A roomy, uncovered litter pan is a sensible first option for a cat that avoids its box—but no design suits every cat. Some prefer privacy, while others dislike enclosed spaces. Choose by your cat’s space, access and comfort needs, then watch what it actually uses. The nine options below are design types, not independently tested or ranked commercial models.

How to choose a litter box for a picky cat

Start by looking for a reason your cat might reject the current setup: cramped space, an awkward entrance, an enclosed design, a dirty box, an unpleasant litter texture or scent, a noisy location, or another pet blocking access. Change one factor at a time where possible so you can tell what helps. If you switch boxes, keep the familiar one available while your cat tries the alternative.

  • Room to move: Choose a box that lets your cat turn around and dig comfortably. Larger cats need more space; veterinary guidance suggests aiming for a box about 1.5 times the cat’s nose-to-tail length where feasible. See the 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines.
  • Entry: A low side or low-entry design may help kittens, older cats and cats with mobility limitations. Balance an easy entrance with enough litter containment for your household.
  • Cover: A cover can offer privacy, but it can also confine odors and limit visibility. Observe your cat rather than assuming that open or covered is always better.
  • Cleanliness and location: Scoop regularly and put the box somewhere quiet and easy to reach, away from food and water.
  • Number and placement: In a multi-cat home, provide enough boxes in separate, accessible places so one animal cannot easily block another’s route.

9 litter-box styles to consider

These options match common design needs. Their suitability depends on the individual cat; the available veterinary guidance supports preference-led selection, not a product ranking.

1. Extra-large open litter pan

A roomy open pan is a practical starting point when a cat seems cramped or dislikes an enclosed space. Its open top also makes scooping and observing use straightforward. Check the usable floor area, not just the outside dimensions.

#1 Best Overall
Idymere Stainless Steel High Sided Cat Litter Box
  • Large Capacity: The Idymere stainless steel litter box measures 16.93"L x 12.99"W x 5.12"H, offering ample space for kitty, kittens, elderly cats or medium cats to do their business comfortably. This litter box is ideal for single or multiple small-cat households. The open design of this large litter box promotes air circulation and helps reduce unpleasant odors, ensuring your pets have a fresh and comfortable environment.
  • Strong and Sturdy: Made of high-quality stainless steel, this litter box resists corrosion, wear, and rust. Unlike plastic litter boxes, it does not trap residue or odors, helping keep your home smelling clean. The sturdy, non-porous surface of the metal litter box prevents scratches where dirt and smells can hide, creating a healthier space for your cat.
  • Easy Cleaning: The spacious stainless steel design of this cat litter box requires less frequent litter changes. The smooth surface of the litter pan prevents waste from sticking, allowing litter and debris to slide easily to the bottom for quick cleaning. It’s especially useful for cats that kick litter or urinate high, and it dries fast for simple maintenance.
  • High Sides & Safe Rounded Edges: Featuring raised sides, this stainless steel litter box effectively contains litter scatter—perfect for energetic or large cats. The litter box with high sides also help prevent urine and feces from adhering to the sides. The kitten litter box with smooth, rounded edges ensure safety for your cat and make the metal litter box easy to lift without hurting your hands.
  • Versatile Use & Multiple Sizes: This stainless steel litter box suits various pets, including adult cats, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, and snakes. This stainless steel box can also double as a pet bathing tub or storage container. Available in several sizes, you can choose the best fit litter tray for your pet without taking up too much space, ensuring comfort and flexibility for different needs.

2. Low-entry open box

A low entrance can make stepping in easier for kittens, senior cats or cats with mobility problems. Make sure the interior still gives the cat room to turn and dig.

3. High-sided open box

Higher walls can help contain kicked litter while keeping the top open. Consider whether your cat can comfortably climb over the sides; a high wall is a poor trade if entry becomes difficult.

4. Open box with a separate splash guard

A removable guard can provide extra containment without fully enclosing the box. Check that it does not narrow the usable space or make the entrance harder to navigate.

5. Covered box

A hooded box may suit a cat that seeks privacy, but another cat may dislike the enclosed feel or trapped odors. If you want to test one, offer it alongside an open box and compare which your cat chooses. Merck notes that some cats dislike enclosed spaces while others may like a hooded box’s privacy (Merck Veterinary Manual, “Providing a Litter Box for a Cat”).

6. Top-entry box

A top-entry design may reduce litter scatter, but it requires a cat to jump or climb through an opening. It is not a good fit for a cat that has trouble reaching or using the entrance.

7. Large, high-capacity box

For a large-bodied cat or a home where a standard pan feels restrictive, prioritize generous usable interior dimensions. A bigger exterior shell does not guarantee a bigger space inside, especially in covered designs.

8. Self-cleaning litter box

Automatic cleaning may appeal to households seeking less routine scooping, but the moving mechanism can startle a skittish cat and lead to avoidance. If you try one, follow its instructions for introducing the device and retain a familiar box while your cat adjusts. The American Animal Hospital Association’s February 6, 2026 guidance flags this potential issue.

9. Simple open box with a different footprint

If the current box is hard to fit into a quiet, accessible spot, an open model with a shape better suited to the available space may help. Do not let a compact footprint sacrifice room for your cat to turn around.

Does a picky cat prefer an open or covered box?

There is no universal answer. Cornell reports that most cats prefer an uncovered box, which lets odors escape and provides a 360-degree view, but that is a general preference rather than a guarantee for an individual cat (Cornell Feline Health Center, “Feline Behavior Problems: House Soiling”). A study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery likewise found varied individual responses: many cats showed no preference, while some favored covered boxes and others uncovered ones.

If you are unsure, provide open and covered choices in separate accessible locations and note which your cat uses. The AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidelines emphasize evaluating the individual cat’s preferences; open boxes can also make monitoring and scooping easier.

What else can make a cat avoid the box?

A new box cannot solve every litter-box problem. Check the whole setup, including the litter and the route to the box.

  • Litter: If the box is clean but your cat still avoids it, consider whether the texture or scent is unacceptable. A fine, granular, clumping, odor-free litter is one possible starting point, not a promise of acceptance. Offer a new type as a separate choice rather than abruptly replacing a familiar litter.
  • Cleaning: Scoop regularly. The AAFP/ISFM guidance notes that regular cleaning may matter more than whether a box is covered.
  • Placement: Keep the box in a quiet, accessible area. A location beside food or water, in a busy passage, or near something frightening may deter use.
  • Social access: Watch whether another pet follows, corners or blocks your cat. More boxes in separate locations can give cats alternatives.
  • Recent changes: A new box, litter or location can take adjustment. Make changes gradually and preserve access to a familiar setup where possible.

When litter-box avoidance needs a veterinarian

Soiling outside the box can result from illness as well as behavior or setup problems. Arrange veterinary attention rather than assuming a new litter box will fix it. Straining in the box can be a life-threatening emergency, especially in a male cat; seek urgent veterinary care.
