There is no established need for an Egyptian Mau–specific food. Choose a complete cat food appropriate for your Mau’s life stage and health, then tailor portions to age, activity, ideal weight, and body condition. Wet and dry foods can both be suitable; the right choice depends on your cat’s needs and preferences.
Does an Egyptian Mau need breed-specific cat food?
No breed-specific formula or nutrient profile has been established as necessary for Egyptian Maus. PetMD’s breed-care guidance recommends commercial wet or dry food that meets nutritional recommendations for the cat’s life stage, but it does not identify a proven best brand or a special Mau diet: PetMD’s Egyptian Mau cat care guide.
The breed is described as active and intelligent, but that alone does not establish that every Mau needs extra protein, grain-free food, raw food, supplements, or a particular breed-formula product. Choose based on nutritional adequacy and your individual cat, not a breed label.
How to choose a suitable food
Match the food to life stage
Look for food labeled for cats and appropriate to the cat’s life stage: growth, adult maintenance, gestation or lactation, or all life stages where applicable. AAFCO advises checking the package’s nutritional adequacy statement to see whether the food is intended to be complete and balanced for that life stage. “Complete” indicates that required nutrients are included; “balanced” indicates they are present in appropriate proportions. Treats and foods labeled for supplemental or intermittent feeding should not be mistaken for a complete daily diet.
Read the adequacy statement, calories, and feeding directions
Check the label’s adequacy statement and calorie content, then use the feeding directions as a starting point. Those directions are guidelines, not a fixed prescription: the amount your cat needs depends on the food’s calorie density and the cat’s age, activity, health, and body condition. AAFCO does not approve individual foods; as it puts it, “In short, AAFCO does not approve, certify or otherwise endorse pet foods.”

Consider your cat’s health and preferences
Compare options by life-stage adequacy, calories per can or cup, whether your cat readily eats the food, and any health needs identified by a veterinarian. Availability and price also matter for a diet you can provide consistently. If your cat has a medical problem or you suspect a food reaction, ask a veterinarian before switching to a therapeutic diet, starting an elimination plan, or adding supplements.
How much should an Egyptian Mau eat?
There is no universal portion or calorie target for the breed. Start with the package directions, then adjust the amount to maintain your cat’s desired weight and body condition. Weigh your cat regularly and watch for changes in body shape; if your Mau is gaining or losing weight, or has a health condition, consult a veterinarian about an appropriate daily intake.

PetMD notes that a Mau’s daily amount depends on activity and that a veterinarian can help estimate calorie needs using age and ideal weight. The 2021 AAFP-AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines likewise explain: “Energy and nutrient needs vary with life stage, sterilization status and activity, and so general feeding recommendations provide only a starting point.”
Wet food or dry food: which is better?
Either format can be appropriate when it is nutritionally complete for your cat’s life stage and fits their health needs. There is no blanket rule that every Egyptian Mau should eat wet food or dry food. Consider calorie content, your cat’s acceptance, convenience, and veterinary advice when choosing.

Canned food can help provide water when increased water intake is desirable, but that does not mean every cat must eat wet food. Water bowls or fountains are other ways to make water available. If hydration is a concern, discuss your cat’s needs with a veterinarian. The 2021 AAFP-AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines discuss water provision, canned food, and feeding enrichment.

PetMD suggests these activities for the active, intelligent Mau; the feline life-stage guidelines also describe food puzzles as foraging devices. They may add activity and variety to feeding, but they are not a breed-specific medical requirement or a treatment for obesity.

If you use a puzzle, put a measured portion of your cat’s usual daily ration in it rather than adding extra food. Multiple small meals may also suit some cats. Make sure your cat can access enough food and monitor intake, especially when introducing a new feeder.
When to ask a veterinarian about food
Get veterinary guidance before making a major diet change if your cat is ill, has a suspected food reaction, needs to lose weight, or has another special dietary need. A veterinarian can help set an appropriate target based on the cat’s health, ideal weight, and activity, and advise whether a therapeutic food is warranted. AAFCO also directs owners to seek veterinary care for sick pets.
