Its curled posture, with its head resting along its belly, resembles a posture seen in developing birds and offers evidence that bird-like pre-hatching behavior may have deeper roots among theropod dinosaurs. The fossil is not literally perfect: parts of its skeleton are missing, and sediment makes some bones difficult to distinguish.
What is Baby Yingliang?
Baby Yingliang is the name given to specimen YLSNHM01266, an articulated embryo of an oviraptorid dinosaur preserved within an elongatoolithid egg. It comes from the Late Cretaceous Hekou Formation in southern China. The 2021 study describes it as an exceptionally preserved in-egg theropod embryo, a rare kind of fossil because embryos are often found as scattered bones rather than articulated skeletons. The study in iScience provides the specimen and posture analysis.
How old is the fossil?
Its age is estimated from the rocks where it was found, rather than established as an exact date. National Geographic described the rock as roughly 70 million years old and noted that the precise age is uncertain; the University of Edinburgh gave a range of 72 to 66 million years. Those are geological estimates for the fossil’s setting, not a precise age for the individual egg. National Geographic’s 2021 report and the University of Edinburgh summary describe these estimates.
What does the embryo’s curled position mean?
The embryo is curled inside the egg, with its head tucked along its belly. The researchers compared this arrangement with “tucking,” a pre-hatching posture in birds. They suggest that this bird-like behavior may have originated earlier among theropods than previously recognized. This is an evolutionary interpretation supported by a single fossil, not proof that the embryo behaved exactly like a modern bird or that its posture represents a complete developmental sequence.

- Realistic oviraptor dinosaur egg cast
- Approximately 6" long
- Great addition to prehistoric fossil collections or as a gift for paleontology lovers
Baby Yingliang was not as tightly tucked as a chicken close to hatching, according to National Geographic’s account. The difference matters: the fossil supports a meaningful resemblance, but it does not show that the positions are identical.
Why is the fossil notable—and what does “perfectly preserved” leave out?
Its articulated arrangement makes Baby Yingliang unusually informative: researchers can study the embryo’s posture rather than infer it from a jumble of separate bones. The description “perfectly preserved” appeared in coverage as a reaction to the specimen’s condition, but it should not be read literally. Some skeletal portions are missing, and sediment in the egg makes it difficult to distinguish bone from surrounding material in CT scans. The fossil is exceptional for its completeness, not flawless.

How was Baby Yingliang found?
The egg was discovered in 2000, then rediscovered during sorting in 2015. Preparation exposed the embryo within it. Reporting places the specimen at the Yingliang Stone Nature History Museum. National Geographic’s account and the University of Edinburgh’s summary describe the discovery history.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the same as the dinosaur found sitting on a nest?
No. Baby Yingliang is an embryo inside one fossil egg. A separate 2021 discovery described an adult oviraptorid preserved sitting atop a clutch of eggs that included embryonic remains. The Chinese Academy of Sciences reported that find separately; it is not the Baby Yingliang specimen. The Academy’s announcement covers the adult-and-nest fossil.
