If your dog will not tolerate brushing, consider a size-appropriate dental chew, a purpose-designed dental diet, or a food powder—but check the exact product’s Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) listing and claims. Persistent bad breath or trouble eating calls for a veterinary exam, not just another home-care product.
Which alternative should you choose?
Choose the routine you can use consistently and that suits your dog. Brushing mechanically cleans the teeth; other options offer different formats and product-specific claims. The VOHC list includes products with claims for plaque, tartar (calculus), or both, so check the exact product rather than assuming every item in a category does the same thing.
| Option | VOHC-listed example and claim | Best fit and consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Toothbrushing | HealthyMouth Toothpaste/Brush Kit Combination for Dogs — plaque claim | A controllable daily routine; use supplies made for pets and introduce brushing gradually. |
| Dental chew | Canine Greenies — plaque and tartar claims; OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews — tartar claim | For a dog that chews safely. Match the chew to body weight and supervise. |
| Dental diet | VOHC lists purpose-designed diets; individual claims and availability vary. | May suit dogs whose owners cannot brush, but confirm nutritional suitability with your veterinarian. Some options are veterinary-only. |
| Powder added to food | ProDen PlaqueOff Powder — plaque and tartar claims | A food-delivered option for owners who prefer not to add a product to water. |
VOHC’s accepted-products list is dynamic. Confirm the exact product and its current claim before buying. VOHC reviews data submitted by companies from trials conducted under its protocols; it does not conduct the product tests itself. Its Seal concerns plaque, tartar, or both, depending on the product.
Daily brushing: the strongest home-care foundation
VOHC calls brushing “the gold standard,” and AAHA says daily brushing is the best way to reduce plaque accumulation. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for pets; AAHA warns against human toothpaste. A kit can make it easier to get the appropriate supplies, but it is a tool for a routine, not a substitute for veterinary care.

#1 Best Overall
- FRESH PET BREATH – Finally say good-bye to dog and cat bad breath with our fast-acting pet bad breath treatment for dogs and cats. It’s the best, quick & easy cat & dog breath freshener.
- CLEAN TEETH AND GUMS – The easiest way to clean your pet's teeth! Our veterinarian recommended cat and dog oral care water additive helps fight plaque and tartar for healthy teeth and gums.
- SKIP THE BRUSHING – That’s right, no more wrestling with pet toothpaste and toothbrushes; just add a capful of our cat and dog dental care liquid to their water bowl each day – it’s that easy!
- PICKY PET APPROVED – We don't mask with mint or tea tree that can be harmful to dogs and cats. Our Pet Dental Water Additive is odorless and tasteless, so they don't even know it's there.
- IT WORKS – Trusted by pet parents, our cat and dog dental water additive is made in the U.S.A. with only the highest quality ingredients, and is a pet bad breath eliminator that actually works.
- Start with the supplies: choose a dog toothbrush and pet toothpaste. The HealthyMouth Toothpaste/Brush Kit Combination for Dogs is one VOHC-listed example with a plaque claim.
- Build tolerance gradually: let your dog become comfortable with handling around the muzzle before attempting a full brushing. Keep early sessions short and calm.
- Brush regularly: aim for daily oral hygiene. VOHC notes that plaque and tartar accumulate fastest on the cheek-facing surfaces of the upper teeth; ask your veterinarian whether its standardized brushing technique is suitable for your dog.
Dental chews: a practical option for dogs that chew safely
Chews can be easier to fit into a routine than brushing, but they are not interchangeable with brushing and their accepted claims differ. For example, the VOHC list gives Canine Greenies plaque and tartar claims, while OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews carry a tartar claim. Check the current listing for the exact product you are considering.
- Choose the size intended for your dog’s body weight.
- Stay with your dog while it chews to reduce the risk of obstruction.
- Consider whether your dog chews calmly and safely; a chew is not a good fit for every dog.
Dental diets: check nutrition and access first
AAHA describes purpose-designed dental diets as useful when an owner cannot or will not brush. VOHC lists dental diets with product-specific claims, and some are veterinary-only. Ask your veterinarian whether a particular diet fits your dog’s nutritional needs before replacing or changing a complete food.

- HELPS REDUCE PLAQUE AND TARTAR DAILY: Baking soda enhanced formula is designed to help reduce plaque formation and slow tartar buildup on tooth surfaces over time when used consistently in a fresh water bowl every day.
- SUPPORTS TEETH, GUMS, AND ENAMEL: Calcium and vitamins in the formula support gum tissue health and tooth enamel as structural building blocks, extending the dental benefit beyond basic breath freshening water additives.
- SUITABLE FOR MULTI-DOG HOUSEHOLDS: Odorless, flavorless formula works in a shared water bowl without flavor conflicts, making it practical for homes with multiple adult dogs who drink from the same water source daily.
Food powder and other product formats
Powder added to food
ProDen PlaqueOff Powder is listed by VOHC with plaque and tartar claims. It is a food-delivered alternative for someone who does not want to alter the water. The listing does not establish that it works better than brushing or than another accepted product.
Topical products, brushes, and wipes
The VOHC list also includes oral gels, sprays, toothpaste, brushes, and wipes. These may offer a format your dog tolerates more readily, but acceptance and claims are product-specific. Verify the current listing and label rather than relying on a category-wide assumption.

When bad breath needs a veterinary check
Bad breath can be an early sign of dental disease. AAHA advises arranging a dental exam for bad breath, red gums, drooling, or difficulty eating. A home-care product cannot diagnose the cause or replace an examination. AAHA reported in 2024 that “by age three, most dogs and cats already have some form of periodontal disease”; this statistic refers to dogs and cats together, not dogs alone.
For more detail, see the VOHC accepted-products list, VOHC’s prevention guidance, and AAHA’s 2019 nutrition guideline and 2024 pet dental-care guidance.
