How serious is rabies risk in Bali?
The CDC’s Indonesia guidance is country-level, not a Bali-specific risk estimate. It warns that rabid dogs are commonly found in Indonesia and says rabies is fatal if treatment is not given before symptoms begin. For travelers, the practical message is to avoid contact with unfamiliar animals and treat an animal bite or scratch as urgent.

Bali’s local figures show why the issue remains relevant, but they need to be read with their dates and locations. On September 29, 2025, the Bali Provincial Government reported that Jembrana had averaged 550 dog-bite cases per month from January through September 2025 and recorded 96 positive rabies cases during that period. It said 49 of the district’s 51 villages and subdistricts remained red-zone areas. These are Jembrana figures, not Bali-wide totals or 2026 counts. What Bali’s vaccination figures do—and do not—show
The Indonesia Ministry of Agriculture reported on July 26, 2025 that 365,017 dogs had been vaccinated, an estimated 64.5% of the rabies-transmitting animal population, with 200,720 vaccine doses in stock. The ministry also said it was harmonizing population estimates and that a trial estimate suggested Bali may have more dogs than earlier estimates. What officials described for 2026
At a coordination meeting on June 25, 2026, Bali veterinary authorities described village-based mass vaccination focused on active red-zone villages, village vaccination posts led by veterinarians, and door-to-door vaccination as a principal method for raising coverage. They described campaign windows in April–June and September–October. Should you get a rabies vaccine before travelling?
Pre-exposure vaccination is a decision to make with a healthcare provider, based on your activities and how likely you are to have prompt access to safe post-exposure treatment. CDC advises travelers to discuss their exposure risk and whether pre-exposure vaccination is appropriate, and recommends checking health needs at least a month before travel. Pre-exposure vaccination does not make an animal bite safe to ignore. If an exposure occurs, seek medical care immediately so a clinician can assess the wound and whether post-exposure treatment is needed.

How to reduce your chance of exposure
- Do not touch, feed or approach unfamiliar dogs, cats or other animals. The CDC specifically calls out dogs, bats and monkeys for particular care.
- Keep animal saliva away from your eyes, mouth and open wounds.
- Do not try to decide whether an animal is rabid based on its appearance or behavior; seek professional advice after a potential exposure.
- Plan how you would reach medical care. CDC advises reviewing health coverage and considering medical evacuation insurance, while noting that rabies treatment may not be available in some countries. What to do after an animal bite, scratch or lick
- Wash a bite or scratch immediately. CDC’s instruction is: “Wash the wound with soap and clean water.”
- Get medical attention right away. CDC says to go to a doctor immediately after an animal bite or scratch and also advises immediate care after a potentially risky lick by a wild or unfamiliar animal.
- Follow a clinician’s advice about treatment. Do not wait for symptoms, and do not delay care while trying to identify or locate the animal. Rabies is fatal if untreated before symptoms start. CDC Indonesia traveler guidance.
