Best overall natural-chew categories: appropriately sized bully sticks and collagen chews are the most practical starting points for many healthy adult dogs. No-Hide is a food-based rawhide-free option, while yak cheese is a conditional choice because it can be too hard for teeth. If your main goal is plaque or tartar control, choose a product accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council rather than assuming any natural chew is a dental treatment.
Natural is an ingredient or sourcing description—not a guarantee of safety. The right choice depends on the chew’s hardness, the dog’s size and chewing style, medical history, and your ability to supervise and remove dangerous pieces.

The short answer
For many healthy adult dogs, appropriately sized bully sticks and collagen chews are the most useful natural-chew categories: they are animal-protein options without traditional rawhide. Food-based No-Hide chews are another reasonable rawhide-free choice. Yak-cheese chews can last a long time, but their hardness makes them a conditional option rather than a universally safe recommendation.
No natural chew is automatically safe. The word natural describes ingredients or sourcing; it is not a safety certification. Choose based on three separate questions: what the chew contains, how hard and digestible it is for your particular dog, and whether there is credible evidence for any dental claim. Supervise every session, select a chew too large to swallow whole, and remove it when it becomes small, sharp, cracked, or damaged.

Important: A dog can choke on or develop a gastrointestinal obstruction from an edible chew, and very hard chews can fracture teeth. Dogs with a history of swallowing objects, intestinal obstruction, fractured teeth, dental disease, pancreatitis, significant allergies, or oral pain should have their chew options reviewed with a veterinarian.
Best natural dog chews compared
| Chew type | Best fit | What it is | Main caution | Dental evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bully sticks | Adults that want a single-ingredient, meat-based chew | Beef pizzle; Redbarn describes its product as 100% beef pizzle | Can be swallowed in pieces, upset the stomach, cause obstruction, add substantial calories, or damage teeth if extremely hard | Chewing may provide mechanical abrasion, but it is not proof of plaque or tartar control |
| Collagen sticks and braids | Owners seeking a rawhide-free animal-protein alternative | Collagen-containing beef chews in stick or braided formats | Digestible does not mean risk-free; large pieces can still be swallowed | No blanket dental-treatment claim |
| Earth Animal No-Hide | Dogs whose owners want to avoid traditional animal hide | A processed chew made from food ingredients such as protein, brown rice flour, eggs, and olive oil, according to the company | Ingredient sensitivities, gastrointestinal upset, and gulping remain possible | Do not assume rawhide-free means dentally proven |
| Yak-cheese chews | Some adult dogs that tolerate dairy and gnaw rather than aggressively bite | Hard cheese blocks generally made from yak milk, sometimes cow’s milk, with salt and lime juice | Hardness can fracture teeth; discard if cracked, sharp, or small | Not a substitute for an accepted dental product |
| VOHC-accepted dental chews | Owners whose primary goal is plaque or tartar reduction | Dental products that have earned acceptance for specified claims | May not meet a narrow definition of natural; acceptance is product-specific | Stronger basis for a specific plaque or tartar claim than a generic natural chew |
| Bones, antlers, hooves, and very hard nylon or plastic | Not recommended as a default choice | Very hard natural or synthetic objects | Tooth fractures, mouth injuries, choking, swallowed fragments, obstruction, and contamination risks | Durability is not evidence of dental safety |
1. Bully sticks: the best mainstream starting point
Bully sticks are single-ingredient beef-pizzle chews. Redbarn describes its bully sticks as made from 100% beef pizzle and says they are digestible when fed appropriately. That makes them a straightforward fit for an owner looking for a meat-based, rawhide-free chew with a short ingredient list.
They are not risk-free, however. Redbarn’s own guidance says to choose a stick larger than the dog’s mouth, size up when between categories, remove small end pieces, and supervise because swallowed pieces can cause choking, gastric upset, or blockage. It also acknowledges that hard chewing can damage teeth. Those warnings are part of the recommendation, not fine print to ignore.
Recommended Free Tools
If you are comparing natural dog chews, bully sticks are a sensible category to investigate first when your dog is an adult, chews rather than gulps, tolerates beef, and has healthy teeth. They are not low-calorie by default, and no responsible guide can promise that one stick will last a particular number of minutes or days. Thickness, length, the individual dog, and chewing intensity make a large difference.
How to use one more safely
- Follow the package’s size chart and choose a product that cannot be swallowed whole. If your dog is between sizes, size up.
- Watch the first several sessions closely. Some dogs gnaw gradually; others tear off and swallow large sections.
- Remove the small remaining end rather than allowing your dog to gulp it.
- Discard a stick that becomes sharp, splintered, unusually soft, contaminated, or small enough to fit fully in the dog’s mouth.
- A bully-stick holder may help keep a small end from being swallowed, but it does not remove the need for supervision or eliminate choking and tooth-injury risk.
2. Collagen chews: a useful rawhide-free alternative
Collagen sticks and braids occupy a similar animal-protein space without using the traditional bully-stick format. Barkworthies markets its collagen beef sticks and braided collagen chews as all-natural, easily digestible alternatives to rawhide and offers options aimed at different chewing intensities.
That positioning can make collagen dog chews appealing to owners who want an edible, animal-based option but prefer collagen sticks or braids. The important qualification is that these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative tests showing that every collagen chew lasts longer, digests better, or is safer for every dog.

