For a reef system up to about 75 gallons, the Aqua Ultraviolet Classic UV 15-Watt Series is a defensible fit—if you set its flow for the reef dose you want, rather than relying on wattage or a generic gallons-per-hour figure. The manufacturer lists 700 GPH at 30,000 µW/cm² or 466 GPH at 45,000 µW/cm², both at end of lamp life. For larger systems, the Aqua Ultraviolet Twist UV 25-Watt Series is rated for saltwater systems up to 150 gallons, with different reef flow recommendations.

Neither unit treats an entire aquarium indiscriminately: UV only affects organisms that pass through its chamber and receive sufficient exposure. The right choice depends on your system’s total water volume, intended use, actual flow, installation, and maintenance needs.

Which UV sterilizer is a good fit for a reef aquarium?

There is no single best UV sterilizer for every reef tank. Aqua Ultraviolet’s Classic UV 15-Watt Series is a reasonable named option for a system up to about 75 gallons, but that capacity rating is not a substitute for choosing the flow that delivers the intended UV dose. Its manufacturer identifies 30,000 or 45,000 µW/cm² at end of lamp life as ideal for reef environments. At those doses, the published flows are 700 GPH and 466 GPH, respectively. These are manufacturer ratings, not independently verified aquarium outcomes or proof that this model outperforms another. Treat the recommendation as a fit based on published specifications, not a performance guarantee.

How to choose a UV sterilizer for your system

Start with total system water volume

Base sizing on the water in the connected system, including the display tank, sump, and refugium, rather than the display tank alone. Then identify what you want the UV unit to do. A manufacturer sizing guide distinguishes applications such as algae or bacteria reduction from parasite management, and its flow recommendations vary accordingly. Aqua Ultraviolet UV sterilizer sizing guide

Match flow to the target dose

Water moves through a UV chamber; faster flow means less time under UV exposure. A unit’s wattage by itself does not tell you the dose delivered. Chamber design, the water path, flow, lamp output, and water clarity also affect exposure. Use the flow recommendation for the specific model and application rather than a universal watts-per-gallon rule.

For the Classic 15-watt, Aqua Ultraviolet lists 700 GPH at 30,000 µW/cm² or 466 GPH at 45,000 µW/cm², both on a 14-month end-of-lamp-life basis. The manufacturer states that those dose ranges are ideal for reef environments and cautions that higher kill rates can destroy planktonic food important to a reef. Check fit, plumbing, and service access

Confirm that your pump or filter can provide the required flow through the UV unit, and check the exact model’s plumbing and installation-space needs. Allow access to the lamp and quartz sleeve for maintenance. If you use a prefilter, follow the product instructions for placement and compatible flow.

The Classic 15-watt listing also gives a saltwater capacity of up to 75 gallons at 233 GPH for marine fish systems without reef or live rock, and identifies 75,000 or 90,000 µW/cm² for that use. Those figures describe a different application; they should not be mistaken for the manufacturer’s reef guidance.

What a UV sterilizer can—and cannot—do

UV acts only on organisms that pass through the chamber and receive enough exposure. It does not directly treat parasites attached to fish, pathogens inside fish, or organisms in the substrate. It is therefore not a whole-tank cure or a guarantee against reef disease. Aqua Ultraviolet UV sterilizer sizing guide

Installation and maintenance to plan for

  • Use the right pump or filter flow. Coralife’s Turbo-Twist 12x instructions recommend an appropriate pump or filter flow; its pump is sold separately.
  • Consider prefiltration. Coralife suggests prefiltration as part of its installation guidance.
  • Clean the quartz sleeve periodically. Build sleeve inspection and cleaning into maintenance, following the instructions for the specific unit.
  • Check saltwater-specific restrictions. Aqua Ultraviolet says not to use the Classic’s wiper in salt water because doing so voids the wiper-parts warranty.
  • Verify replacement-lamp compatibility. Coralife says its Turbo-Twist uses Coralife UV replacement lamps; check the exact model’s instructions before buying a replacement. Coralife Turbo-Twist product page · Coralife 2023 instructions

What to compare before buying

  • Total system volume, including connected sump and refugium water.
  • The intended application and the manufacturer’s flow recommendation for it.
  • Dose at the flow your pump can actually provide.
  • Plumbing, installation room, and access for lamp and sleeve service.
  • Replacement lamps and any saltwater-specific restrictions.

Compare complete model specifications rather than wattage alone. Product stock and retail prices can change, and manufacturer specifications do not establish independent comparative performance.
