Maple was born on August 2, 2026; the cookie comparison and additional growth figures come from an iHeartDogs report, while the zoo’s official profile confirms her identity and birth.
How big is Maple?
Maple is a female pygmy hippo born at the Toronto Zoo on August 2, 2026. An October 6 iHeartDogs story reported that the zoo illustrated her size with roughly six packages of President’s Choice The Decadent Chocolate Chunk Cookies stacked together. The comparison gives readers a memorable sense of scale, but it does not provide Maple’s height in centimetres or establish a standardized measuring method. The zoo’s official Maple profile confirms her birth and identity, but does not independently confirm the cookie display.
The comparison is about packages, not cookies fed to Maple. It is a visual illustration of her size, not a measurement of her weight or length.
What else has been reported about her growth?
According to iHeartDogs, Maple weighed 10.8 kilograms (about 23 pounds) by the time her name was announced, less than three weeks after birth. The same story said she was beginning to grow teeth and explore water. Those details are secondary reporting; they are not independently confirmed on the Toronto Zoo profile linked above.

iHeartDogs also attributed general pygmy hippo growth figures to the Toronto Zoo: newborns weigh between 4.5 and 6.5 kilograms, may gain roughly 300 to 600 grams per day, and can double their birth weight within three weeks. The article likewise attributed adult figures of roughly 1.5 to 1.8 metres long and 160 to 270 kilograms to the zoo. These figures should be understood as reported by iHeartDogs, rather than as details verified on Maple’s official profile.
The article described the zoo as saying Maple was “growing faster than we can keep up with.” Because the original zoo post or release was not available to verify that wording, the quote is attributable here to the iHeartDogs account, not to a named zoo speaker.

Who is Maple, and can visitors see her?
The Toronto Zoo describes Maple as an endangered pygmy hippo calf and Canada’s only pygmy hippo calf. She is one of three pygmy hippos in the country, alongside her parents, Kindia and Harvey. The zoo notes that Maple and her mother may choose to spend time behind the scenes, so visitors should not assume she will be visible on any particular visit. Check the zoo’s Maple page for its current viewing information.
