The best balcony barrier for a cat is one that fits the whole opening, blocks the routes your cat could use to climb or squeeze out, and can be securely installed without violating your lease or building rules. For many balconies, that means a purpose-made cat net; unusual layouts or a need for a rigid structure may call for a custom barrier or professional enclosure. No barrier makes an unattended cat risk-free.
Choose the barrier for your balcony and your cat
Start by deciding whether you need to screen the railing or enclose the balcony as an outdoor space. A railing screen may leave open routes at the sides or above; an enclosure must account for the top as well as the railing, corners, and other gaps. The Cat Protection Society of NSW says the right containment depends on both the home and the cat’s ability to escape. Its cat-proof fencing and enclosures guide recommends supervising a cat in a new enclosure to see whether it can get out.
Consider your cat’s behavior as well as the shape of the balcony. A determined climber, a cat that squeezes into narrow gaps, or one that pushes at loose material may need a different design from a cat that stays low. Assess the complete route from balcony floor to any open edge, not just the most visible section of railing.

What to check in a cat safety net
Mesh size is one part of fit: it should be appropriate for your cat and should not create a route through which the cat can pass. Ferplast’s CAT NET product page describes UV-resistant nylon with 3 × 3 cm mesh, metal hooks, anchoring screws, and sizes from XS through XL. Those are specifications for that product, not a guarantee that it will suit every cat or balcony. Check the manufacturer’s current product details and measure the opening against the actual net dimensions before buying.
Ferplast advises measuring from the balcony’s upper edge to the ceiling. Its product guidance also notes that nylon can expand or shrink with temperature changes, so consider the conditions where the net will be used and follow the current installation instructions. Confirm whether the product covers the sides and top you need; a net sold for a particular size does not by itself establish complete coverage on your balcony.

Plan coverage and mounting before installation
Draw or measure the full area that needs to be closed, including railing gaps, side returns, corners, and any opening above the barrier. Identify what each edge can attach to and whether the proposed attachment will remain secure on that surface. Avoid assuming that a net, panel, or set of fixings will work across different balcony constructions.
One DIY system described by Catnetting USA uses drilled brackets, tensioned stainless wire, and edging rope. This is that supplier’s installation approach, not a universal method. Review the supplier’s balcony netting information and confirm hardware compatibility and installation requirements for your own structure. The supplier advises renters to get landlord or strata sign-off before drilling.

Before modifying the property, check your lease and building requirements. The Cat Protection Society of NSW says renters need the owner’s permission for property modifications; building or strata rules may also apply. Requirements vary by location and property, so get approval for the specific mounting method rather than assuming a non-permanent-looking installation is allowed.
When a custom or professional solution makes sense
A custom rigid barrier may be worth investigating when a standard net cannot cover an unusual opening or when you specifically want a measured, rigid structure. BalconyCat describes custom-cut welded steel mesh for balcony railings and window openings, along with a window enclosure for casement windows. These are vendor descriptions; ask about dimensions, mounting, coverage, current availability, and any written performance documentation before relying on the product for your layout. If measuring and installation are the main obstacles, a local enclosure service may help with design, a DIY kit, or a custom build. The Cat Protection Society of NSW names CatMax, SecureaKat, Sydney Cat Enclosures, and CatNets as examples of Australian providers offering some combination of these services. Check each provider’s current service area, scope, and availability; the list is not a guarantee that a particular service operates near you.

Introduce the enclosure under supervision and watch how your cat interacts with it, particularly at corners, joins, and edges. Ferplast’s product guidance says, “In any case, never leave your cat unattended, even when the net is installed.” Supervision is important because a cat may reveal a weakness in the layout or installation that is not obvious when the balcony is empty.

- Check that the barrier covers every route out, including above and around the sides where relevant.
- Look for loose edges, gaps, damaged netting, or fixings that have shifted.
- Observe whether your cat climbs, pushes, or tests the barrier, and reassess the design if it can reach an escape route.
- Follow the product maker’s maintenance and installation guidance.
