The best dog DNA test depends on what you want to learn. For breed mix, ancestry, traits, and relatives, compare breed-focused kits; if you also want genetic health screening, choose a health-inclusive tier. Embark and Wisdom Panel both offer multiple options, but their feature and accuracy figures are provider claims—not independent proof that one test is more accurate than the other.
Which dog DNA test should you choose?
Start with your main question, then check that the specific kit tier includes the feature you need. A breed-focused kit and a health-inclusive kit are different purchases, even when they come from the same provider.
- Breed mix and ancestry: Compare breed coverage, ancestry features, and whether the kit also offers relative matching.
- Genetic health screening: Choose a tier that includes health screening. Treat results as genetic information to discuss with your veterinarian, not as a diagnosis or a complete picture of your dog’s health.
- A broader profile: Compare tiers that combine breed, health, traits, and relatives, and check the exact inclusions before ordering.
How Embark and Wisdom Panel compare
The table summarizes features each company describes on its current product pages. Breed, condition, and trait counts are provider-reported; they are not independent measures of test accuracy.
| Provider and tier | What the provider lists | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| Embark Breed ID | Breed identification; consult Embark’s current comparison page for the tier’s listed features. | Embark’s product page describes a mail-in cheek-swab kit and estimates 2–4 weeks for results. Check the live page for current tier details. |
| Embark Breed + Health | Embark lists 400+ breeds, 270+ health conditions, and 55 physical traits for this test. It also describes breed, traits, relatives, and health screening. | Embark claims 99% breed accuracy. That figure is the company’s claim, not an independently established head-to-head result. |
| Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery | Part of Wisdom Panel’s current range, which advertises 430+ breeds and ancestry and relative-finder features across its offerings. | Check the current tier page for the features included in Breed Discovery. |
| Wisdom Panel Essential | A current tier in Wisdom Panel’s range; health screening varies by tier. | Confirm the exact health and other features on the product page before choosing. |
| Wisdom Panel Premium | Includes health screening; Wisdom Panel lists access to a veterinary genetics specialist for at-risk results. | The page gives inconsistent totals for Premium health tests—265+ in its overview and 270+ in a later section—so no single total is stated here. |

What breed and ancestry results can—and cannot—tell you
A provider compares your dog’s DNA sample with its reference data using its own markers and methods to estimate breed composition. Since companies may use different reference data and algorithms, their estimates can differ. Embark itself notes that results can vary across companies. A difference between reports is not, by itself, proof that one provider is wrong.
Embark says its test recognizes 400+ breeds and claims 99% breed accuracy; Wisdom Panel advertises 430+ breeds. These figures describe each provider’s own offering or claim, not a directly comparable independent accuracy result. Embark also says it can identify Village Dog populations. Ask what a company’s coverage statement means for your dog’s background rather than treating a breed count as a guarantee for every mix.

Neither provider’s feature list establishes which test performs best across diverse mixed-breed dogs or Village Dog populations under comparable independent testing. The available comparison is therefore most useful for choosing features, not declaring an accuracy winner.
How to interpret health, traits, and relative matching
Health screening is not a diagnosis
A genetic result can indicate that a dog carries a tested variant or may be at risk, but it does not assess every cause of illness or predict health on its own. Embark notes that a dog’s health also depends on diet, environment, and lifestyle. Discuss an at-risk result with your veterinarian, who can interpret it in light of your dog’s history and clinical condition.

- RELATIVE FINDER: Find and connect with your pup's family through the world’s first canine relative finder. Over 90% of dogs tested by Embark have a close relative, like a cousin, and 12% discover a direct family member.
- ANCESTRY: Our genetic analysis can reveal most dogs' breed mix going back to their great-grandparents. With the information embedded in your dog's DNA, we can identify the routes that distant ancestors took around the world before they came home to you
- BEHAVIOR INSIGHTS + TRAINING PLAN (IN-APP UPGRADE): Barking at the door or struggling when left alone? Upgrade in the Embark app to unlock 15 genetic behavior scores that show what your dog may be wired for, plus a personalized training plan built around those instincts
- Simple At-Home Swab With 2-Way Shipping: Swab your dog's cheek, register online, and mail it back with the prepaid label in the box. Results generally land in 2-4 weeks. Veterinarian developed, with results you can send straight to your vet from the app
Traits and behavior are different kinds of insight
Physical-trait results are estimates about inherited characteristics. Behavior claims deserve more caution: Wisdom Panel says its behavior insights use statistical models and were developed using data from over 4.5 million pets, 1.5 million veterinary medical records, and more than 200,000 survey responses. Those are company-reported data inputs, not independent validation that a genetic test can predict an individual dog’s personality, training needs, or future behavior.

Relative matches depend on who else has tested
Both providers describe relative-finding features, but a match requires relevant dogs to be represented in that company’s database. A relative feature does not guarantee that your dog will receive matches, or that every close relative will appear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before ordering
- Choose the question first. Decide whether you want breed and ancestry information, health screening, or a combination.
- Verify the tier’s inclusions. Compare the specific kit—not just the provider’s brand page—for health, traits, and relative features.
- Read claims in context. Treat breed counts, condition counts, accuracy percentages, and database descriptions as provider statements unless independent evidence is identified.
- Check collection and timing. Embark describes a cheek swab, online activation, mail return, and an estimated 2–4-week result timeline. Verify current instructions and timing with the provider before ordering.
- Review current checkout details. Product features and promotional prices can change, so confirm the current offer and terms on the provider’s site.
