Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most freshwater aquariums, choose aquarium-safe sand with rounded, fairly uniform grains and a chemistry profile that suits your water. A water-neutral product is the sensible default if you do not want the substrate to affect pH or hardness. The right choice still depends on your fish, plants and water chemistry: color alone does not tell you whether a sand is suitable.
What makes a good freshwater aquarium sand?
- Rounded grains: Sharp or crushed grains are a poor choice, particularly for fish that sift or burrow in the substrate. sera recommends round grains and warns that uneven sizes can allow fine particles to settle between larger grains and interfere with circulation. sera’s sand guidance.
- Fairly consistent grain size: A uniform mix is easier to evaluate and is less likely to trap fine particles in gaps, according to sera.
- Suitable water chemistry: Check the product’s effect on pH and hardness rather than assuming all aquarium sand is inert.
- Appropriate for your setup: Consider whether your fish spend time on the bottom, whether plants need extra root nutrition, and how much rinsing the product requires.
For example, sera Aquarium Gravel White Fine is a rounded 0–2 mm mix described by its manufacturer as water-neutral. It is one product example, not an independently tested or ranked winner. sera Aquarium Gravel White Fine product information.
Compare the options by your aquarium’s needs
| Product | Grain or material | Water chemistry | Best fit and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| sera Aquarium Gravel White Fine | Rounded 0–2 mm mix | Described by sera as water-neutral | Bright, fine-grained option for freshwater or marine aquariums. Pre-washed, but sera recommends additional rinsing. Manufacturer information. |
| JBL Sansibar River | Coarser, rounded sand | JBL says it does not release hardness-producing substances or unwanted silicates | Freshwater option described as gentle on Corydoras and loach barbels. For lush plant growth, JBL suggests a nutrient layer beneath it. Follow JBL’s brief-rinse direction. JBL product information. |
| Seachem Flourite Black Sand | Porous clay substrate | Seachem says it is not chemically treated and will not alter pH | Dark substrate marketed for planted aquariums and usable in freshwater. It may be dusty and require rinsing; root tabs may be useful depending on the plant density you want. Seachem product information. |
| Seachem Onyx Sand | Naturally dark-gray, carbonate-rich sand | Seachem says it may raise pH by 0.1–0.5 units, depending on source-water characteristics | Consider it when some buffering is wanted, not when you need a chemically neutral substrate. Rinse if it is dusty from transit. The pH figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparative test. Seachem product information. |

Choose with bottom-dwelling fish in mind
Corydoras, loaches and other fish that forage along the bottom interact with the substrate directly. Favor aquarium-safe sand with rounded grains over sharp or crushed material. sera describes fine, rounded grains as gentle for bottom dwellers, while JBL describes Sansibar River as gentle on Corydoras and loach barbels. Those descriptions are useful selection guidance, not proof that a particular grain size prevents every injury or health problem.

Can you grow aquarium plants in sand?
Yes. sera says plants can root readily in sand, but sand alone may not provide the nutrition needed for vigorous growth. If you want a densely planted aquarium, JBL recommends putting a nutrient substrate beneath its sand, and Seachem says root tabs may help with Flourite Black Sand depending on the density you want. These are conditional options, not requirements for every planted tank.

How to prepare and add sand
- Check the product directions. Rinsing needs vary. sera recommends rinsing its pre-washed White Fine again; JBL calls for a brief rinse; Seachem notes that Flourite Black Sand can become dusty in transit and may need rinsing. Do not assume that all sand is ready to use straight from the bag.
- Plan the depth. sera says a 5–7 cm layer is used in most cases. JBL’s quantity formula assumes a 5 cm layer. Treat these as manufacturer planning guidelines, not universal requirements; adjust for your layout and plants.
- Add water gently. Pour onto a bowl or another diffuser instead of directly onto the substrate. JBL and Seachem recommend avoiding disturbance while filling.
- Clean the surface when needed. sera says waste tends to stay on top of sand and that occasional low-suction siphoning is sufficient when cleaning is needed. Sand still requires routine maintenance.
Which sand should you choose?
- For a neutral default: Choose a rounded aquarium sand described as water-neutral, such as sera White Fine, and follow its additional-rinsing direction.
- For bottom foragers: Prioritize rounded grains; compare the finer sera mix with JBL’s coarser rounded Sansibar River according to your preference and livestock.
- For plants: Decide whether your plants need a nutrient layer or root tabs based on the growth you are aiming for.
- If you want pH buffering: Onyx Sand is the option among these examples with a stated buffering effect; account for its possible pH increase and your source water before using it.
