A cooler is suitable bear-resistant storage only if the exact model is on the current Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) certified-products list and the land manager for your campground permits it there. Ordinary coolers, locking totes, and dry bags are not bear-proof. Before packing, check the campground’s rules, then confirm the product model and any required way of securing it.
How to choose food storage for a bear-country car-camping trip
- Check the rules for your exact campground or camping area. Find out whether it provides a food locker, whether vehicle storage is allowed, and whether requirements differ between frontcountry campgrounds and backcountry sites.
- Check the exact product model. Search the current IGBC certified-products list. A general “bear-proof” claim, cooler brand, or added lock does not establish that a product is certified.
- Follow the destination’s instructions. The IGBC notes that local agencies decide which products meet their rules. Check whether the container needs particular hardware or must be secured in a specific way.
- Make sure everything fits. Plan for all food and other items the local rules treat as attractants, not just meals. A container that is too small does not make the overflow safe.
Where a campground supplies a food locker, using it may be the simplest option. A listed cooler or canister is appropriate only where local rules allow it. Do not assume that permission in one park applies elsewhere.

What counts as a bear-resistant cooler or food container?
Certification is specific to the product model, and local acceptance is specific to the place and type of camping. The National Park Service’s Denali bear-resistant food-container page lists Riley Stove Company’s “Insulated Cooler” as an approved option, reflecting the IGBC product list as of April 2026. That does not establish that the cooler is accepted at another campground.

That is Noatak’s explanation, not a substitute for checking current IGBC criteria or local rules. A resistant container also does not keep bears from smelling food inside it.

Why an ordinary cooler is not bear-proof
Ordinary coolers can release food odors, and a bear may open or knock one over. A cooler lock, sealed tote, or dry bag should not be treated as certified protection unless the exact product is on the recognized list and the destination accepts it.
Food storage rules can extend beyond food itself. Depending on the location, they may cover beverages, garbage, scented personal-care products, food-contaminated cookware, and cooking or storage equipment. In North Cascades, for example, the NPS says coolers and ice chests count as food items unless completely empty and free of food particles. Follow the local list of attractants, and keep a bear-resistant container away from where you sleep because it does not conceal food odors.

How rules differ by destination
| Destination | What the cited park guidance says | What to check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Denali National Park & Preserve | The park’s page, updated May 5, 2026, says overnight campers in Units 1–21 and 23–43 must store food, garbage, and other scented items in a bear-resistant food container; it recommends containers in other units. Its listed options include Riley Stove Company’s Insulated Cooler. | Confirm your unit, the current approved options, and the park’s current requirements on the Denali BRFC page. |
| Yellowstone National Park | IGBC-approved hard-sided coolers may be used for backcountry food storage when secured as instructed. They are not approved for frontcountry campground food storage. Food and attractants that do not fit must be secured by hanging or in an NPS food locker. | Check whether you are camping in the frontcountry or backcountry and follow the current Yellowstone backcountry safety guidance. |
| Noatak National Preserve | The park page says food, beverages, scented items, garbage, and cooking or storage equipment must be secured in a bear-resistant container under its described rule. Such a container prevents access, not scent. | Review the current Noatak container guidance and confirm what applies to your trip. |
| North Cascades National Park | Canisters are required at named backcountry camps and zones. Elsewhere, the page gives separate bear-hang guidance where allowed, including storage at least 100 feet from sleeping areas, and warns against storing food in ordinary coolers. | Check whether your site is in a required-canister area and follow the current North Cascades food-storage requirements. |
These park examples are not a nationwide rule. Requirements can vary by campground, land manager, and frontcountry or backcountry setting.

What to secure, and where to keep it
- Store food and every other attractant listed by the local land manager; do not leave overflow in an ordinary cooler or vehicle unless the rules explicitly allow that storage method.
- Use a supplied food locker when the campground requires or provides one, or use a certified container only where it is permitted.
- Follow the specified securing method, whether that means particular hardware, a food locker, or—where expressly allowed—a bear hang.
- Keep food storage away from the sleeping area when the local instructions require it. A resistant container blocks access, not the smell of its contents.
- Check the rules again close to departure; product lists and site requirements can change.