“Digestible” should be read as a product-positioning and ingredient claim, not a guarantee. A dog that tears off and swallows a large piece can still choke or develop gastrointestinal problems. Choose the size for the dog’s mouth, supervise the session, and remove the chew when the remaining piece becomes manageable as a swallowed object.

3. No-Hide chews: a food-based option for avoiding traditional hide
Earth Animal’s No-Hide line is presented by the company as a long-lasting alternative made from real food ingredients rather than animal hide. The company’s ingredient framework includes protein, brown rice flour, eggs, and olive oil. This is best understood as a processed food-based chew—not as an unprocessed bone, horn, or piece of meat.
No-Hide dog chews may suit an owner who wants a rawhide-free product with a food-ingredient formulation. They still need the same practical screening as any edible chew:
- Read the exact label for the flavor and size you are buying. Formulas can differ, and a dog allergic to one ingredient may not tolerate another variety.
- Do not treat a food-based recipe as universally safer than every other chew.
- Observe whether your dog gnaws it into small pieces or attempts to swallow sections whole.
- Stop if it causes repeated vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or other unusual signs.
Rawhide-free is a useful description, but it does not mean obstruction-proof, calorie-free, or appropriate for every dog.
4. Yak-cheese chews: simple ingredients with a serious hardness warning
Yak-cheese chews are generally hard blocks made from yak milk, sometimes cow’s milk, salt, and lime juice. The American Kennel Club describes them as low in lactose and long-lasting. Those characteristics explain their popularity, but they do not resolve the central safety concern: hardness.
A chew can be natural, simple-ingredient, and durable while still being too hard for a dog’s teeth. Veterinary guidance from VCA and UC Davis uses a practical screening rule: avoid objects that cannot be indented with a fingernail. This is not a guarantee of safety, but it is a useful reason to reject many rock-hard products.

Consider yak cheese dog chews only conditionally—for an adult dog that tolerates dairy, does not bite down aggressively, and can be watched continuously. Do not choose one for a puppy with immature teeth, a dog with compromised teeth, or a dog whose chewing style involves powerful repetitive cracking. Remove it immediately if it becomes cracked, sharp, too small, or difficult for the dog to handle.
What to avoid or approach with extreme caution
Bones
VCA warns that bones can break teeth, injure the mouth, cause choking, damage the stomach or intestines, become lodged, and cause an obstruction. Raw bones also introduce pathogen concerns. The FDA warns that sharp bone pieces can cause severe internal injuries and that unchewed treats may lodge in the airway or gastrointestinal tract.
Antlers
Antlers are often marketed as natural and long-lasting, but that durability is exactly the problem. The AKC warns that their hardness can break teeth and that shards may injure the mouth, throat, or intestines. A natural origin does not make an antler a safer chew.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

