For most carpets, start with a vacuum that picks up both carpet debris and pet hair. If fur remains embedded, loosen it with a rubber broom or a carpet rake, then vacuum again. Save a lint roller or reusable pet-hair remover for small patches after vacuuming. The best combination depends on your carpet’s care instructions and how well a vacuum performs on that surface.
Which tool should you use first?
Use a vacuum as the main tool for routine carpet cleaning. A pet-oriented label alone does not show that a machine will lift fur effectively from your particular carpet, so compare carpet pickup and pet-hair pickup separately. The American Kennel Club likewise recommends vacuuming first, then using a rubber broom on stubborn fur and vacuuming again: AKC’s guide to removing dog hair.
For routine cleaning: a vacuum suited to carpet and pet hair
Look for evidence that the vacuum handles your carpet type and lifts embedded hair, not just loose surface debris. Also consider whether hair wraps around the brush roll and how easy it is to inspect and clean. A full-size vacuum is the practical choice for covering rooms; manual tools require more effort and are better reserved for selected areas.
For stubborn fur: a rubber broom, followed by the vacuum
When fur remains caught in the pile after vacuuming, work a rubber broom over the affected area to loosen it, then vacuum up the lifted hair. This is a targeted second step rather than a replacement for routine vacuuming.

For small patches: a lint roller or reusable remover
After vacuuming, use a lint roller or reusable pet-hair remover for residual hair on a small area. These tools are suited to spot cleanup, not efficiently covering an entire carpet.

- Pet-hair pickup: Favor testing that assesses embedded fur, not only loose debris.
- Hair management: Check whether hair tangles around the brush roll, wheels, or bearings, and whether those areas are accessible for cleaning.
- Carpet compatibility: Confirm that the carpet maker permits the vacuum’s setting and brush action for your carpet.
- Coverage and effort: Use the vacuum for rooms and manual tools for selected stubborn spots.
Consumer Reports’ August 2021 upright and canister test protocol embeds five grams of Maine Coon cat hair into medium-pile nylon carpet, then assesses hair removal, the number of strokes required, and hair left tangled in the brush, wheels, and bearings. That figure describes the test setup, not typical household shedding or a universal ranking: Consumer Reports’ 2021 vacuum test protocol.
Hair pickup and general carpet cleaning can differ. For example, Consumer Reports’ model-specific review of the Eureka Ultimate Clean Pet AS3451A reports excellent pet-hair pickup on carpet but only mediocre removal of embedded sand and powder from soiled test carpets. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval program tests cleaning products and equipment, including vacuums and extraction systems. Independent testing can help inform a choice, but your carpet maker’s care guidance still determines which methods are appropriate for your particular floor covering.

Before using a vacuum head, broom, or rake that agitates the pile, consult the carpet manufacturer’s current care instructions. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s Carpet and Rug Care Guide advises inspecting the vacuum head for damage and using methods recommended by the carpet manufacturer to help maintain warranty coverage.

Using a carpet rake
A carpet rake is another possible way to lift embedded hair before vacuuming. The available guidance does not establish which rake designs are safe for every carpet construction. Check the carpet maker’s instructions, inspect the tool, and begin cautiously in an inconspicuous area. Stop if the tool pulls, fuzzes, or otherwise damages the pile.
Using a rubber broom
Use the broom only if its action is compatible with your carpet’s care guidance. Work on the stubborn area, then vacuum the fur it brings to the surface rather than leaving loosened hair in the pile.

A practical sequence for cleaning pet hair from carpet
- Check care instructions. Confirm that your vacuum setting and any manual tool are suitable for the carpet.
- Vacuum the area. Use a machine with evidence of carpet and pet-hair pickup; inspect its head for damage.
- Loosen remaining embedded fur. If hair is still caught in the pile, use a compatible rubber broom or cautiously tested carpet rake on that area.
- Vacuum again. Collect the fur lifted by the manual tool.
- Finish small residual spots. Use a lint roller or reusable pet-hair remover where needed.
There is no established universal winner across carpet pile heights, fiber types, and vacuum models. Choose based on tested performance on carpet and pet hair, manageable brush-roll maintenance, and compatibility with the carpet maker’s instructions.
