The best cat food for shedding is a complete-and-balanced food that fits your cat’s life stage and health needs—not a product that promises to stop hair loss. Good nutrition supports skin and coat, but excessive or patchy shedding can signal a problem that food alone will not fix.
What food should you choose for a cat that sheds?
Start with the nutritional adequacy statement on the label. It identifies the life stage the food is formulated to support, such as growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages. Choose a food appropriate for your cat’s age and health status, then consider body condition, tolerance, and preference. Wet, dry, or mixed feeding can all work once nutritional adequacy is established.

A food marketed for skin and coat support is a reasonable category to compare, but that claim does not prove it will reduce shedding. The available evidence does not establish a particular brand as best or quantify how much any food reduces loose hair. Prioritize a complete-and-balanced cat food and a good fit for your individual cat over “premium” language, ingredient-list order, price, or a single nutrient claim. VCA’s guidance on nutrition and skin in cats and Cornell’s guide to feeding cats explain the roles of nutrition and adequacy statements.

No food is shown to stop shedding in every cat. Cats naturally lose hair seasonally or in small amounts throughout the year, and patterns vary. Adequate, digestible nutrition can support healthy skin and coat, but shedding can also be affected by stress, parasites, allergies, and illness. A diet change is not a substitute for investigating those causes.

EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fatty acids, may help support the skin barrier and modulate inflammation. Whether a cat needs additional fatty acids depends on the cat and its current diet; a skin-and-coat label or a supplement is not a guarantee of less shedding. VCA explains the connection between nutrition, skin, and cats.
When to ask a veterinarian about shedding
Arrange a veterinary assessment if shedding is persistent or excessive, or if you notice bald patches, itching, skin changes, or a coat that has changed noticeably. Possible causes include parasites, infections, allergies or food hypersensitivity, stress, and other illness. Metabolic problems such as hyperthyroidism, digestive disease, arthritis, or difficulty grooming because of obesity can also affect coat condition. The right response depends on the cause, not just the amount of hair in the home.

A veterinarian may consider a therapeutic or hypoallergenic diet for selected skin or food-related problems. These diets do not address every cause and should be used with veterinary guidance. Cornell’s overview of feline skin disorders describes several possible causes and the limits of dietary approaches.
Should you give a shedding cat supplements?
Do not add fatty acids or other supplements arbitrarily. Some cats may benefit from additional fatty acids, but they are not completely effective for every skin problem, and too much can have adverse effects. Supplementing a complete-and-balanced diet can also create risks because some nutrients can be harmful at high levels. Ask your veterinarian whether a supplement is appropriate, which product to use, and how much to give. See VCA’s nutrition and skin guidance, Cornell’s discussion of skin disorders, and WSAVA’s nutrition FAQs and myths.

How grooming can help manage loose fur
Regular grooming helps keep a cat’s coat clean and free of tangles, and a brush or comb suited to the coat can collect loose hair before it spreads around the home. Grooming can help manage fur, but it cannot diagnose or treat an underlying skin or health problem. If grooming reveals irritated skin, bald spots, or discomfort, contact your veterinarian. VCA’s guide to healthy feline coats and skin covers normal shedding and coat care.