VCA’s chew guidance also cautions about cow hooves, hard rawhides, and other objects that are too hard. Very hard nylon or plastic chews should not be recommended merely because they are durable or labeled for powerful chewers. If you cannot make a visible indentation with a fingernail, treat that as a warning to choose a softer option.
Not every rubber enrichment toy belongs in the same category as an edible chew. For a dog that needs an occupation but is a poor candidate for edible chews, a supervised KONG Classic dog toy made from natural rubber and used for treat dispensing can be a more appropriate direction than escalating to an antler or bone. Follow the manufacturer’s size and chewing-strength guidance, inspect it regularly, and discontinue it if damaged. No toy is indestructible.
How to match a chew to your dog
Start with the dog’s chewing style, not the marketing label
Manufacturers’ labels such as “moderate,” “long-lasting,” or “power chewer” are starting points, not guarantees. Two dogs of the same weight can use the same chew very differently. A steady gnawer may work through a bully stick gradually; a gulper may remove and swallow a large piece quickly.

- Steady adult gnawer: An appropriately sized bully stick or collagen chew may be a reasonable trial, with close supervision.
- Dog that gulps: Edible chews present a higher swallowing risk. Discuss alternatives with your veterinarian, and consider supervised food-dispensing rubber enrichment instead of a small or easily torn chew.
- Powerful biter: Do not automatically choose the hardest available object. Hardness raises tooth-fracture risk. A larger, appropriately sized option or non-edible enrichment may be safer than a bone, antler, or hoof.
- Dog avoiding traditional hide: Compare collagen and food-based No-Hide options, then read the complete ingredient panel and observe how the dog handles the chew.
- Dog with food allergies or a sensitive stomach: A short ingredient list can simplify label review, but it does not prove tolerance. Check proteins and other ingredients carefully and ask a veterinarian about repeated digestive reactions.
- Puppy: Avoid very hard products, especially bones and antlers. VCA recommends softer, bendable, or fingernail-indentable options for puppies because immature teeth are more vulnerable.
- Senior dog or dog with dental disease: Hard chewing may worsen an existing problem. Dental pain, loose teeth, bleeding, or difficulty eating calls for veterinary assessment rather than a harder chew.
Size matters more than a breed label
Choose a chew that is too large to swallow whole and appropriate for the dog’s mouth. Use the product’s exact size chart; bully-stick guidance, for example, provides size-based recommendations and says to size up between categories. Do not assume that a long chew is safe if it is thin enough to be swallowed, or that a thick chew is safe if the dog can break it into large chunks.

Edible chews are treats, not unlimited activities. Bully sticks in particular should not be assumed to be low-calorie. Check the package’s calorie information when available, account for the chew in the dog’s daily food intake, and be especially cautious with overweight dogs or dogs whose medical condition requires calorie control.
Natural chews and dental health are different goals
Chewing can provide enrichment and some mechanical contact with tooth surfaces, but that does not make a generic natural chew a proven dental treatment. Do not promise that a bully stick, collagen chew, No-Hide, or yak cheese will clean teeth, remove tartar, or prevent dental disease.
For a specific plaque or tartar claim, the stronger evidence signal is acceptance by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. The VOHC accepted-products list includes examples such as Greenies, OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews, Purina DentaLife, Veggiedent Flex Chews, some Dentastix variants, ProDen PlaqueOff products, and accepted dental diets and treats. Acceptance is product-specific, so check the current list and the exact product—not merely the brand name.
VOHC-accepted dental chews may be less aligned with an owner’s idea of a minimally processed or single-ingredient treat, but they serve a different purpose. Choose them when dental results are the priority, and do not substitute a chew for veterinary care when a dog has bad breath, visible tartar, painful chewing, bleeding gums, loose teeth, or other signs of oral disease.

