducing one safe green at a time in tiny amounts after weaning. The right portions and pace depend on the rabbit’s age, health, and existing diet, so ask the rescue or veterinarian for an individualized transition plan rather than guessing.

Arrange veterinary care and recognize urgent signs
Before an emergency, identify a veterinarian who treats rabbits. Ontario SPCA recommends a veterinary check-in within the first week after adoption. The visit can cover physical and oral health, diet, behavior, parasites, and an individual preventive-care plan. Ask the rescue for the rabbit’s medical history and discuss spay or neuter timing with the veterinarian. Recommendations and veterinary systems vary by location; follow local professional advice.
Seek prompt veterinary help for these signs
- Coldness, limpness, lethargy, bloating, diarrhea, or refusal to eat.
- Labored or abnormal breathing, visible wounds, or fly eggs or larvae.
- Abnormal or absent feces or urine, head tilt, lameness, or overgrown teeth or nails.
Contact a rabbit-capable veterinarian promptly if a young rabbit shows any of these signs; do not wait to see whether it improves on its own. AVS lists additional warning signs and care guidance at its rabbit page.
