A large, properly wide tall tank can suit angelfish; a smaller heated and covered tank is usually better for one betta or a carefully chosen small gourami. Schooling fish such as rasboras need enough footprint for a group, so a narrow tank may not work even when the fish are small.
What makes a fish suitable for a vertical aquarium?
Most fish use horizontal swimming space. A tall tank adds water volume and height, but it does not replace the length and width needed for swimming, social groups, or territories. Two aquariums with the same capacity can offer very different usable space if one has a much smaller footprint.
Before choosing a species, check the aquarium’s inside length and width, adult fish size and behavior, group-size needs, temperature, water flow, cover, and whether the tank can be securely covered. A tall tank with a tiny base is not automatically suitable for fish that need room to swim.
Which fish suit a tall aquarium?
| Fish | Space and social needs | Behavior and setup | Fit for a vertical tank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angelfish | 55 gallons or larger when full grown, according to Aqueon; tank must also provide adequate width. | Adult fins can make the fish over a foot tall. Keep water around 78–84°F, with gentle flow, broad-leaf plants, and vertical wood. | One of the clearest height-oriented choices, but only for a genuinely large tank with enough width—not a tall, narrow wall aquarium. |
| Betta | One male per tank; males are highly territorial. Aqueon recommends at least 15 gallons for community setups. | Prefers warm, sluggish water; recommended temperature is 76–85°F and pH 6.8–7.5. Provide a secure lid because bettas can jump. | A straightforward choice for a smaller vertical tank if it is heated, covered, filtered, and maintained. |
| Small gouramis: sparkling, croaking, honey, dwarf | Some can be kept in tanks as small as 10 gallons; suitability still depends on footprint and species temperament. | About 75–80°F and gentle filtration; surface or floating plants provide useful cover. | Can suit smaller tall aquariums, but confirm the exact species and its adult needs before buying. |
| Medium gouramis: pearl, blue, gold, opaline, moonlight | Generally need 30 gallons or more. | Use gentle filtration and surface cover; allow enough horizontal room for the fish and any tankmates. | Consider only if the tall aquarium has a substantial footprint. |
| Kissing gourami | 55 gallons or more. | Needs a large aquarium rather than just extra height. | Unsuitable for a small-footprint vertical tank. |
| Giant gourami | 250 gallons or more; can reach 24 inches. | Adult size demands a very large setup. | Not a practical choice for an ordinary home vertical aquarium. |
| Rasboras | Aqueon recommends groups of seven or more. Most species stay under 4 inches; harlequin and lambchop rasboras are typically under 2 inches, and Boraras dwarf rasboras reach about 1 inch or less. | Provide planted décor, dark substrate, gentle current, and a secure lid. | Possible only when the footprint supports a proper group; small adult size does not make a narrow tank suitable. |
Can angelfish live in a tall, narrow aquarium?
Height suits an angelfish’s body shape, but a narrow footprint is still a problem. Aqueon recommends 55 gallons or larger for full-grown angelfish and notes that tall aquariums are best for their shape. Adult fins can make an angelfish over a foot tall, so check both vertical clearance and tank width. Do not use a small wall tank simply because it is tall.

For an appropriate setup, keep the water around 78–84°F, choose gentle flow, and provide broad-leaf plants and vertical wood. Make the adult aquarium plan before purchasing a juvenile.
What fish can go in a 10-gallon vertical aquarium?
A single betta is often the simplest fish option for a small vertical aquarium, provided the setup is heated, filtered, covered, and maintained. Some small gouramis—sparkling, croaking, honey, or dwarf—may also suit tanks as small as 10 gallons, but the exact species, its temperament, and the tank’s footprint matter. The minimum gallon figure alone does not establish that a particular vertical tank is suitable.

- HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
- IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
- MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
- CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
- PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.
Rasboras are not automatically a better option because they are small: they are social and should be kept in a group of at least seven according to Aqueon. Choose them only if the aquarium’s length and width can support the group and provide swimming room.

Avoid danios, larger rainbowfish, and other fast, open-water swimmers when the tank does not provide horizontal swimming space. A small body size does not cancel out a fish’s need to swim or live with a group. Aqueon says tetras, barbs, danios, and rasboras do best in groups of six or more; rasbora guidance specifies seven or more.

How to set up and maintain a vertical aquarium
- Match the heater to the setup. Size an aquarium heater to the actual water volume and room temperature, and maintain the chosen species’ temperature range.
- Treat replacement water. Use water conditioner on tap water before refilling.
- Filter without creating harsh flow. Bettas, gouramis, and rasboras benefit from gentle current.
- Provide cover and a lid. Use plants or floating cover where appropriate, and secure the aquarium with a lid, particularly for bettas and rasboras.
- Keep up with water changes. Aqueon’s care guidance commonly recommends changing 10% weekly or 25% every two weeks; its rasbora guidance also allows 25% twice monthly. Siphon or vacuum the substrate as part of maintenance.