- Inspect the chew before offering it. Reject products with damaged packaging, unusual contamination, cracks, sharp edges, or a size that can fit fully in the dog’s mouth.
- Watch every session. Supervision is particularly important during the first few uses and with any new texture or protein.
- Observe the chewing method. Remove the item if the dog starts breaking off and swallowing large sections rather than gnawing.
- Remove small remnants. The final piece is often the easiest part to gulp. A holder can assist with some bully-stick use, but it is not a complete safety solution.
- Check teeth and mouth afterward. Stop if you see blood, a chipped tooth, sudden reluctance to chew, excessive drooling, or obvious pain.
- Keep dogs separated when necessary. Competition can cause a dog to gulp a chew or guard it aggressively.
- Practice food hygiene. Wash your hands after handling treats and clean bowls and utensils. FDA guidance notes that pet food and treats can carry harmful bacteria, including Salmonella and Listeria risks.
- Do not rely on an advertised duration. Chew life varies with thickness, size, and the individual dog. Inspect rather than following a promised number of hours.
When to call a veterinarian
Seek urgent veterinary help if your dog is choking, struggling to breathe, repeatedly gagging, or showing signs that an object is lodged in the airway. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the dog swallows a large or sharp piece, especially if there is vomiting, abdominal pain or swelling, lethargy, loss of appetite, difficulty passing stool, bloody stool, or persistent diarrhea.

A practical buying decision
Use this order when choosing:
- Rule out an unsafe hardness or format. If it cannot be indented with a fingernail, or if it is a bone, antler, hoof, or similarly hard object, do not select it as a routine chew.
- Match the ingredient to the dog. Check beef, dairy, egg, grains, and other ingredients against allergies and digestive history.
- Match the size to the mouth and chewing style. Size up if uncertain; avoid anything the dog can swallow whole.
- Decide whether the goal is enrichment or dental care. Use an edible chew for supervised chewing enrichment, or check the current VOHC list when plaque or tartar control is the primary goal.
- Plan the end of the session. You—not the dog—should decide when a chew is too small, damaged, sharp, or otherwise unsafe.
Product formulas, catalogs, availability, and safety notices can change, so check the current package information for the exact product and size, particularly when buying in the United States.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are bully sticks safe for dogs?
Bully sticks can be a reasonable option for a healthy adult dog that gnaws rather than gulps, provided the stick is larger than the dog’s mouth and the dog is supervised. Remove small end pieces and discard the chew when it becomes small or damaged. They can still cause choking, gastrointestinal problems, blockage, tooth damage, and excess calorie intake.

What are the best natural chews for puppies?
Puppies should generally avoid very hard chews, especially bones and antlers. Veterinary guidance favors softer, bendable, or fingernail-indentable options for immature teeth. Ask your veterinarian about the right size and texture for your puppy.
What should I give an aggressive chewer?
Do not choose the hardest object simply because your dog is a powerful chewer. Bones, antlers, hooves, and very hard nylon or plastic products can fracture teeth or produce dangerous pieces. A supervised, appropriately sized rubber enrichment toy or a veterinarian-approved alternative may be a better fit.
Are rawhide-free chews safer than rawhide?
Rawhide-free products are not automatically risk-free. Collagen chews and Earth Animal No-Hide products are alternatives to traditional hide, but dogs can still swallow large pieces, have digestive reactions, or choke. Read the label, choose the right size, and supervise.
Do natural dog chews clean teeth?
Chewing may provide mechanical abrasion, but a generic natural chew is not proven to treat plaque or tartar. For a specific dental claim, look for the exact product on the current Veterinary Oral Health Council accepted-products list. Dental symptoms still warrant veterinary care.

Breathing difficulty, choking, or repeated gagging is an emergency. Contact a veterinarian promptly after a dog swallows a large or sharp piece, or if vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite, difficulty passing stool, bloody stool, or persistent diarrhea develops.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with a properly sized bully stick or collagen chew for a suitable adult dog, consider No-Hide when avoiding traditional hide, and treat yak cheese as a hard-chew risk rather than a default recommendation. For dental claims, use the current VOHC accepted-products list. Whatever you choose, supervision, sizing, tooth hardness, ingredient fit, and timely discarding matter more than the word “natural.”
