They are not interchangeable, and none treats the cause of a mobility problem. Ask your veterinarian about new or worsening changes and which aids suit your dog.
Choose an aid for the specific difficulty

There are no universal numerical thresholds established here for ramp slope or dimensions, harness load, or rug thickness. Follow the product specifications and get individualized advice from a veterinarian or rehabilitation professional.
Improve footing with rugs and runners
Start by mapping your dog’s usual route between resting, eating, drinking, and toileting areas. Cover the slick sections with rugs, runners, or mats so your dog can move between them with more secure footing. VCA recommends rugs or runners in the areas a mobility-compromised dog uses, with non-slip backing and no raised corners or edges. Its osteoarthritis guidance also mentions yoga mats and interlocking foam tiles; AAHA and Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE) list rugs or yoga mats among possible home modifications.
Secure each covering with non-slip backing or a separate pad, and check that it lies flat. A rug that shifts, wrinkles, or curls at the edges can create a trip hazard rather than solve one. Choose coverage and material for your floor, your dog’s route, and your ability to keep it clean; no single material is right for every home.

Use a ramp to avoid a jump—not to fix slippery floors
A ramp can provide a route around a jump or elevation change, such as vehicle access. VCA notes that a vehicle ramp may help reduce stress on a dog’s back and leg joints, but it must be sturdy and must not slip. CARE also recommends considering non-slip surfaces, adequate width, and sturdiness appropriate to the dog’s size.
- Check the ramp’s dimensions and stated load capacity against your dog and the space where it will be used.
- Make sure it stays stable on the ground and provides secure footing along its surface.
- Consider whether your dog can walk the incline comfortably and safely; a ramp is not appropriate for every dog or situation.
- Introduce it gradually and watch your dog’s response rather than assuming it will be accepted.
A ramp addresses an elevation change; a runner or mat addresses traction on a level floor. Neither is a universal substitute for safely managing stairs. Ask your veterinarian whether your dog should use stairs, a ramp, or another form of assistance.

Choose a harness or sling for the support task
A fitted, padded harness may help when a larger dog needs lifting support. AAHA includes fitted, padded harnesses among possible accessories for aiding the lifting of larger pets. CARE describes harnesses and slings as assistive-device categories and names the Help ’Em Up Harness as an example—not as a product ranking or a universal recommendation.
Fit and support location matter. A harness intended to help with lifting is not automatically the right choice for walking, stairs, or every mobility condition. Ask a veterinarian or rehabilitation professional where and how to support your dog, and check that the aid is comfortable, can be put on safely, and does not prevent necessary activities. Do not lift by an ill-fitting collar.

Make the change part of an individualized care plan
Rugs, ramps, and support harnesses are home aids, not diagnoses or treatment plans. Mobility changes can have different causes, so consult a veterinarian about new or worsening difficulty and about appropriate activity, stairs, lifting, or home modifications. AAHA describes accessories such as ramps, rugs or yoga mats, and fitted padded harnesses as possible parts of broader senior-pet care; VCA likewise presents home adjustments alongside care for osteoarthritis.
Introduce an aid in a way your dog can tolerate, and observe whether it actually makes the relevant movement safer and more comfortable. If your dog cannot use a ramp safely, slips despite a floor covering, or resists support, stop and seek individualized guidance rather than forcing the aid.
