The best natural cat litter is the one your cat will use consistently and that you can keep clean—not simply the one with the most eco-friendly-sounding material. Plant-based litters include pine, corn, wheat, walnut, grass, pea husk, tofu and other vegetal materials, but material alone does not establish how well a litter controls odour, clumps, tracks or suits your cat.
There is no universal winner in the available evidence, and the products below have not been compared in hands-on tests for this article. Use the shortlist to identify options worth checking against your cat’s preferences, your cleanup routine, local availability and product directions.
How to choose a natural cat litter
Start with the practical traits that affect daily use. PetMD recommends considering clumping, odour control, tracking and dust sensitivity, as well as sustainability. Chewy also compares odour control, clumping, dust and absorbency. A litter that performs well in one category may involve a trade-off in another.
- Clumping and scooping: Tight, firm clumps can be easier to remove while leaving clean litter in the box, according to PetMD. But clump strength varies by formula; a softer clump may need a slower, more careful scoop.
- Odour and scent: Check whether the formula is scented or unscented and what odour-control claim the maker or reviewer actually describes. A fragrance is not proof that waste odour is controlled, and a cat may reject a scented product.
- Dust and tracking: These matter for household cleanup and for cats or people sensitive to dust. Product-specific claims should not be assumed to apply to every litter made from the same material.
- Absorbency and upkeep: Consider how often the box will need topping up or changing, as well as whether the litter is easy to scoop without wasting clean material.
- Cat acceptance: Introduce a new litter with attention to whether your cat continues using the box. If the cat avoids it, a theoretically appealing material is not a workable choice.
- Cost and availability: Compare current local prices on a consistent basis, such as cost per weight, and confirm that the product is actually available where you live. Retailer listings, ratings and prices can change.
There is not a verified, comparable life-cycle assessment here that establishes which of these materials has the lowest overall environmental impact. “Natural,” “plant-based,” “recycled” or “biodegradable” should not be read as proof of superior performance or a quantified environmental advantage.

Natural and plant-based cat litters to consider
This shortlist brings together product examples from retailer listings, publisher reviews and manufacturer pages. The evidence is not a head-to-head ranking: manufacturer specifications are claims by the maker, and reviewer observations apply to the specific products reviewed.
| Product | Material and format | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalyst Pet Multi-Cat Formula | Pine litter made from upcycled softwood, according to Cats.com. | Cats.com describes clumping, odour-control, dust and tracking observations from its review. Chewy also lists a Catalyst multi-cat pine litter. | These are Cats.com review observations, not tests conducted for this article. Check the current product listing, formula details and suitability for your cat. |
| Catit Go Natural Pea Husk Clumping Cat Litter | Clumping pea-husk litter. | Catit’s UK product page says the litter uses discarded pea husks and food-grade materials, absorbs up to three times its weight, is 99% dust-free/low-tracking and forms tight clumps. The page lists vanilla and lavender variants. | Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative results. The page was marked sold out when accessed, so check current availability. Do not assume the claims apply to other pea-husk litters. |
| Sanicat 100% Green Vegetal Clumping Litter | Clumping vegetal litter. | Sanicat describes it as recycled, biodegradable and compostable, with clumps and natural odour neutralisation. | These are manufacturer claims. Its directions say to discard it in the rubbish bin according to local regulations; do not infer that it should be flushed. |
| World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Cat Litter | Unscented, clumping corn litter. | Chewy includes it among its eco-friendly litter selections. | A retailer-listing example is not evidence of head-to-head performance. Check current availability and price. |
| Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Walnut Cat Litter | Unscented, clumping walnut litter. | Chewy includes it among its eco-friendly litter selections. | A retailer-listing example is not evidence of head-to-head performance. Check current availability and price. |
| SmartCat Unscented Clumping Grass Cat Litter | Unscented, clumping grass litter. | Chewy includes it among its eco-friendly litter selections. | A retailer-listing example is not evidence of head-to-head performance. Check current availability and price. |
| Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter | Tofu pellets made from soy byproduct, according to Cats.com. | Cats.com reports that two formulas are flushable/compostable, while an OdorStop formula includes bentonite and is not flushable. It also reports that the clumps can be more delicate than clay. | These observations and formula details are specific to the product. More delicate clumps may call for slower scooping; check the exact formula rather than generalising to tofu litter. |
What “natural” and “eco-friendly” do—and do not—tell you
Plant-based litters are not one uniform category. PetMD names corn, wheat and pine among natural litter materials; product examples in retailer and manufacturer sources add walnut, grass, pea husk, tofu/soy byproduct and vegetal litter. Each material can be paired with different processing, clumping and scent choices, so the label alone cannot predict how the product will work in your home.
Rank #2
- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
The available sources do not establish a comparable environmental ranking among these materials. Treat claims such as recycled, biodegradable or compostable as product-specific claims, and check what the manufacturer says about disposal as well as local waste rules. A disposal claim is not an instruction that applies to every plumbing system or municipality.
How to maintain the litter box
PetMD’s general guidance is to scoop daily, keep 1–3 inches of litter in the box, replace litter as needed and change all the litter monthly. During the monthly change, it recommends washing the box with soap and water. Product directions and household needs may vary.

- Cat Litter - A low-tracking material means your cat won't track litter and bacteria through your home.
Can natural or plant-based litter be flushed?
Do not treat “flushable” as a universal disposal instruction. PetMD cautions that plumbing systems may not handle flushable litter and says its veterinary panel recommends bagging used litter and putting it in the trash. Follow the specific product directions and local rules. For example, Sanicat’s directions for its 100% Green Vegetal Clumping Litter say to discard it in the rubbish bin according to local regulations.
