The best cat litter for multiple cats depends on what your cats will use and what your household most needs: odor control, easy scooping, less dust or tracking, or lighter bags. A 2026 Cats.com guide selected nine options across different materials and uses, but its picks are that publisher’s recommendations—not a universal ranking or a controlled comparison of every litter in identical homes. If your cats already accept a particular texture, start there; then compare unscented clumping choices against your cleanup needs.
How to choose litter for a multi-cat household
Compare litter by the job it needs to do, not by the words “multi-cat” on the package. Clumping, odor management and tracking are useful criteria; PetMD also recommends considering low-dust formulas for cats or people with asthma or sensitivities. A litter’s texture and scent matter too: cats may reject a product that is otherwise convenient for their people.

- Start with acceptance: Favor a texture your cats already use or are likely to tolerate. An older 2011 Vetlearn/Vetstreet handout says many cats prefer unscented scoopable litter and recommends mixing gradually when changing products. Treat that as general behavior guidance, not a current product standard.
- Match the format to cleanup: Clumping litter supports scooping, while pellets or crystals may behave differently in a box and with a scoop. Check the product’s specific instructions.
- Separate claims from guarantees: Dust, tracking and odor-control descriptions are product or editorial claims, not a promise of the same result in every home. Avoid treating “dust-free” or a stated odor-control duration as universal proof.
- Check compatibility before using an automatic box: Follow the appliance maker’s current litter requirements, particularly for pellets, lightweight products and non-clumping formats.
- Compare like with like: Material, scent and bag size vary. Retail prices and ratings are snapshots, so check the exact formula and package at purchase rather than relying on an old comparison.

The following options reflect categories in Cats.com’s guide, updated September 7, 2026. Cats.com says it purchased some products and tested litters at home for at least ten days; those are its methods and judgments, not tests conducted for this article. The guide does not establish a controlled, like-for-like comparison across all nine products.

Cats.com’s category labels are useful for narrowing a shortlist, not proof that one product is best for every home.
How to narrow the shortlist
If you want an unscented clumping starting point
Compare Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay with the exact unscented variant of another clumping litter you are considering. Familiar clay texture may make the transition simpler for cats already using clay; check dust, handling weight and the package’s actual scent and formula before buying.

If you use an automatic litter box
GreatLitter is Cats.com’s automatic-box pick, but do not treat that designation as universal compatibility. Check the maker’s current guidance for your specific appliance before switching, especially if considering a pellet, unusually light or non-clumping product.

- Keep the familiar litter available. Do not abruptly remove a substrate your cats are reliably using when you can avoid it.
- Mix gradually. The 2011 Vetlearn/Vetstreet handout recommends gradual mixing when changing litter. It does not specify a universal transition schedule, so adjust to your cats’ response rather than forcing a fixed timetable.
- Watch for changes in use. If a cat avoids the box or has persistent litter-box problems, contact a veterinarian instead of assuming the issue is just the new litter.
Retail listings also show why the label “multi-cat” is not enough to compare products: available formats include clay, corn, walnut and pellets. Chewy’s listing is a retail snapshot, not a stable price or availability guarantee. Purina’s official Tidy Cats clumping-litter catalog is another example of a product range with clumping and multi-cat variants; check the current listing for the exact item.
