How to choose a harness for a kitten

Introduce the harness before using a leash outdoors
Give your kitten time to get used to the sensation in a calm, familiar setting. PetSafe recommends several short, positive acclimation sessions rather than forcing a long first attempt. If the kitten’s reaction appears likely to escalate, end the session instead of prolonging it. PetSafe also advises removing the harness when the cat is calm.
- Let the kitten investigate: Place the harness nearby and allow the kitten to approach it without forcing contact.
- Build comfort in short sessions: Gradually work toward fitting and wearing the harness. Keep sessions positive and stop if distress is increasing.

PetSafe and RC Pets provide product-specific fit information; apply each maker’s instructions only to its own harness. The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ Feline Behavior Guidelines are quoted in PetSafe’s manual as emphasizing environmental enrichment and routine as part of reducing stress. In practice, a positive, gradual introduction is more useful than expecting a harness design alone to make a kitten comfortable.
