For cats that tolerate automation, a self-cleaning model can cut down on routine scooping—but it still needs litter, waste-bin, and unit maintenance. A conventional box may be simpler, cheaper to run, or easier for a senior cat to enter.
These 12 picks cover both automatic and manual designs. They are organized by use case, not a single test ranking: the available evidence combines manufacturer specifications with third-party testing and reviews, rather than identical hands-on tests of every model. How to choose a litter box your cat can use
Start with your cat’s access needs and habits, then check whether the box fits your home and cleaning routine. A feature-rich automatic unit is a poor fit if your cat avoids its entrance, and a compact box can be inconvenient if it does not give your cat enough room to turn and dig.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Access: Older cats and cats with physical limitations may struggle with top-entry designs or high sides. The ASPCA’s litter-box guidance recommends considering accessibility.
- Space: Measure the spot where the box will sit, including room to open a lid or remove a waste drawer. Compare that with the product’s stated dimensions; a listed footprint does not describe all the space needed for use and cleaning.
- Litter and upkeep: Automatic boxes can have specific litter requirements and consumables. Confirm what you will need to replenish and how often the maker says to clean the unit.
- Your cat’s preference: Enclosure, entry style, and material can affect acceptance. In Consumer Reports testing summarized by Quartz, cats did not respond uniformly to box styles.
If your cat repeatedly visits the box but produces only small amounts of urine, contact a veterinarian. A new litter box is not a substitute for assessment of a possible medical problem; the ASPCA advises veterinary evaluation for this pattern.
#1 Best Overall
- Large Capacity: The Idymere stainless steel litter box measures 16.93"L x 12.99"W x 5.12"H, offering ample space for kitty, kittens, elderly cats or medium cats to do their business comfortably. This litter box is ideal for single or multiple small-cat households. The open design of this large litter box promotes air circulation and helps reduce unpleasant odors, ensuring your pets have a fresh and comfortable environment.
- Strong and Sturdy: Made of high-quality stainless steel, this litter box resists corrosion, wear, and rust. Unlike plastic litter boxes, it does not trap residue or odors, helping keep your home smelling clean. The sturdy, non-porous surface of the metal litter box prevents scratches where dirt and smells can hide, creating a healthier space for your cat.
- Easy Cleaning: The spacious stainless steel design of this cat litter box requires less frequent litter changes. The smooth surface of the litter pan prevents waste from sticking, allowing litter and debris to slide easily to the bottom for quick cleaning. It’s especially useful for cats that kick litter or urinate high, and it dries fast for simple maintenance.
- High Sides & Safe Rounded Edges: Featuring raised sides, this stainless steel litter box effectively contains litter scatter—perfect for energetic or large cats. The litter box with high sides also help prevent urine and feces from adhering to the sides. The kitten litter box with smooth, rounded edges ensure safety for your cat and make the metal litter box easy to lift without hurting your hands.
- Versatile Use & Multiple Sizes: This stainless steel litter box suits various pets, including adult cats, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, and snakes. This stainless steel box can also double as a pet bathing tub or storage container. Available in several sizes, you can choose the best fit litter tray for your pet without taking up too much space, ensuring comfort and flexibility for different needs.
Best litter boxes by use case
1. Whisker Litter-Robot 4: Best premium automatic box
The Litter-Robot 4 is for households seeking to reduce daily scooping and able to accommodate a large automatic unit. Whisker lists a 3–25 lb cat-weight range, capacity for up to four cats, and a 22 × 27-inch footprint. The company recommends clumping clay litter. Its official product page listed a starting price of $699 when accessed October 7, 2026; prices can change.
A Consumer Reports test summary relayed by Quartz says the unit reduced daily cleanup, but notes its size ruled out some preferred locations and not every cat accepted it. It still requires litter changes and cleaning. Treat the four-cat rating as the manufacturer’s specification, not a promise that every multi-cat household will find its capacity or maintenance schedule suitable.
Check Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 specifications.
2. Neakasa M1 Plus: Best open-top automatic design
The M1 Plus is an open-top automatic option to consider if your cat dislikes entering an enclosed drum. VettedFur’s September 17, 2026 comparison reports Neakasa’s stated cat range as 2.2 to around 33 lb, with an 11.23 L waste bin and up to 14 days of stated capacity. These are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independently verified performance guarantees. Confirm dimensions, current configuration, and your cat’s comfort with the open unit before buying.

3. PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2: Best for app-based monitoring features
The Purobot Max Pro 2 adds a camera and app monitoring to an automatic box. VettedFur attributes to PETKIT a recognition capacity of up to 15 cats and a 22 lb weight ceiling. Those figures describe maker-stated capabilities; activity tracking and alerts are not a veterinary diagnosis. Before choosing it, check whether the camera and connected features suit your household, and verify the current product configuration.
See PETKIT’s Purobot Max Pro 2 details.
4. Whisker Litter-Robot EVO: Best for a smaller home, subject to fit checks
VettedFur describes the EVO as intended for one or two cats and for tighter spaces such as an apartment or bathroom. The comparison does not establish current dimensions here, so measure your available space against the live product listing rather than assuming it will fit because it is positioned as a small-space option.
Review VettedFur’s automatic litter-box comparison.
5. PETKIT PuraMax 2: Consider only after confirming the current model
The PuraMax 2 appears as a value candidate in 2026 comparisons, but its manufacturer product URL now redirects to the Purobot Max 3. That makes current naming and availability especially important to verify: do not assume a listing for PuraMax 2 refers to a currently supported or unchanged model. Compare the exact model generation, included features, and return terms before ordering.
Check the current destination of PETKIT’s PuraMax 2 product page.
6. PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin: Automatic option to price-check
The SmartSpin appears in Cats.com’s automatic litter-box comparison. Because product configuration and retail pricing can change, verify the exact version and what is included in the listing you are considering. Account for the ongoing litter and cleaning routine, not just the purchase price.
See Cats.com’s automatic litter-box comparison.
7. PetSafe ScoopFree Pro: Best for a rake-style self-cleaning mechanism
The ScoopFree Pro uses a rake-style approach rather than the rotating design used by some automatic boxes. In Consumer Reports testing summarized by Quartz, the rake missed some smaller waste, and odor could accumulate. That makes it a less compelling fit if small clumps or odor control are your main concerns. Check the exact litter-tray setup and recurring supply needs for the model available in your region.

8. WoofiGo Stainless Steel Cat Litter Box: Best conventional steel option
A stainless-steel pan is a straightforward alternative to an automatic unit. Consumer Reports testing summarized by Quartz found that waste stuck less to the tested steel box than to the tested plastic boxes. The tested WoofiGo also had a seam that may need more frequent cleaning. Check pan dimensions and side height against your cat’s needs; the source summary does not establish that every steel box performs the same way.
See the Consumer Reports findings summarized by Quartz.
9. Amazon Basics Large Cat Litter Box: Best simple, budget-style pan
This conventional box offers simpler construction than an automatic unit and a low entrance noted in the Consumer Reports test summary relayed by Quartz. A low entry may be useful for some cats, but it does not establish that the box is large enough for every cat. Check the listed interior size and sides, and consider whether an open pan suits your cat’s habits.
Read the Quartz summary of the 2026 test.
10. Van Ness Pets EZ Clean Jumbo Enclosed Cat Litter Box: Best enclosed conventional box
The listed dimensions are 24 inches long by 19.5 inches wide, and the box has a ventilated filter opening. An enclosure can help contain litter, but it is not every cat’s preference: some cats in the test summary preferred an open box. Check the entry height and whether your cat is comfortable entering an enclosed space before choosing it.
See Quartz’s summary of Consumer Reports’ comparison.
11. Arm & Hammer Sifting Litter Box: Best for owners willing to sift manually
This manual system uses two pans, but its “sifting” design should not be mistaken for hands-off cleaning. The Consumer Reports test summary relayed by Quartz says it required more scraping and scooping than expected. Consider it if you want a manual box with a sifting step and are comfortable doing that extra work.
12. CatGenie A.I.: Best for homes with suitable plumbing access
CatGenie A.I. is a plumbed, self-washing alternative for a home where installation is feasible. Cats.com’s review, updated September 9, 2026, puts its price at around $499; that approximate figure is volatile. The review says it requires special granules and a Sani-Solution cartridge, as well as access to water and a drain. Include those installation and recurring-supply requirements in the cost and fit decision, not just the appliance price.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence does—and does not—tell you
The picks above combine different kinds of evidence. Manufacturer product pages establish what a company says its product supports; they do not independently prove performance. VettedFur’s comparison reports specifications and dated retail snapshots, while Quartz summarizes Consumer Reports testing of selected conventional and automatic designs. Cats.com provides a separate review of CatGenie A.I. These sources do not establish that all 12 boxes were tested side by side under identical conditions.
