Bachelor of General Studies Designed for Animal Services: What It Can and Cannot Do

A Bachelor of General Studies can be built around animal-services interests when the school allows flexible course selection and prior credits transfer. It is not a standardized animal-services credential, and it does not automatically qualify anyone for veterinary or regulated work.

A Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) can be shaped around animal-services interests, but only when the school lets you choose most of your courses and enough of your existing credits transfer to make the plan practical. There is no standardized “animal services” BGS. The animal focus comes from the courses you select, not from a credential the degree carries. A BGS does not automatically qualify anyone for veterinary school, veterinary technician work, or regulated animal-control positions, so treat it as a flexible framework that needs deliberate planning.

What “designed for animal services” can realistically mean

A general studies degree is built from a mix of disciplines rather than one major. Students who want to work with animals usually assemble that mix around a few themes: animal behavior and welfare, shelter or facility operations, human-animal relationships, and the administrative or nonprofit side of animal organizations. Whether a particular BGS allows that mix depends on three things: how much of the schedule is set by an advisor rather than a fixed curriculum, how many departments can contribute credit, and whether the institution offers animal-related courses you can actually enroll in.

The strongest evidence for animal-specific structure comes from dedicated degrees, not from general studies programs. The official examples below show the difference.

What the official program examples show

BGSU Firelands: an advisor-guided completion degree

Bowling Green State University’s general studies bachelor’s page, updated 2026-08-07, presents the BGS as a completion degree for people who already have substantial college credit. Advisors help build a schedule around the student’s interests and goals, and the program is offered both online and on campus. Applicants need an associate degree or at least 60 college credits. Prior coursework may fulfill requirements, so the transfer evaluation largely determines how long completion takes. The page does not name any animal-services courses or a concentration.

Missouri State University: credits from several departments

Missouri State’s Bachelor of General Studies page says credits from any two or three departments can contribute to the degree. That structure makes it possible to combine, for example, biology or psychology coursework with public administration or communication, but the page does not establish an animal-services track. Its careers page lists public services among the employment areas represented by graduates and describes broad transferable skills. It does not provide an animal-services placement rate.

Texas A&M University–San Antonio: customizable tracks

The university’s Bachelor of General Studies catalog page describes BGS tracks and a self-designed course of study across disciplines. This confirms that some general studies programs allow substantial customization. The cited page does not establish an animal-services track, so any animal-related plan would need to be assembled from available courses and approved by an advisor.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: a dedicated animal-science comparator

Illinois is not a general studies option. Its catalogs are useful because they show what a structured animal-science degree looks like. The 2026–2027 Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences requires 126 hours and includes animal sciences, contemporary animal issues, animal handling, genetics, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, reproduction and growth, career development, and experiential learning. Students choose among three concentrations. Its Science, Pre-Veterinary and Medical concentration emphasizes basic sciences for further graduate or professional study and technical positions.

Animal-services areas that programs name

The Illinois Companion and Equine Science concentration, in its 2026–2027 catalog, describes animal-care fields associated with zoos, kennels, research laboratories, and racing. It names five specific areas that map closely to animal-services work:

  • Humane education
  • Animal advocacy and policy
  • Shelter management
  • Animal care and control
  • Animal care in zoos, kennels, research laboratories, and racing

These are areas a student can aim toward, not job titles that a degree guarantees. A BGS can reach several of them through electives in public administration, nonprofit management, and animal-related science, but it has to be built deliberately.

BGS versus a dedicated animal-science degree

The two models serve different goals. The table compares the published values for the programs cited above. “Not stated” means the program page does not establish that item.

How to build an animal-services plan under a BGS

  1. Get an official transfer-credit evaluation first. Ask the admissions office for a written evaluation of your transcripts, and confirm which courses count toward the BGS and how many total credits remain.
  2. Confirm admission eligibility. Where the program uses the BGSU Firelands model, you need an associate degree or at least 60 college credits.
  3. Ask for a course map across two or three departments. Request a plan that places animal-related coursework (animal behavior, animal welfare, animal science electives) alongside public administration, nonprofit management, or communication courses, and get the advisor’s approval in writing.
  4. Check the residency and upper-division rules. Confirm how many upper-division credits you must earn and how many must be completed at the awarding institution, because these rules can determine whether transfer credits from another college are enough.
  5. Build hands-on experience alongside coursework. Pursue internships, volunteering, or paid shelter and facility work during the degree. Animal-care areas named by programs depend heavily on supervised practice, and a BGS does not supply it.
  6. Check the job you want before you commit. Read current postings for shelter, animal control, or humane-education roles in your area, and note any stated degree, certification, or license requirements.

Choosing between the two paths

  • Shelter management, humane education, or nonprofit animal advocacy: A BGS can work if you already hold substantial credit and can add public administration, nonprofit, or communication courses alongside animal-related electives.
  • Animal care in a structured science setting: A dedicated animal-science degree gives more defined subject depth in animal handling, genetics, and physiology.
  • Veterinary school or a clinical science career: A dedicated pre-veterinary track with basic science coursework is the stronger fit. A BGS alone does not meet those prerequisites.

Where the degree stops

  • A BGS is not a standardized animal-services credential, and no official program page reviewed for this topic presents it as one.
  • Official program pages do not establish that particular animal-services employers recognize general studies degrees, or that any employer requires one.
  • Jurisdiction-specific animal-control credentials and licensing vary by state, county, and city, and were not established by these sources. Check with your local agency.
  • Tuition, total cost, and current course availability are not stated in the program pages cited. Confirm them with each school’s current catalog and bursar office.
  • No placement rate or population statistic for animal-services graduates was found in these official sources.

Requirements change, so verify them with the institution before enrolling.
