An extractor sprays cleaning solution into carpet and suctions dirty water back out. For broad, whole-room cleaning, Consumer Analysis named the BISSELL Big Green Machine its best carpet cleaner for pets among the models it tested. For accidents on stairs, upholstery or small areas, BISSELL recommends its portable Little Green Max Pet. Those recommendations come from different kinds of evidence: Consumer Analysis reports comparative testing, while BISSELL’s portable-cleaner advice is manufacturer guidance.
For dog urine in particular, BISSELL advises against steam cleaning: its published guidance says heat can set proteins and odor more permanently into rug fibers. Check the rug’s care label and the appliance manual before using any water-based cleaner.
Which type of carpet cleaner suits pet messes?
Match the machine to the area you need to clean. Full-size upright extractors are designed for repeated or broad carpet cleaning; portable spot extractors are easier to target at isolated accidents, stairs and upholstery. Neither size makes every rug suitable for wet cleaning, and a machine’s pet branding alone does not establish how well it handles a particular stain.
- Choose a full-size upright if you routinely clean carpeted rooms or need to treat a larger area.
- Choose a portable extractor if your main need is spot cleaning, stairs or upholstery.
- Check performance beyond urine. Consumer Analysis found that results differed between coyote urine and peanut butter, its test approximation for oily or other messes; some strong urine performers did less well on peanut butter.
Consumer Analysis’s pet-cleaner comparison and stain protocol are described in its pet-cleaner test and test-method page. Its results are findings from one publisher’s defined test, not a guarantee for every pet accident, carpet or home.

Why the ProHeat specifications need checking
Ideal Home’s 2026 listing for its reviewed UK version gives a weight of 7.94 kg and clean- and dirty-water capacities of 3.7 L each; it reports 82 dB as tested. Which? lists model 20666 with a weight of 12.5 kg, a 3.7 L clean-water tank and a 4.5 L dirty-water capacity, as well as a six-year warranty. These listings are not interchangeable specifications for one universal model. Confirm the model number and market with the retailer and manufacturer. See Which?’s comparison.

How to clean dog urine with an extractor
Use this approach only when the rug or carpet is suitable for water-based cleaning. BISSELL’s instructions are manufacturer guidance; the appliance’s own manual and the rug’s care label also matter.
- Blot fresh urine. Press with an absorbent cloth rather than rubbing, which can spread the mess.
- Check the care label. BISSELL advises proceeding with water-based cleaning for rugs marked W or WS, and consulting a professional for labels marked S or X.
- Use a compatible formula. Follow the cleaner’s manual for solution type and dilution. BISSELL recommends PET PRO OXY with the Little Green Max Pet; that does not establish compatibility with every machine.
- Treat beyond the visible spot. BISSELL’s method applies solution to an area wider than the visible stain, then scrubs.
- Extract thoroughly. Make passes to recover the dirty water, then finish with a suction-only pass. BISSELL says to continue extracting until the recovered water runs clear.
- Reassess after cleaning. Older or deeper contamination can take repeated cleaning. If urine reached the rug pad or floor, a surface-only clean may not resolve the odor.
BISSELL explains its urine-cleaning method and rug-label advice in its dog-urine rug-cleaning guide. It notes that a spray bottle alone cannot recover dissolved residue from inside rug fibers; that is the manufacturer’s explanation for the role of extraction.

Why a conventional steam cleaner is not the same thing
“Carpet steam cleaner” is a common search phrase, but many machines sold as carpet cleaners, carpet washers or shampooers are extractors. They apply cleaning solution and recover dirty water; they are not necessarily steam appliances. For dog-urine stains, BISSELL’s published guidance states: “Steam cleaners are not recommended for dog urine stains. Heat can set the proteins, and therefore the odor, more permanently into rug fibers, making it harder to remove.” This is BISSELL’s advice, not a universal independent test finding. Follow the care instructions for the carpet or rug as well as the machine’s manual.
What to compare before buying
Look beyond the word “pet” on a product name. A useful comparison considers both cleaning results and the work involved in using and maintaining the machine.

- Stain performance: Look for evidence on urine as well as other likely messes. Test results on one stain do not predict results on all soils.
- Water recovery and drying: Extraction affects how much moisture remains in the carpet. Consumer Analysis reported that some Bissell models used more water, cleaned certain oily stains well, but left carpet wetter.
- Tank capacity and refill frequency: Larger tanks can reduce interruptions, but capacity alone does not show how much area you can clean per fill.
- Handling and storage: Consider weight, maneuverability, corded power, storage footprint and the effort of carrying a full tank.
- Tools and surfaces: Check whether the package includes the attachments you need for stairs, upholstery or concentrated spots.
- Maintenance and ongoing cost: Review how the machine is cleaned after use and which solutions it permits, along with refill costs in your market.
- Price and exact version: Prices change, and model specifications can vary by market. Verify the current listing and model number where you plan to buy.

Formula compatibility is model-specific. BISSELL pairs the Little Green Max Pet with PET PRO OXY in its urine-cleaning guide and lists its Professional Pet Stain and Odor Removing Formula, model 77X7, for carpet, high-traffic areas, spots, upholstery and fabric. Check your own manual rather than assuming either formula suits another machine.

Rug Doctor’s 2024 manual for its portable pet spot cleaner describes Pure Power Pet Stain & Odor formula and advises using Rug Doctor solutions in that machine, warning that other solutions may harm it and void the warranty.
