A common starting guideline is about 3–5 small fish in total, but that figure depends on filtration, rockwork, adult size, and temperament. It is a setup-dependent guideline, not a fixed limit.
How many fish a 20-gallon saltwater tank can hold
Stocking a marine tank is less about the number of fish and more about how much usable space, filtration, and biological capacity the system has. The Saltwater Aquarium Blog guide by Albert B. Ulrich III (August 31, 2026) describes 3–5 small fish as a general starting point for a 20-gallon system, while stressing that the number moves with filtration, live rock, adult size, territorial behavior, aquascape, and your care routine. Treat the range as a ceiling to approach cautiously, and use the lower end whenever you are unsure.
The shape of the tank matters as much as its volume. Two common 20-gallon formats are listed below. Dimensions vary by manufacturer, so check the actual measurements before buying a stand or lid.
| Format | Typical stated dimensions (L × W × H) | What it offers a small fish community |
|---|---|---|
| 20-gallon long | 30 × 12 × 12 in | More horizontal swimming room and separate territories along the length of the tank; generally the better choice for this list |
| 20-gallon high | 24 × 12 × 16 in | More vertical room, but less horizontal space for hovering or territorial fish to spread out |
Signs that a tank is overstocked include persistent aggression, stress, fish that hide constantly, refusal to eat, and declining water quality. If you see any of these, stop adding livestock, retest the water, and consider whether the most territorial fish should be removed before the others are affected.

What to look for when choosing fish for this footprint
Judge each candidate on the criteria below before deciding on a combination. A fish that is small when sold may grow into a poor choice for a 20-gallon system, so adult size matters more than the size at purchase.
- Adult size: Choose species that stay small as adults, not only as juveniles.
- Swimming style: Hovering, perching, and hiding species suit a compact tank better than active open-water swimmers.
- Aggression and territory: Two similar territorial fish can fight over the same small area.
- Feeding needs: Some wild-caught fish eat only live food and are difficult to keep in a small, immature system.
- Use of the aquascape: Fish that occupy different zones (rockwork, open water, sand) are easier to combine.
The Saltwater Aquarium Blog guide names several groups that are poor choices for this footprint: tangs, large angelfish, butterflyfish, anthias, triggers, puffers, eels, foxfaces, and aggressive clownfish such as maroon, tomato, and Clarkii types.

Candidate fish at a glance
The table below compares the commonly suggested candidates on the factors that matter most in a 20-gallon tank. Compatibility depends on the specific individuals, so use it as a shortlist rather than a guaranteed combination.
| Candidate | Typical behavior | Main limit in a 20-gallon tank | Extra requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocellaris or percula clownfish | Hovers near an anemone or rockwork; a common centerpiece | Pairing and individual temperament; the guide allows a pair of smaller clownfish in its general plan | Avoid aggressive clownfish such as maroon, tomato, and Clarkii types |
| Firefish (dartfish) | Peaceful hoverer in open water | Prone to jumping | Tight lid |
| Small gobies (clown, neon, Yasha, and similar) | Site-attached, bottom-oriented | Some do best in a mature tank with reliable food | Stable rockwork; sandy bottom if the goby digs |
| Tailspot blenny | Perch-oriented, small | Limited territory; similar blennies compete | Perching space on rock |
| Royal gramma | Colorful, cave-oriented | Can be pushed around by timid or bullying tankmates | Enough rockwork for caves |
| Cardinalfish | Slow, hovering | Count must stay conservative; compatibility must be checked | Hiding space in the rockwork |
Notes on specific candidates
Ocellaris or percula clownfish
Clownfish are the most familiar pick for a small reef, and they tolerate a compact tank well when they are the only fish of their kind. A pair can work in the general plan the 2026 guide describes, but two individuals must be compatible. Introduce them together when possible, and watch for one fish persistently chasing the other. If the pairing fails, the aggressive fish may need to be removed.

Firefish
Firefish are peaceful hoverers and are often recommended for a 20-gallon tank because they use open water without crowding the bottom. Their main weakness is jumping. Keep a tight-fitting lid on the tank at all times, and check that there are no gaps around equipment cords or heater lines.
Small gobies and the watchman goby with a pistol shrimp
Clown, neon, and Yasha gobies are often suggested for nano systems, though some do best once the tank is mature and feeding is reliable. The watchman goby and pistol shrimp are a well-known pairing. University of Florida IFAS extension describes the pistol shrimp as building and maintaining a burrow that the watchman goby guards, with each animal benefiting from the other. This pairing needs a sandy bottom, and rockwork should be stable so digging does not undermine the aquascape.

- Easy Setup & Gift Idea: User-friendly removable flip-top design makes it easy to change and clean. It is an ideal gift aquarium kit for both beginners and aquarium enthusiasts.
Tailspot blenny
Tailspot blennies are small and perch-oriented, which makes them a good fit for a tank with a few flat rock perches. Avoid housing several similar blennies together in a 20-gallon system, because they will contest the same territory.
Royal gramma
The royal gramma is colorful and cave-oriented. Provide enough rockwork for caves and avoid crowding it with timid fish, which may be bullied or pushed out of their hiding spots.

Cardinalfish
Slow, hovering cardinalfish fit better than active open-water swimmers. Keep the count low and check compatibility with each other fish before buying.
Wild-caught dragonets
Wild-caught mandarins and scooter dragonets can depend on live copepods and may starve in a small, immature system. The Saltwater Aquarium Blog guide suggests considering captive-bred specimens that eat prepared foods, but only in a mature, stable aquarium with close feeding monitoring. This is not a default recommendation for beginners.

Add fish gradually so the biofilter can keep pace with the increased waste. Bulk Reef Supply, in its beginner stocking guidance (publication date not stated on the page), advises adding no more than a few fish at a time and spacing additions by at least two weeks.
- Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and salinity before adding any fish.
- Add no more than a few fish in one group.
- Wait at least two weeks before the next group.
- After each addition, check the water again and watch for aggression, hiding, or refusal to eat.
- If water quality declines or fish show stress, pause further additions until the tank stabilizes.
Water testing and salinity
University of Florida IFAS recommends regular testing for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and pH, and it describes a hydrometer as essential for tracking salinity. A marine aquarium test kit and a salinity tester are the practical tools for these checks. Testing is the only reliable way to know whether a tank can handle its current livestock, because a fish that looks healthy can still be living in water that is slowly declining.

Quick Recap
Lid and feeding cautions
- Lid: Firefish and other jumpers need a tight-fitting lid, and any gaps around cords or equipment should be closed.
- Feeding: Confirm that each fish is eating before you add it. Wild-caught fish that take only live food are a poor fit for a small, young system.
- Burrowing: Gobies that dig need sand and stable rock so the structure stays in place.
- Solitary species: Some fish are solitary or need a partner animal. The watchman goby and pistol shrimp are a symbiotic example in UF/IFAS guidance.
