There is no single best dog bed for every dog. The right choice depends on how your dog sleeps, the bed’s usable inner space, the support and entry height your dog needs, and whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. Use those factors to compare Australian options rather than relying on a universal “best” label.
How to choose a dog bed
- Measure for usable space. Check the sleeping area inside the bed, not only its outside dimensions. Bunnings pets buyer Ashlee Tanner advises: “For optimum comfort, make sure you note the inner measurements of the bed and not just the main/outer space.” Petbarn explains how to measure and recommends sizing up when a dog falls between sizes or is still growing: Petbarn’s dog-bed sizing guide.
- Match the shape to the way your dog rests. Notice whether your dog curls up, burrows, or stretches out. Bolster and basket styles may suit curlers and burrowers; a flat cushion or mattress gives a sprawler more room. These are useful starting points, not guarantees of preference. - Consider support and access separately. Petbarn describes high-density memory-foam orthopedic beds as an option for large or senior dogs that need support, and suggests considering a lower entry for older dogs. “Orthopedic” is a product category, not proof that a bed treats arthritis or another condition. For a dog with pain or mobility problems, ask a veterinarian about appropriate care.
- Account for heat and location. A raised bed lets air move beneath the sleeping surface, which may be useful in warm conditions. For outdoor use, consider water-resistant materials and ease of cleaning, but choose for the actual exposure and provide suitable shelter. Which type of dog bed may suit your dog?

- Sleep Republic dog bed and Kazoo options: Better Homes & Gardens Australia included these in its 2025 selection and discussed features such as removable machine-washable covers and memory-foam support. Its article says value depends on the dog’s size, age, and needs; it is an editorial selection, not evidence of an independent comparative test.
- Kazoo Daydream Dog Bed: Pet Circle’s veterinarian-authored guide describes this as an outdoor option, citing an elevated platform, airflow, waterproof fabric, cleaning, and replacement-cover options. Treat these as claims in Pet Circle’s product description, not independent durability-test findings.
- Snooza and other named models: Pet Care Community lists Snooza The Snug Dog Bed, Snooza The Nest Dog Bed, Kazoo Country Classic Mattress Bed, and Snooza Cooling Comfort Orthobed, among others. It reports that staff bought and tested 11 beds with two dogs for at least four weeks, assessing factors including support, washability, summer durability, sizing, non-slip performance, and value. Its top pick is The Snug, with The Nest described as a more structured orthopedic option. These are that publisher’s test claims and conclusions; check current availability and price before relying on them.
Questions to ask before buying
- Does the inner sleeping area fit your dog in its usual sleeping position?
- Will the shape accommodate curling, burrowing, or stretching?
- Can your dog get onto and off the bed comfortably?
- Will the materials and airflow suit the room, climate, or outdoor location?
- Can you wash the cover or components according to the care instructions?
- Are replacement covers available if that matters to you?
Common questions about dog beds
What size of bed does my dog need?
Measure your dog and compare that measurement with the bed’s inner sleeping area, rather than its outside dimensions. If your dog is between sizes or still growing, Petbarn recommends sizing up. Also account for sleeping posture: a dog that stretches out needs more usable length and width than one that curls into a compact shape.

Do dogs prefer round beds?
There is no established universal preference. A round bolster or basket may suit a dog that curls or likes to burrow, while a flat bed can provide more room for a dog that sprawls. Let your dog’s observed sleeping posture guide the choice.
Why does my dog prefer the floor to its bed?
A dog choosing the floor does not by itself establish why it avoids a bed. Check whether the bed is too small, too warm, difficult to enter, or unlike the surface and sleeping position your dog prefers. Try observing where and how your dog settles before changing the bed; consult a veterinarian if the change in resting habits is sudden or comes with signs of discomfort.

Can a dog bed help with arthritis?
A bed marketed as orthopedic may offer features intended to provide support, but the product label does not establish that it treats arthritis. Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s condition and suitable comfort or mobility measures.
