The best orthopedic bed for an older dog is one that provides comfortable support, fits the dog’s body and sleeping style, and is easy to get into. “Orthopedic” on a label is not a guarantee of a particular level of support: compare the bed’s construction, shape, entry and care instructions, then consider whether your dog will actually use it.
What to look for in an orthopedic bed for an older dog
Start with your dog rather than a product label. PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed guide recommends choosing for the individual dog’s size, breed and support needs, and notes that the bed is only a good fit if the dog likes using it. Read PetMD’s guide to orthopedic dog beds.
- Supportive construction: Look for a bed described as having supportive foam, and check what the product actually contains. The veterinary sources do not establish a universal foam thickness or density threshold, so a single number cannot reliably define an orthopedic bed.
- Enough room: Compare the usable sleeping surface with your dog’s body length and the way they rest. A dog should be able to stretch out without being forced against a bolster.
- Comfortable access: Consider how high the sleeping surface is and whether the dog must climb over a raised edge. An open side or lower entrance may be easier for a stiff dog.
- Care details: Check whether the cover comes off, what washing directions apply, and whether a waterproof layer is included or sold separately if accidents are a concern.
- Acceptance: A theoretically supportive bed is not useful if your dog avoids it. If possible, check the seller’s return terms before buying.
Choose the shape for how your dog sleeps
For dogs that stretch out
An open mattress-style bed gives a dog that sleeps sprawled more room to change position. Check the interior dimensions rather than relying only on the product’s size label, especially if the bed has raised edges that reduce the flat area.
For dogs that curl up or rest their head
A bolster can give a dog an edge to lean against or rest its head on. It may suit dogs that curl, provided the entrance is still easy to use. A bolster around all four sides can make getting onto the bed harder for some dogs with joint problems; look for an open side, a lower edge or a dip in the bolster.

Make getting on and off part of the decision
For an older dog, entry can matter as much as cushioning. Watch how your dog approaches the bed: do they step onto a low surface, hesitate at an edge, or need to climb over a wall? Choose a design that does not require more effort than the dog can comfortably manage.
The route to the bed also matters. VCA recommends considering ramps or steps when a large dog with arthritis struggles to climb, and discusses non-skid rugs or mats to improve traction around the home. Plan for cleaning if your dog has accidents
Some older dogs become incontinent. VCA mentions pee pads as one practical measure, while a veterinary-authored bed-shopping guide recommends checking for washable covers and waterproof protection. These features vary by product: confirm whether the cover is removable, whether the foam itself can be washed, and whether a waterproof liner is built in or must be purchased separately. Are orthopedic beds worth it for senior dogs?
A supportive bed can be a useful comfort adjustment, but it is not a treatment for osteoarthritis and does not replace veterinary care. VCA includes orthopedic or memory foam bedding among possible changes to a comfortable sleeping area, alongside veterinary management, weight management and controlled exercise. Osteoarthritis is progressive, so ask your veterinarian about new or worsening stiffness, pain or mobility changes rather than relying on a new bed to address them.
