What makes a cat tree easier to use with age-related mobility changes?
A route that works going up and down
Assess each step between the floor and the resting spot, including the route down. A cat may manage an upward climb but hesitate or struggle to descend. Staggered platforms, small steps, or a ramp can reduce the need for a single large jump. Grip and a secure landing
International Cat Care recommends nonslip coverings on stairs and ramps. Check the surface underfoot as well as the floor where the cat will step off: a slippery approach or landing can undermine an otherwise accessible route. Make sure ramps and platforms do not shift during use.
Stable construction and safe placement
Check whether the assembled tree rocks, especially when pressure is applied to upper levels. Follow the manufacturer’s anchoring instructions, and confirm that the intended wall and location can support the required installation. Place the tree where your cat can reach it without an awkward approach or slippery landing.

Platforms sized for the cat
Consider whether your cat can step onto each platform, turn around, and settle comfortably. Compare the usable platform or bed dimensions with your cat’s size; total tree height does not tell you whether a particular resting surface is suitable.
Weight limits, cleaning, and household use
Check the weight limit for the specific platform as well as the structure, and account for whether more than one cat will use it. Review what can be removed and washed, and weigh upkeep considerations such as reported shedding against the layout and access your cat needs.

- Map your cat’s route. Identify the preferred resting or viewing spot and look for a continuous way up and down using small steps, staggered platforms, or a ramp.
- Compare the actual dimensions. Check platform size, step spacing, ramp length, overall footprint, and landing space against your cat and room.

When climbing changes call for a veterinary conversation
A cat tree can make a home easier to navigate, but it cannot diagnose or treat joint pain.
